A set of two carver arm and six single late 19th century oak dining chairs, each with carved top rail, splat and turned stiles, with red leatherette upholstered seat and raised on turned front legs, one bearing plaque "Hewitson, Milner & Thexton, House Furnishers, Tottenham Court Road" (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: These chairs are in generally good condition and could be used in their current state without the need for any repairs or restoration. One single chair has an old break across the bottom edge of the top splat this has however been repaired and is structurally solid and there are no significant timber losses. All remaining chairs are in good condition. All chairs are very slightly loose at the rear joints but as stated are perfectly serviceable. The red leatherette upholstery is generally in good order if a little dated. All chairs have some rubbing to the original top polish which should be clearly evident from the photograph.
* A Persian six tile plaque, in 17th/18th century style, depicting five figures standing and seated by a blossoming tree, near rockwork, with crane to sky and within a palmette and leaf scroll border. Overall 63 cm x 42 cm, each tile 21 cm square (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We really do not know the age of these tiles. They are however from the estate of the Late Miss Mary Burkett of Isel Hall, Nr Cockermouth, Cumbria who was the former director of Abbot Hall Art Gallery between 1967 & 1987. Mary was a great traveller and the sale has a number of lots which are in the category of antiquities. We did not carry out the probate valuation of the contents however the firm that did was not sure whether these were 17th, 18th century or later. The condition of the tiles is generally good. There are no serious cracks or losses. They all have minor edge nibbles and small losses to the glaze but no significant or major problems. Our image should show the extent of the chips and small losses. The colours are clearly a little faded. The tiles are housed in a rectangular white painted frame and two of the tiles are very loose. They would need refixing if this was to be wall hung.
* English School (16th century), oil on panel, "Portrait of Sir John Puckering", half length, wearing robes as Keeper of The Great Seal, with armorial to top left. 89 cm x 73 cm, in ebonised frame with gilt slip and title plaque (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We do not know the name of the artist who painted the picture. But as stated the painting is 16th century and therefore we believe that the painting will have been painted at the time when Sir John Puckering was keeper of The Great Seal which I believe he was for four years between 1592-1596. As he died in 1596 it is likely that the painting dates from around this time. The painting has come to us from the Estate of Miss Mary Burkett OBE formerly of Isel Hall, Cocker mouth, Cumbria. The condition of the painting is generally good and it could be hung in its present condition without the need for any remedial work. The painting has had some restoration work which is visible under a UV lamp. The restoration work is not extensive and the main areas that have been restored are as follows:- On the face there is a small dent right at the centre of the right eye. There is also evidence of an old scratch running across the mouth area of the sitter, the indentation is just visible with the naked eye and more visible under the UV light. There are small areas of restoration below the hairline on the forehead these being 3 small patches. Also visible under a UV light is a scratch across the bridge of the nose and various small flecks and poke mark type flecks on the cheeks. There are also small areas that have been touched in all around the edge of the portrait next to the frame. The portrait is on three panels and the joins of each panel are clearly visible. The left hand panel is slightly recessed from the middle panel and there is a clear ridge here. In my opinion the painting could be hung and enjoyed in its present condition without the need for any restoration work, however the frame is a little plain and uninteresting and you may wish to replace this.
