AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING KRIEGSMARINE SEXTANT, RECOVERED FROM U858, alloy frame signed and numbered on the arc C. Plath, Hamburg / 25282, index arm with micrometer adjustment, Kriegsmarine symbol and issue number ‘9823’, universal telescope, mirrors, seven shades, feet and hollowed Bakelite handle, contained in fitted case of issue with issue certificate dated ‘18 Juli 1944’, a U.S. Customs certificate dated 1949 granting ownership as a ‘Military Souvenir’, and some historical data, the box -- 12¾in. diameter, Ordered on 5 June 1941, laid down on 11 December 1942 and launched on 30 September 1943, U858 was sent by Germany towards the end of the war to cause havoc along the East Coast of America. In the event she saw no combat and held the distinction of becoming the first German warship to surrender to US forces on 14 May 1945. Initially used for publicity in War bond drives, latterly for torpedo practice, she was scuttled at the end of 1947.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Exploration, Polar Exploration, Sweden, the Centenary of S A Andrée’s Arctic Balloon Expedition, Large Silver Medal, 1997, signed AR ’97, the balloon with the three explorers at a table to left, and photographing the first polar bear shot to right, POLAR EXPEDITIONEN 1897, rev sextant, journals, watch and film, ANDREE STRINDNERG FRÆNKEL, edge stamped “GUSS” and “900”, 103mm. As made. The expedition was an attempt by Salomon August Andrée, Knut Hjalmar Ferdinand Frænkel and Nils Strindberg to to reach the North Pole by a hydrogen balloon, named Eagle. All were to perish for their bodies to be discovered by chance in 1930. Strindberg was the expedition’s photographer and the image of Andrée and Frænkel with the polar bear, as depicted on the medal, was recovered along with the bodies.

C A Colville RN', the fitted mahogany case with inset brass plaque similarly inscribed, with Kelvin Hughes examination certificate to the cover dated 9.10.1981 Provenance: The sextant belonged to Commander Charles Alexander, 3rd Viscount Colville of Culross, R.N, who served in World War I as Cdr Royal Navy at the Battle of Jutland 1916; served in World War II, being killed on active service in a flying accident in the Azores
