The DOWNS SCHOOL (Seaford, East Sussex) - Visitors Book (Nov. 1929 - Dec 1942), gilt-ruled & lettered cloth (with hand embroidered loose cover), oblong 4to.; some 41 leaves used & containing approx. 80 signatures / inscriptions. * founded (as a girls boarding school) in 1901, evacuated to Cornwall ('for the duration') in 1940, and closed 1964 (?). The visitors, many from the musical world, included Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Artur Schnabel, Myra Hess & Arthur Rubenstein. of especial interest is that of Lt. Col.Victor Haddick (undated, but 1929/30) who had led the Tractor Party ( a main responsibility being the developing of John Noel's film reels) in the ill- fated & controversial 1924 British Everest Expedition; comprising 8 lines of verse headed ' Lines to Mallory & Irvine (killed on Everest 1924) - Not theirs to tell the glory that they saw / The lightening swords, the crushing thunder bars / Nor tempest rage, nor summits shining peace / Under the stars . . . '; and surmounted by the blue Everest Label - apparently put on all mail carried by runners from the mountain, prior to being stamped at an Indian post office. Illustrated
