A Victorian bronze commemorative plaque for Herbert Marsden Lanyon, Midshipman RN:, ' ... who refusing to leave his admiral, perished by his side in the foundering of HMS Victoria off Tripoli June 22 1893', fully inscribed, '...erected by the Church of Ireland Young Men's Society, Belfast, to keep in recollection of a boy's devotion to duty and his heroic death. Young men forget not his example', with verse and dedication, within a black border with laurel spandrels, 69 x 92cm. *Note- The sinking of HMS Victoria is perhaps one of the most well known accidents of the Royal Navy in the 19th century when she was struck by HMS Camperdown during fleet practice manoeuvres under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir George Tyron. Seventeen year old middy Lanyon was aboard the Victoria with Admiral Tyron and refused to leave his post by his admiral, both drowning when the Victoria capsized in under 13 minutes.
