1st-3rd century AD. A silver cochlareum spoon with round-section balustered shank, swan-neck junction to shallow ovoid bowl, spike finial to handle. See Welch, C. Catalogue of the Collection of Antiquities in the Guildhall Museum, London, 1903, plate XXI. 21 grams, 14.5cm (5 3/4"). From a private collection; formed 1965-1975. Very fine condition.
1st-2nd century AD. A silver spoon with teardrop bowl, offset junction to the shank with balustered lower end, round-section shank, cloven-hoof finial with fur texture. See Johns, C.M. & Potter, T.W. A silver miniature spoon with with small deep bowl and wide rim punched with a series of dots; wide handle with series of three lines of punched dots; riveted loop to top with suspension ring with wire threaded round. From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. Fine condition.
16th century AD. A Scandinavian bone spoon with silver band for attaching the bowl to handle; bowl is wide with shallow dish; junction of tang with globular shape; body of handle fluted and ending in a turned vase shape with rounded end. 26 grams, 19.5cm (7 3/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Fine condition.
2nd millennium BC. A small silver spoon with shallow piriform bowl, round-section shank, ribbed collar with standing robed figure modelled in the round; the reverse of the bowl with incised detail of foliage and pellets, rear of the joint with stamped hollow triangle; the figure standing bearded in a floor-length robe with tremolier texturing, hands folded at the chest. A group of bronze medical instruments consisting of two scalpels; a spoon with holes in the dish and balustered handle; a spade-shaped instrument with fine teeth to the end and suspension ring to the other; a bodkin-shaped instrument; a fish tailed instrument with openwork end to handle. 67 grams total, 10-13.5cm (4 - 5 1/4").
