Signed ('John Philip Sousa') to a clear area of the picture. Above his signature, Sousa has added an autograph musical quotation of four bars from his composition 'The Washington Post'. The composer has added the date, 1912, in his hand. To the verso, in Sousa's hand is written, 'John Philip Sousa, 'The March King', New York, Dec. 27. 1912'. Postally unused, but addressed in Sousa's hand to his correspondent. EX £150-200 The Washington Post is a march composed by Sousa in 1889.

Vintage signed postcard photograph of Breguet, the image showing him seated in the cockpit of his aircraft, alongside three members of his team. To the upper right corner also showing a small portrait of Breguet. The postcard was addressed to Antony and Andre Mars. Bearing a French postage stamp, postmarked Douai, 5th December. Signed by Breguet with his name alone to a clear area of the image, VG £200-300 Known for his development of reconnaissance aircraft used by the French during World War I, Breguet also remained an important manufacturer of aircraft during World War II.

The written text is in the hand of Chagall´s second wife Vava. Written and signed by Vava in bold black ink, and signed in bold blue ink by Marc Chagall below Vava´s signature. The postcard photograph shows to the front four different colour images of the village of Saint-Paul. Small overall, minor age wear and very small crease to the upper left corner, otherwise VG £200-300 Valentina Brodsky (1905-1993) Known as “Vava”. Second wife of Chagall 1952-85.

FRANCE ANATOLE: (1844-1924) French Poet & Novelist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature 1921. A.N.S., Anatole France, a good signature example, one page, oblong 8vo card, Paris, 16th April 1924, in French. Together with an A.L.S., Anatole France, to a postcard, En Rade de Dinard, 25th August 1900, to Victor Prouté, in French. France states in part `As Monsieur Dumollet did, I approached St. Malo without sinking and I send you my friendly regards..´. Also including a folding 4to printed dinner menu, given at Villa Said, to celebrate France´s 80th birthday, showing to the last page the facsimile signatures of all guests attending the dinner. France would pass away six months later. Also including an unsigned 7 x 9 photograph of Joseph Caillaux, the image showing him standing and attending Anatole France´s funeral. G to VG, 4 £80-100 Joseph Marie Auguste Caillaux (1863-1944) French Politician. Leader of the Radical party and Minister of finance. Accused of corruption, he was arrested and tried for high treason, sentenced to three years and forbidden to reside in French territory. He was allowed to return to Paris to attend France´s funeral, who had argued in Caillaux´s trial.

Geffroy states `I give your address to the Director of a literary publication who wishes to get my photograph. In this case, give the one you made at Quai de Béthune, the one I am standing behind my table.´ To the front the postcard shows a panoramic photograph of the French village Salins-Les-Bains, in the Jura. Together with an unsigned original 7 x 5 sepia photograph, thin paper, the image showing Geffroy seated in a full length pose. G, 2 £150-200

HUMPERDINCK ENGELBERT: (1854 - 1921) German Composer. An excellent, vintage colour picture postcard, depicting Hansel and Gretel at the confectionary house, the witch at the door. Signed ('EH') in black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the foot of the picture. To the left his signature, Humperdinck has added an autograph musical quotation of two bars from his composition 'Hansel and Gretel', together with a short inscription. An annotation in French is written to clear area that borders the image, in the hand of another. To the verso, the same hand has addressed the card to 'Mademoiselle L. Breval'. With an unfranked postage stamp. VG £200-300 Lucienne Breval (1869-1935) Swiss Opera Singer. Breval spent most of her career performing with the Opéra National de Paris where she became a greatly admired interpreter of French grand opera roles and Wagner heroines.

The Empress states `Dearest Masha, with heartfelt good wishes for a blessed & happy new year..´ further adding beneath his signature `Many thanks for charming book´. Matted in black, beneath a 5 x 7 photograph showing Tsar Nicholas II and the Empress Alexandra, in a full length pose, on their wedding day, to an overall of 8 x 12. Large traces of former affixing to the verso. About VG £400-600

Very rare A.L.S., `Brancusi´, one page, to the verso of a postcard, [Marseille], n.d., to Marinitza, in French. Brancusi writes to his correspondent, in poor French, stating in part `..since this morning I travel up to the Pyrenees in an electric train…I write this letter to you laying on the grass…close to the cows in front of the train station, waiting for the one which will take me to Pau.´ further concluding `This country is really poor..´ To the front, the postcard shows an image of the Marseille coasts. Folded, otherwise G £2000-3000
