Lot 451

Fine cased pair of Westley Richards side by side 12 bore shotguns, serial numbers 14878 and 14879, numbered in gilt 1 and 2, 30 inch nitro proved barrels with doll head extension engraved Westley Richards 170 New Bond Street London, Whitworth Fluid Compressed Steel, choked to improved cylinder on gun 1 both barrels of each gun, Westley Richards patent actions with Anson and Deeley's patent ejector, scroll back treble grip actions finely engraved with scrollwork, each trigger guard engraved with a gundog, figured chequered stocks with vacant escutcheons and horn capped forends, length of pull from the front trigger 14.5inches, gun weight 1: 2883 grams, 2: 2906 grams. With original makers oak and leather case with brass corners, label and maroon baize interior, the exterior with owners name E.G. Sergeant.UK SHOTGUN LICENCE OR RFD REQUIRED TO BUY THIS LOT.The case measures 84cm wide Condition report: Both guns have been professionally restored and cleaned up at some stage and are now very presentable with a good finish and blue. There are occasional minor marks to both the bluing and the stocks but nothing at all deep or defacing. Both guns have chips and small amounts of wear to the corners of the wood on the forends where side by side shotguns often get damaged. Both actions cock and eject correctly on snap caps.Gun 1: This has been shot the most and a perceivable rattle is present between barrels and action with the forend removed but not so when the forend is fitted. Bores both measure .740 matching the relatively recent .740 reproof. Barrels ring when tapped with a very slight buzz, there is a small sliding sound when the barrels are tilted up and down as if there is a particle within the ribs. Bores are both free of pitting. There is evidence of a lifted dent to the left tube around the mid point.Gun 2: Perceivable rattle is present between barrels and action with the forend removed but not so when the forend is fitted. This is not as noticeable as Gun 1. Bores have light scratching lines, inside. They ring when tapped and measure .740 and .741 against the .740 reproof. No signs of dents. The forend has either a very slight crack or a deep scratch near the action. If it is a crack it appears stable, our opinion is it is more likely to be a scratch.

The metalwork has some light overall pitting and corrosion spots. There is a hole in the trigger guard presumably for a sling loop which is now missing. The stock has had some splits repaired forward of the lock plate. These repairs have come unstuck and require attention. The woodwork around the lock plate has some losses, there is a chip to the wood where it meets the barrel on the reverse side of the lock and there is a chip to the toe of the butt. The forend has a horn endcap which I do not think is original. The forend of the gun has a different patina to the butt stock probably as a result of the previous repair. There is a short hairline crack which seems stable to the trigger guard emanating from the trigger guard retaining screw hole.
