Peake (Mervyn, 1911-68). Five original sketches and figure studies, consisting of three pencil sketches of a grotesque head, partly abstract figure, and a grotesque female tightrope walker (the latter entitled Allez Oop!), and two studies of a figure lying down, in red crayon, the first image drawn on the dedication leaf of a 1914 edition of Lord Jim, by Joseph Conrad, the other four drawings executed on the rear blank leaves and endpaper at the rear of the volume, orig. cloth, spine marked and dulled, joints frayed, 8. According to later pencil notes written in the volume by Georgina Horley, later Georgina Earnshaw-Smith, the drawings were made by Mervyn Peake in her London flat (Flat C, Highpoint, Highgate), either during or just after the Second World War. The final drawing is typically signed Squeak, one of Peake's recognised psuedonyms. (1)
