Lot 1030

A fully beaded-ivory-cocktail-length-dress worn by Jamie Lee Curtis at the 55th Academy Awards ceremony (ABC, 1983).Hollywood glamour defines this garment, composed of an ivory chiffon, fully embellished with pearlized-glass-bugle-beads, which catch and glisten in the light. The dress is cut on the bias; the dolman sleeves create a loose bodice (34" inch bust); the waistline (24.5" inches) is gathered and cinched; and the skirt is open and hits below the knee. The garment construction features center seams at the front and back of the bodice. The beading is sewn on the diagonal, creating a subtle chevron pattern on the bodice. Two darts extend from the waist to the bust, which creates a defined V-shape, creating a diamond shape that extends the length of the bodice. The fabric looks like it was cut with a pattern then beaded and assembled. Only the skirt is handsewn and lined with blush-colored acetate at the internal waistline. A Petersham is tacked at the waistband to help shape the garment due to the weight of the embellishment. There is no label or size marker present. The dress was worn by Jamie Lee Curtis to the 55th Academy Awards. She presented the Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing alongside Carl Weathers. Weathers, who presented with Curtis, commented on how lovely her dress was before presenting the award. Marlene Dietrich originally owned the gown and wore a similar version in the 1942 film The Lady Is Willing (Columbia Pictures, 1942), Dietrich's gowns were designed by Irene Lantz, whose clothing line was featured in premier retailers and department stores. PROVENANCE Lot 8 "Unforgettable: Fashion of the Oscars," Christie's Auction House (Sale #9074) March 19, 1999.

Lot 1477

9th-10th century A.D. or earlier. Formed as a gold cap set with polished glass gem; suspension loop above. 0.85 grams, 17 mm (3/4 in.). Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection. This amulet was believed to offer protection against 'Elfshot'. The attack of elves was believed responsible for mysterious suffering in men and livestock. 'Elfshot' described sudden shooting pains localised to a particular area of the body, such as in rheumatism, arthritis or muscle stitches or cramps. Elves were thought to shoot darts or arrows where such pains had no obvious external cause. Belief in elfshot persisted into the 20th century in rural areas, and as proof country folk would sometimes find small arrowheads (the remains of Neolithic or Mesolithic flints, or naturally-occurring spear-shaped stones) that were believed to be the magical weapons that caused the afflictions. Belief in elfshot began in the Pagan Germanic period.

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Fishing Flies - Lefty's Deceiver" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally featured on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Lefty's Deceiver issued May 31, 1991. The tide is in, and in one of the thousands of shallow lagoons in the Bahama out-islands, furtive Bonefish have begun to feed. Their tails are visible above the surface of the shallow water as they nose along picking morsels from the bottom. Suddenly, a flash of bright color attracts the attention of a hefty Bonefish as a small "fish" darts by. Lunging instinctively, the Bonefish finds itself fast to a flyfisher's Deceiver ... and bores away in the typical long run that makes this fish an angler's delight and challenge. Each year, thousands of Bonefish and other saltwater species fall prey to Lefty's Deceiver -- one of the most popular saltwater lures of all time. Developed by "Lefty" Kreh, legendary outdoors editor of the Baltimore Sun and saltwater angling expert, the Deceiver is deceptively simple in design. Comprised of white cock's hackle feathers, white and red hair from a calf's or buck's tail, and several strands of reflective mylar tinsel, it has the general shape of a baitfish. When pulled through the water, it "swims" enticingly with a fish-like motion. Its streamlined shape is also easy for flyfishers to cast. "Lefty" Kreh and a few others are largely responsible for the explosion of interest in saltwater flyfishing. Undoubtedly, his Deceiver and other innovations in design have helped, by giving flyfishers superbly effective flies with which to pursue the powerful and exciting saltwater species. Image Size: 18.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 21 x 19 in. Unframed. (B13015)
