Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Fox Squirrel and Live Oak" Signed lower center. Original Watercolor on Paper laid on Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This art was originally published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States. Scrambling, twisting and finally falling on all fours, the Fox Squirrel cavorts in the massive branches of Georgia's strong state tree, the Live Oak. As the largest North American squirrel, this black ball of fur is clumsy. However, as if to atone for his awkwardness, the Fox Squirrel is friendly and much more charming than his graceful relatives. These friendly fellows entertain people by playing with pine cones and paper balls, turning somersaults in grassy meadows, holding climbing drills on tree branches and chasing each other through Georgia's magnificent oak groves. These humorous activities are accompanied by loud scoldings, noisy whistling and the rapid chatter through which Fox Squirrels communicate with each other. Like their smaller relatives, the Georgia squirrels instinctively twitch their bushy tails. Noting this nervous habit as a characteristic of the squirrel species, the Greeks named these friendly rodents squirrel, which means shadow tail. During the midwinter mating season the twitching tail is especially evident as the males busily preen and fluff. When finished, they curl their bushy, well-groomed tails over their smooth backs and begin to court the female Fox Squirrels. About forty-five days later, two to four young are born, each weighing only two-thirds of an ounce. In just ten weeks, the once tiny babies crack their own nuts, scold their friends and, like their parents, sleep away much of the lazy morning until the afternoon sun warms their sleek, black coats.Image Size: 12 x 13.75 in. Condition Report Crazing evident throughout, tea pot has interior crazing, a chip and a crack to the base.

Trials.- Gurney (Joseph) The Trial (at large) of James Hill...for Feloniously, Wilfully, and Maliciously, setting Fire to the Rope-House in His Majesty's Dock-Yard at Portsmouth... , with manuscript erratum on p.36, old newspaper cuttings at end, contemporary half green roan, G.Kearsly...& Martha Gurney, 1777 § Trial of Elizabeth Duchess Dowager of Kingston for Bigamy (The)..., initial licence leaf, library cloth-backed boards, Charles Bathurst, 1776 § Tryal and Condemnation of Arundel Coke alias Cooke Esq; and of John Woodburne Labourer, for Felony, in Slitting the Nose of Edward Crispe Gent., initial licence leaf, with 2 further leaves concerning the case bound at end, browned, library cloth, John Darby...& Daniel Midwinter, 1722, first editions, all ex-library copies with label to pastedowns, the second with perforated stamp to title, rubbed; and 3 others, folio (6)⁂ The second item was a celebrated society trial. The self-styled Duchess of Kingston was a coarse and flighty woman who lived a life of scandal, dissipation and social decadence. She was married secretly in 1744 to the Hon. Augustus John Hervey, but they were soon separated and had no further contact. Twenty years later she married the Duke of Kingston while still married to Hervey. The Duke died after only a few months leaving his wife the whole of the estate on the condition that she remained a widow. Hervey, meanwhile, wished to remarry, and was anxious to prove his first marriage in order to file for divorce. She was tried by her peers for bigamy and found guilty; she fled to the continent and resumed her scandalous lifestyle in Paris, Rome and St. Petersburg, where she set up a brandy distillery.The third concerns a horrendous case of murder in Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk) on New Year's Day 1721. The two prisoners were convicted and duly hanged.

SEISHINKEN MOTOSHIGEA Set of Kozuka (Knife Handle), Kogai (Skewer), Kashira (Pommel), Kojiri (End Cap), Uragawara (Slot Reinforcement), and Semegane (Scabbard Ring) Edo period (1615-1868), mid-19th centuryOf shibuichi, some surfaces ishimeji, each piece inlaid and chiselled in relief of gold and shakudo depicting tigers and bamboo, kikusui (chrysanthemums floating on a stream), or bamboo, the kozuka signed on the reverse Ikeda Mitsumasa no motome ni ojite Jukizan Ushiki no fumoto Sakurai no sato ni oite kizamu toki ni Ansei kinoto-u seito [...] Seishinken Toi (Made to the order of Ikeda Mitsumasa at the foot of Ushiki by Mount Juki in Sakurai village in midwinter 1856), with a seal Toi, the kogai with the same inscription in shorter form concluding with a signature Seishinken Minamoto no Motoshige and with a gold-inlaid kao, the other components variously signed Toi and Seishinken; with a fitted wood storage box.
