The "Eric Lester" Press Cuttings and Photograh album – leather bound with gilt title and name to the front boards – this incredible album which contains over 80 press photographs and numerous press cuttings covering Lester` s career during the 1950s period – what is more remarkable is that all his achievements were achieved while still working as club professional which to the surprise and shock of his club he handed his notice in at the age of 40 to concentrate on playing full time on the professional tour. Several times Lester was knocking on the door for Ryder Cup honours which always just evaded him but he had the privilege to play for the Great Britain team on several occasion against The Commonwealth, The Rest of Europe, and The Walker Cup team – he was also a member of team which won the Joy Cup in 1956. His biggest win came at The Penfold Swallow Tournament in 1956 the biggest prize played for at that time outside the Open with a first prize of £1000. He defeated Max Faulkner and Syd Scott in the final group out. In addition to his success he was also winner of The Tooting Bec Medal in the 1953 Open at Carnoustie (won by Ben Hogan) for the best round by a British Golfer which he also shared with Dai Rees. The album incl photographs covering Swallow Penfold Tournament, team photographs incl Golf Professional Team v Walker Cup, the team incl Dai Rees, Cotton, Scott, Daly, Allis, Panton, Lester, Bradshaw, O` Connor, Eric Brown - another of both teams from GB v The Commonwealth which incl Gary Player, Locke, Peter Thomson, Von Nida, Shankland, Bruce Crampton et al – The Joy Cup team 1956, GB v Rest of Europe together with individual shots incl Henry Cotton signed, Bobby Locke signed, Antonia Cerda Argentina, Max Faulkner, Harry Weetman, Peter Thomson, Christie O` Connor Snr, Syd Scott, Harry Bradshaw, R Henning (S.A), a wonder full photograph of Lester teeing off at The Penfold Swallow Tournament at The Royal Burgess Edinburgh seen driving and watched by huge crowd when over 5000 turned out to watch, and much more – all the images have been sellotaped but nevertheless this is an absorbing record of Eric Lester who came from a golfing family whose roots were in the midland – one of 4 golfing brothers and started at Sandwell Park as a caddie, served in the RAF during the war – the golfing traditions have carried on in the family with his sons and nephews carrying on in the profession
