ROYAL NAVY INTEREST - A photograph album compiled by Dr Thomas Warden, circa 1860-70, comprising 68 leaves with approximately 290 mounted albumen photographs, including numerous portraits identified in the mounts. Many relate to people Dr Warden encountered as Staff Surgeon onboard HMS Psyche. The album begins with a personalised name inscription and date 1869, together with four portraits of Dr Thomas Warden from 1867-1870. Subsequent pages have pictures of fellow Royal Naval officers from HMS Exmouth (1860-61): Alfred (Thomas) Dering Nettleton, Lt. Jacky Balfour, Lt. Paddy Abbott and Lt. V.A Castle. Followed by other portraits, including other Royal Navy and Royal Marine seamen, such as Captain Sir Francis Blackwood (4th Baronet); two Commanders of HMS Psyche (Robert Sterne and Arthur Rodney Blane) and a full-length portrait of Major Terence Waverley Smythe, the captain of the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot; John Hales Montagu Calcraft, Second Master James Walsh, Surgeon Marmaduke Ward (Horatio Nelson's grandson) etc. Peppered throughout the portrait pages and filling subsequent pages are topographical photographs of Alameda; Miramar, Trieste, San Carlo Napoli; Genoa, 1866, Princess Street, Edinburgh; a shot of HMS Psyche at Civitavecchia in 1868, together with various artwork and paintings including the "Revenge", the "Bay of Biscay" and the "Bombay" on fire etc. Notes: Dr Thomas Warden (b. 30th Mar 1838 in Edinburgh, Scotland - d. 10th December 1875 in Hampshire, England). He was appointed to HMS Psyche in 1862 and the HMS Aurora in 1872.A newspaper article about Dr Warden's death in the Hampshire Telegraph and Naval Chronicle dated 15th December 1875 "SUDDEN DEATH OF STAFF-SURGEON IN THE ROYAL NAVY" describes the circumstances surrounding his death. After taking sick leave from his post on HMS Asia, he frequently suffered seizures on a worsening basis. Despite this, he much preferred to self-medicate rather than seek the assistance of fellow doctors. At the end of 1875, one of his housemates found his body at the foot of his bedstead. It is presumed that, after a few days of looking noticeably pale and unwell, he had a final seizure from which he, unfortunately, did not recover.Photographs pasted down, album spine defective, pages loose. Many pages are dog-eared at the edges and generally worn, with foxing and discolouration.
