Der junge Konstantin streckt den Löwen nieder , Flämische TapisserieWirkerei in Wolle und Seide in eingeschränkter Polychromie, mit Leinen hinterfüttert. Äußerst seltene Darstellung des in einer Arena vor höfischem Publikum kämpfenden jungen Mannes in römischer Rüstung, mit seinem Schwert den Löwen im Sprung erlegend. Vegetabile Bordüre mit vier Rundreserven um Landschaften, in den Ecken Kartuschenmotive. Detailreiche Darstellung in sehr gut erhaltener originaler Farbigkeit. Ältere Restaurierungen, vor allem im Bereich der Bordüre und der Ecken. H 307, B 314 cm.Letztes Viertel 16. Jh.Die berühmteste Konstantin-Folge basiert auf zwölf Kartons von Peter Paul Rubens, die dieser in Paris 1622 bemalte. Die Tapisserien entstanden 1625, in den Ateliers von Marc Comans and François de la Planche im Faubourg Saint-Marcel. Die Serie wurde erweitert um fünf Kartons von Pietro da Cortona und von 1630 bis 1640 in den Ateliers des Kardinals Francesco Barberini in Rom gewoben. Unter den Ikonographien, die Cortona abbildete, befindet sich auch diese Szene des jugendlichen Konstantin, der sein Schwert durch den Hals des Löwen führt. Die um 1637 realisierte Tapisserie gehört heute zum Sammlungsbestand des Philadelphia Museum of Art (acc.no. 1959-78-11). Heinrich Goebel erwähnt zwei weitere Konstantin-Folgen: Eine aus acht Bildern vom Brüsseler Tapissier Wilhelm Tons, die 1607 an das Erzherzogspaar Albrecht und Isabella ausgeliefert wurde, und eine größere, die um 1655 in der Manufaktur Geraert van der Strecken hergestellt wurde (Goebel, 1. Teil, Bd. II, Leipzig 1923). Die hier vorliegende flämische Tapisserie ist vermutlich mehr als 50 Jahre früher zu datieren, sicher noch im 16. Jahrhundert. Die Vorlage, auf die sie zurückzuführen ist, kennen wir nicht.Die Darstellungen aus der Geschichte des römischen Kaisers Konstantin zielten auf ein christliches Publikum, dem durchaus bewusst war, dass Flavius Valerius Constantinus, später bekannt als Konstantin der Große, der erste Christ auf dem römischen Thron war und mit der Mailänder Vereinbarung von 313 das Christentum als Staatsreligion legitimierte.
