The watch belonged to a George Partridge of 4 Commando, 1st Special Service Brigade who took part in the D-Day Landings. WW2 R.A.F./R.A.A.F. Jaeger LeCoultre, bomb aimers and navigators watch. Jaeger LeCoultre manufacture. The case back outer is stamped with the British military broad arrow mark, together with the letters “G.S.T.P 280306 XX”. Working order, with leather uniform strap. Scarce.For applications where absolute accuracy and total reliability were paramount, a relatively small number of high-grade watches were ordered from several of Switzerland’s finest makers, the most celebrated of these being IWC and Jaeger LeCoultre. The G.S.T.P initials represent the words “General Service Trade Pattern”The British government was equipping the armed forces with wristwatches as standard. RAF navigators generally found it more convenient to use pocket watches, as these could be placed flat on the charts from which they were working and indeed, the very size of the watch itself meant that it could be more easily consulted in a dimly lit bomber fuselage than its wrist worn equivalent. When used in this context, this must actually be one of the few applications in which the pocket watch was perceived as being superior to the wristwatch and its use as a navigator’s instrument continued long after the wristwatch had generally taken over as the choice of other bomber crew personnel.

Atmos I, perpetual clock, J.L. Reutter for Compagnie GŽnŽrale de Radio, France, 1930's--23,6 x 17,5 x 14,3 cmÊ In 1928 Jean-LŽon Reutter, engineer at Neuchatel, developed the first Atmos pendulum, renamed Atmos 0. This project was based on a clock with few building elements, which was charged through a glass container filled with mercury. Due to the temperature changes, it rotated the cylinder to which was connected and loaded the spring, which would then provide the necessary force for the watch to function.Ê In 1929, the French Compagnie GŽnŽrale de Radio put Reutter in charge of a department dedicated to the design, development and production of the Atmos 1.Ê This model differed from the previous one for greater attention to details and the addition of ammonia to the thermo-sensitive mix that allowed the watch to be charged. The Atmos 1 is probably the rarest model, as there are fewer than 2000 products. It was also the only one to be produced in France.In 1935 Jaeger-LeCoultre, who had been producing movements for Atmos 1 for a few years, acquired the rights and moved production to Switzerland. After an initial phase, in which Jaeger-LeCoultre patents a new charging system, the production of the Atmos 2 begins. The pendulum remains unchanged stylistically and operatingly, except for some design changes.Ê The genius of the project, its unique lines, as well as the ability to immediately strike the observer, made the Atmos a legendary pendulum. As a witness to its success, we see that Jaeger-LeCoultre's Atmos is owned by various figures from the world of politics and entertainment, even becoming one of the official gifts of the Swiss Confederation. A mid 20th Century Jaeger Lecoultre folding travel clock with black lacquered mounts, the dial set with Roman numerals and date marker, No'd. "1190442" to back CONDITION REPORTS Unknown if in working order. Has wear to the enamel edges and some pitting and surface scratches throughout. In need of a good clean.
