Two Italian maiolica albarello, c.1730, by Francesco Antonio Saverio Grue, Castelli (1686-1747), one depicting St. Cecilia seated in a landscape alongside an inscribed pedestal, the other of St. Francis in the wilderness holding a skull, the tallest inscribed to the back 'Dr A Grue f', 22cm and 24cm highThese two albarello belong to a group of pharmacy jars depicting Saints produced by Grue c.1729-1731, with several examples on display at the Museo Nazionale della Ceramica Duca di Martina, Napoli. Most of these albarello were produced by Grue for use in the Pharmacy of Charterhouses (monasteries).
