Apothekengefäß mit der Hl. Apollonia Norditalien, Umbrien oder Venetien, 16./17. Jh. Bauchiger Albarello aus sandfarbenem bis rötlichem Ton, flächenfüllend in leuchtenden Farben bemalt: frontal runde, von Schuppenmuster gerahmte Kartusche mit Darstellung der Heiligen Apollonia, rückseitig Brustpanzer umgeben von Helm, Schild, Fahnen und Musikinstrumenten. Oberhalb des Standes und an Hals ornamentale Bordüren. An Stand und Hals restauriert. H. 35 cm Apollonia von Alexandria, lebte im 3. Jahrhundert in Alexandria in Ägypten. Sie starb wahrscheinlich um 249 als Jungfrau und Märtyrin.

In the 1960s she helped found the North Carolina School of the Arts, the USA’s first public conservatory, and in her mother's memory, created The Mary Duke Biddle Gallery for the Blind at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Here, it is noted that 'a group of albarelli whose style (like that of the charger in the preceding entry) is typical of ceramics from the Valencian town of Manises. From the late fourteenth century Manises became famous for its production of cobalt-blue and lustreware and, along with Paterna, it developed into one of the most important Valencian centres for the production of Hispano-Moresque pottery. The special attraction of Manises pottery was its workshops’ mastery over the challenging lustred glaze. The Manises lustre had an orange-gold hue, produced with a silver pigment and about a tenth part of copper, which demanded a specialised firing process at much lower temperatures than other glazes. The combination of pointed leaf, looped tendril, fern ornament and Bryony flower that decorate our vessel emerged from the earlier fioralixi designs thought to have entered Valencian potters’ repertoires by around 1430, and help date its production to the middle years of the century. A small Italian maiolica albarello dated 1560, possibly Montelupo, the waisted form painted with a yellow lion beneath a ribbon banner inscribed 'Gran'mace' within a berried leaf garland, dated 1560 in blue to the reverse, restoration, 10.5cm.

A Montelupo maiolica jar or albarello dated 1551, painted in green and blue with the profile portrait of a lady flanked by letters of the Greek alphabet beneath the date '1551', reserved within a foliate border on a dense ground of leaf scrolls, some chipping, a rim crack, 24.6cm.

An Italian maiolica albarello or pill jar c.1800, the small dumbbell form inscribed in manganese with 'Mas: Pil: Martial: Calib' within bands of colourful flowers and a small cartouche enclosing a cross and the initials 'AS', some chipping, 14cm. This jar was used to contain pills concocted from a number of ingredients, including iron oxide, which were used in the treatment of anaemia and dropsy.
