Lot 353

William Joseph Kentridge (South African 1955 - ) FOUR INSTRUMENTSsigned and numbered 37/40 in pencil in the marginetchingsheet size: 39 by 52,5cm; plate size: 21 by 27,5cm Perhaps one of the most common subjects in William Kentridge’s oeuvre is that of the procession. Often with undertones of besiegement and rebellion, the recurring images of figures marching in profile can be seen across several of the artist’s mediums, from film and installation, to many of his prints. The procession is made up of sequential images, acting as a sort of kinetic sketchbook, where Kentridge “thinks in images”. Figures are drafted into line, but are seen to morph into an assemblage of ordinary household objects. In Four Instruments (lot 353), an antlered nutcracker leads a man in a pin-striped suit, which is Kentridge’s representation of Soho Eckstein, followed by a sextant with a prosthetic leg and a skirted coffee pot. This imagery can be linked to the artist’s larger projects, such as Portage (2000), with striking panels making up his 14-foot-long leporello book, where similarly loose figures trample the pages of the project. Four Instruments can also be admired for its printmaking technique and layering of processes. The work is a drypoint print, with areas of both light and dark drypoint. The harsh, sharp lines in the background of the piece offer a complete juxtaposition to the darkness of the figures. There is a velvety richness in the ink in the heaviest areas, where the burr has been created by reworking the plate with the needle. In this way, line becomes object, and the lack of sharp outlines gives the work a feeling of movement and dynamic energy. McCrickard, K. (n.d.). William Kentridge: Drawing Has its Own Memory. Art in Print, 6(5).                                                                                                                        Amy Carrington
