The company was established in 1795 by Thomas Jaques, a craftsman of Huguenot descent, and is still run by descendants today. Jaques of London is perhaps most famous for pioneering the Staunton Pattern chess set (please see the following lots for a note on this pattern), and, more unusually, for the use of their hollowed out wooden chess pieces as smuggling aids during the Second World War.The Jaques name is synonymous with ingenuity and quality craftsmanship, and the present lot is no exception. The patent for the In Statu Quo chessboard, which was made with bone or ivory chessmen, was submitted as early as 1853. The present lot however features an extra area for captured pieces, which was only added to the design after 1857. Furthermore, the signature Jaques & Son Patentees was only used from 1859 onwards, placing the present set slightly later in the 19th century. See for example Christie's South Kensington, Chess Sets, 21 September 1993, lot 8, for a similarly signed example with ivory chessmen. Ï’ indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. Please see our Terms & Conditions for more information.
