DELÂGE LOUIS: (1874-1947) French Engineer. A Pioneer automobile Manufacturer. An attractive signed and inscribed postcard photograph `L. Delâge´, the image depicting the French engineer driving one of his Delâge Automobile cars. Signed and inscribed in bold black fountain pen ink `I am very sensible to your kind congratulations and I send you my very sincere gratefulness´ in French. Post-stamped to the verso, Paris, 4th July 1911. Extremely small, minor age wear and staining, otherwise VG £150-200The Delâge Automobile Company grew rapidly in the 1910´s and 20´s, and their vehicles soon gained a reputation for their stylish appearance and quality and as a dominant force in motor racing. With the great depression the company bankrupted and went into liquidation in the 1930´s. Delâge lived the rest of his life ruined in near poverty.

An excellent signed postcard photograph of Baker, the image depicting a very young artist standing in a full length pose, wearing an attractive feathers show costume. Signed in bold dark ink (`Josephine Baker´) to a clear area of the image, adding `Wien 1928´ in her hand. EX £400-500
KING B.B.: (1925-2015) American blues Singer, Guitarist and Songwriter. Worldwide known as “The King of the Blues”, King is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all times. Signed 4 x 6 postcard photograph, the image showing the blues singer in a half length pose, playing his guitar. Signed in bold blue ink with his name alone across the image. Written to the verso by a collector that the autograph was obtained in France at the Juan-Les-Pins Jazz Festival in July 2000. VG £100-120

The composer has neatly penned three bars of music, which he identifies and underlines as `Aragonaise du Cid´ from his opera Le Cid (1885). Leo asks his correspondent to forgive him for not fulfilling his word the day before and missing the the meeting and performance at the Opera-Comique, and states `I started working on the translated text of Coppée for the Hungarian album, and I did not realize the time it was…´ further referring to a competition for violin-solo; VINCENT D´INDY (1851-1931) A.L.S., V. D´Indy, one page, to a postcard, Brussels, 2nd December 1896, to Mr. E. Baudoux, in French. D´Indy explains that his work Mosaïque sur Fervaal for military band (1897) is taking all his time, and that he has no help to make copies, and states `Fervaal is progressing very well and much easier than I could expect, we start rehearsals from Monday on.´; Victor Massé (1822-1884) A.L.S., Victor Massé, one page, 8vo, Paris, 2nd July 1864, on the Imperial Theatre of the Opera, to Mr. Thomas, in French. Massé asks his correspondent to accept an audition for Madame Cavailles, stating `..an interesting artist, member of the Opera choir, student at the Conservatory, who wishes a little audition, make me the pleasure of accepting…you know her, she is your protégée and for this reason she was accepted to the singing lessons..´. With blank integral leaf; Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) A.L.S., Nadia Boulanger, two pages, oblong 8vo, mourning paper, Paris, n.d., to Henri Béraud, in French. On the occasion of a honorific performance given for the disappeared, Boulanger states `I obviously only request from you that you explain that these works, so great and so scarcely performed, are this time performed to help to all these distressed people. A.L.S., G Bove, one page, to a postcard, n.p., 6th October 1884, to Giovanni Roncagli, in Italian. Bove states in part `Forgive me for answering on a postcard, although I reserve my right to send you a lengthy letter any day from now on. I received your kind letter from Porto Santo Stefano, and I can assure you that it brought to my mind wonder and pleasure. I receive occasionally from Fornari news about you, and you can believe me when I say that I was very displeased with the Naval Academy incident..´ Also addressed in his hand to the verso. CONDE CARMEN: (1907-1996) Spanish Poet and Writer. Founder of the first popular University and the first woman to become number academic of the Royal Academy of Spain. Small collection of two A.Ls.S., and two T.Ls.S., Carmen, in blue pencil, one or two pages each, 8vo, Madrid 1955-57, all to Juana Granados, in Spanish. The first being a T.L.S., 14th April 1955, on the printed stationery of the Madrid University, and Conde states `I have been in Alicante and in the Spanish Morocco, and that is why I could not contact you. For the Miguel Hernandez book you have to contact…he is the Librarian at the Miro library in Alicante, his biographer and my friend..the book will be a success…I send to you a clipped piece from the ABC journal referring to Jorge Guillen´ (Clipped piece enclosed). The second being a postcard, 1st October 1956, and Conde pushes her correspondent saying `You must call and talk to the Consul, and to the General Director for Cultural Affairs, and to the Foreign Affairs Minister. Do it.-´ further saying `Tell me my friend. I am very sad and sorry for the illness..I´ll find you the book. And will write to you again´. The third, an AL.S., on a two pages card, dated 2nd April 1957. Conde refers to an article she has read about a lecture given by the Spanish Poet Dictinio on Juan Ramon Jimenez, with her correspondent´s presence alongside and wishes to get her feed back. On the fourth letter, an A.L.S., 10th August 1957, on the printed stationery of the Conference Archive of Ruben Dario, Conde reports about her prompt trip to Santander where she will meet her correspondent and asks her a favour as her daughter has lost her glasses and is very sad, and states `Everything from Italy pleases me, poor me ! I would live eternally in your country… Please send the work `Carmen Conde, Poetry´ to the noble German writer Gertrude de Fort, she has written a very good book…´. The four letters are accompanied by the original envelopes. G to generally VG, 4 + 2 £80-100Juana Granados de Bagnasco - Italian-Spanish Writer & Translator and close friend to Carmen Conde, with whom she worked on poem works. Miguel Hernandez (1910-1942) Spanish Poet. An iconic figure in the Spanish literature of the first half of 20th century. Condemned to death after the Spanish Civil War, he got it commuted to 30 years imprisonment. He would die two years after in prison of tuberculosis. Jorge Guillen (1893-1984) Spanish Poet, a member of the generation of 27. Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881-1958) Spanish Poet, Nobel Prize in literature in 1956. Gertrude von Le Fort (1876-1971) German Writer of novels and poems.
STEIN GERTRUDE: (1874-1946) American Novelist, Poet and art Collector. Stein moved to Paris in 1903 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She hosted a Paris salon, where the leading figures of modernism in literature and art, such as Picasso, Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and Matisse would meet. A.L.S., with her initials, to the verso of a postcard, 1939, to Belle Young, Hollywood. Stein in her usual difficult to decipher hand sends her best wishing to her correspondent and explains how occupied she is. Overall age wear and water stains. F £100-150
WILDER THORNTON: (1897-1975) American Novelist and Playwright. Three times awarded with the Pulitzer prize. A.L.S., Thornton Wilder, to the verso of a postcard, Hamden, 25th May 1960, to Manfred Rongen. On a postcard showing to the front a Chinese hunting scene, Wilder thanks his correspondent and states `Many thanks for your kind greetings on my birthday. Let me wish you in return success in your studies and further progress.´ Post-stamped in New haven. VG £150-200
PRUDHOMME SULLY: (1839-1907) French Poet, the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, 1901. Autograph statement signed `Sully Prudhomme´, on a 5.5 x 3.5 postcard, Chatenay sur Seine, 19th November 1901, in French. Prudhomme states `I do not know how to improvise and I do not have spare-time. What to do?´ and signs to the white lower border front card beneath a painting by Hans Zatska, Austrian painter (1859-1945). Addressed in another hand to the verso and post-stamped. VG £80-100
MISTRAL FREDERIC: (1830-1914) French Writer. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1904. A.L.S., F. Mistral, to the verso of a postcard photograph, Maiano, 17th February 1914, to Leon Branchet, in Occitan. The front photograph shows the French writer in a half length profile pose, wearing his customary hat. Mistral sends his congratulations to his correspondent for his work and states `My compliments for your collection Les Chansons gallardes, where popular musical themes can be retrieved…and you honour the reign of our beautiful Queen Marguerite..´ Small overall, minor age wear. VALENTINO RUDOLPH: (1895-1926) Italian Actor, who starred well-known silent films in the 1920´s. An early sex-symbol icon. Valentino died at the very early age of 31. Three vintage unsigned postcard photographs, the J. Beagles & Co. images of London depicting Valentino in three different poses. One of them showing Valentino standing in a three quarter length pose, in his role as Sheik in the famous silent film with same name. Valentino´s death caused mass hysteria, including fans suicides. With ornate embossed white borders. EX £80-100
GORKY MAXIM: (1868-1936) Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, Russian Writer and political socialist Activist & CHALIAPIN FEODOR (1873-1938) Russian Opera Singer. An excellent vintage signed postcard photograph by Gorky and Chaliapin, the image showing both artists in a half length pose, Gorky seated alongside Chaliapin standing close. Individually signed by Gorky and Chaliapin, in bold black fountain pen ink, to clear areas of the image. Two very small ink stains to the first letter of Gorky´s autograph, otherwise VG £300-400Gorky wrote Chaliapin's autobiography in 1916. He would write to Chaliapin in 1909 `I myself will write your life as you dictate it… I hasten, my friend, to tell you the following: You're undertaking a serious business, an important and widely significant matter, that is, something interesting not only to us Russians but to the whole world of culture and especially of art! Do you understand this?... A symbolic life, which attests indisputably to the great strength and power of our land… Watch out, Feodor, don't toss your soul into the hands of word peddlers!… I am terribly afraid you won't understand the national, the Russian significance of your autobiography! Listen, my dear, shut your eyes and think a minute…´.
NABOKOV VLADIMIR: (1899-1977) Also known as Vladimir Sirin. Russian-American Novelist. Well known for his most noted novel Lolita (1955). Rare A.L.S., `V. Nabokoff´, twice, to the front and verso, one page, to the reverse of a German postcard, Berlin, 24th December 1935, to D. Roche, in French. Nabokov thanks his correspondent for his letter and states in part `.. I like white Christmas because they make any city look like St. Petersburg. As soon as Despair (in Cyrillic) will be published you will of course get a copy. My editor promised it would be ready for Christmas, but you the price of editors´ promises..´ Addressed to the front in Nabokov´s hand, adding his name as sender. VG £1000-1500Denis Roche, French translator of Nabokov´s works. Despair (1936) Otchayanie. Originally published serially in Russian during 1934, it was further published as a book in 1936, and translated to English by the author in 1937. Most copies of the 1937 English edition were destroyed by German bombs during World War II, only a few copies remain.

Signed postcard photograph `Alfonso R´, by the King of Spain, the image depicting Alfonso XIII shaking the hand of a competitor during an equestrian competition in Spain. Signed in bold black ink to the upper white border, also dated 1913 in the King´s hand. One small tear to the upper edge, not affecting the signature, and small overall staining, otherwise G £100-150
