Latona Dahlia - A Clarice Cliff trinket box and cover circa 1931 of rectangular section hand decorated with large stylised blooms over black ground within a blue and black line border over white glazed ground, hand painted "Latona" and Bizarre mark, width 14cm. Condition - No chips, cracks or restoration. [Carefully painted so the leaves and flowers flow over the lid and sides, this piece is possibly a sample. The shape pre-dates the Latona pattern which was created in 1929 and also issued during 1930, with ‘matchings’ made for South Africa as late as 1932. LG]
Delecia Citrus - A Clarice Cliff shape 362 vase circa 1932 hand decorated with stylised fruit and foliage over a running Delecia ground, printed "Delecia" and Bizarre mark, height 20cm. Condition - No chips, cracks or restoration, few minor paint scuffs. [Delecia was originally created during 1929; it featured random colour runnings created by mixing paint with turpentine which had to flow in distinct colours down the shape - a tricky job for paintresses such as Elsie Griffin who worked on this pattern! Fruit and floral patterns further enhanced this idea, as shown on this 362 Delecia Citrus vase. This shape was sometimes converted at the factory into a lamp base by having a hole drilled into the side for the cable and the shade fitment was supported by a cork fitment in the vase neck. LG]
Crepe de Chine (Green) - A Clarice Cliff conical six place coffee set circa 1932 transfer printed with stylised blooms and foliage picked out in tonal green and yellow over a pale celadon ground with green cafe au lait decorated handles, printed "Crepe de Chine" with bizarre mark. Condition - Three small chips to the inside rim of the coffee pot, no cracks or restoration, some minor light crazing. [This pattern was created with the traditional Staffordshire Potteries ‘print and enamel’ method. A printed outline transfer was added to the ware, and the all-over pattern outline was then hand painted in green and yellow enamels. This more traditional way of decorating ware was used at this time by Shelley Potteries, Wedgwood and others, and for many of the Biarritz tableware patterns by Clarice. This pattern dates from 1933, is spelt ‘Crepe de Chene’ on backstamps, and was also produced in a blue dominant colourway. LG]

An extensive range of patterns was produced from 1929-31 in this unique, highly demanding turquoise and purple glaze; it was the most expensive range of ‘art pottery’ Clarice Cliff ever produced. DM]

Crocus continued until 1963 in many colourways and styles such was its worldwide appeal, and many pieces were painted by the ‘Crocus girl’ Ethel Barrow. LG]

An original 1930’s customer leaflet for a Clarice Cliff "As you like it" table decoration printed to one side with a photograph of a set decorated in Blue Firs with various arrangement display ideas and description to the reverse, measures 14cm by 17cm, together with a similar period magazine advert for "Bizarre Ware" with staged photographs, later card mounted. [‘As You like it’ customer leaflet. This original leaflet was given to customers to explain how it could ingeniously be arranged in many different ways. The set originally comprised shapes 657, 658 and 659 but soon Clarice created a square section tall vase shape 689 which was then also offered with the set. The leaflet title ‘An Ever Changing Table Decoration’ was replaced with the more inventive name for the set of ‘As you like it’. The extra shape and the change of title show how Clarice was meticulous at constantly improving her imaginative wares. DM]

DM]
Forest Glen - A Clarice Cliff advertising plaque circa 1935 hand decorated with a small cottage to a landscape within black and blue banding, hand painted Forest Glen by Clarice Cliff Wilkinson England, Height 6cm. Condition - No chips, cracks or restoration. [The usual Delecia style sky could not be created on such a small piece but uniquely it has a black ‘frame’ never added on actual examples, which gives it great impact. The backstamp is not in Clarice Cliff’s handwriting but that of the day-waged paintress who produced the piece. LG]
