Jaques-style Staunton pattern ebony and boxwood chess set with king side rook and castle, in a mahogany case, together with an old leather chessboard CONDITION REPORT General overall condition reasonably good. White pieces are good. Queen has slight damage to crown and one pawn has minor chip to base of column. Black pieces have damage - king has lost its cross, queen base is split - both knights have surface wear, both bishops have lost top balls, one castle has split to base, one pawn has split to base, three pawns have chips to collars. Pieces have weighted bases, height of king 4 inches. Box has surface wear and opposite corners of base have come apart. Base has card stuck inside. Top of hinged cover towards back is cracked. Underside baize is worn. There is no label. Board is badly worn and now in two pieces. Overall size open is 22 inches square
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Japan, Iron, octagonal, 12 mm cal. barrel, decorated with gold-inlaid ideograms at the base, the rest of the surface inlaid in silver with a dense weave of geometrical drawings, Tokugawa's Mon in the center, gilded on the remains of reddish coloring. Nozzle with moulded muzzle, silver-inlaid as well, but with spirals and provided with fore-sight. Sight on the barrel's back, shaped as parallelepiped with thin grooves at the peak and chessboard decoration. Pan on the right side, complete with spark arrester and revolving pan cover, both in silvered brass. Lock with flat, curved plate, provided with serpentine (in good working order), in brass as well with remains of silvering. Ring-nut decorated in the same way, that holds the arm at the height of the barrel's base. Wooden, full stock lacquered in brown (lacquer with small parts missing), Aoi-Mon (Malvarosa) of the Tokugawa is reproduced five times on the grip and alongside. Wooden, lacquered ramrod. Brass trigger's slide with remains of silvering. length 18,5 cm.
2nd-1st century BC. A mixed group of bronze items comprising of: a quatrefoil mount with rectangular attachment loop to the reverse; a fine openwork mount with high-relief geometric decoration to obverse, broken attachment loop to the reverse; a rectangular mount with 'chessboard' design and traces of red enamel, attachment loop to each end at the reverse. 43 grams total, 30-35mm (1 1/4"). The Chris Rudd collection, Norfolk, UK; formed since the 1970s; collection numbers CE19,17 and 21; from the estate of George Wentworth; found Grimston, Norfolk, Cumbria and Willerby, East Yorkshire, UK. Chris Rudd has collected ancient coins and antiquities since the 1940s. As an amateur archaeologist he found many himself at Badbury Rings, Dorset, 1952-53. He also dug at Hod Hill with Professor Sir Ian Richmond and at Wroxeter with Dame Kathleen Kenyon and Dr Graham Webster. Today he is best known as a Celtic coin dealer. His catalogues have been described as ‘an important research source’ by Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe and ‘treasure houses of delight’ by Dr Anne Ross. Coins and artefacts associated with Chris Rudd – as a collector, dealer and valuer – can be seen in The British Museum and other museums. This collection was formed since the 1970s.
