A RARE ARMENIAN YATAGHAN SWORD, GOLD INLAY, 19TH CENTURY. The blade is deeply recurved, with three narrow fullers along the spine, the entire surface inlaid in elaborate running vine motifs in gold. The bronze hilt with elongated triangular ears, embellished with wolves hunting amongst vegetation and a large baldheaded, mustachioed male figure with arms upraised. Mid-19th century. The earliest Armenian historian, Moses of Khoren (c. 410-490 c.e.?) records in his History of Armenia, an ancient Armenian god known as Kund (or Bald) Aramazd who presided over Navasand, the Armenian New Year. An 1856/58 pattern Enfield sword bayonet, with Manchester Regiment / Grenadier Guards interest. Chequered leather grips, with steel cross guard, quillon and muzzle ring. Recurved Yataghan blade with single fuller to both sides. Single edged, with false edge approximately 12cm from the tip. War Department stamped, with issue dates of 11/75 and ?/93. The steel backpiece is marked G.G which would indicate that it was originally issued to the Grenadier Guards. The pommel is further marked ‘V MAN.B.CO’ indicating that it was later issued to the Volunteer B Company of the Manchester Regiment (the Manchester Regiment was formed in 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms). Approximately 71.5cm length, blade length 58cm. Condition: good. Leather grips intact, with light service wear. Some darkening and mottling to the steel parts, and evidence of sharpening to the blade. Working spring clip for attaching to a rifle.

British 1856 Pattern Enfield Yataghan Sword Bayonet, these British and German made sword bayonets were made for the British Model 1853 Enfield Rifle and were carried by British volunteer units and also exported in quantities to both sides in the American Civil War. This is a typical export example as it is unmarked and with no military issue stamps to the blade. Some pitting to the pommel and some wear to the sheath.
