A Rare Pair Of Scottish All-Metal Flintlock Belt Pistols Gifted By William Gorden, 18th Earl Of Sutherland To Capt. Jas. Sutherland In 1763By Alex r. Campbell Dun. Fecit, Dated 1763With three-stage barrels each engraved with scrolling foliage and with flared octagonal muzzle, fluted breeches each with ramp at the rear notched to form a back-sight, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks each decorated with scrolling foliage, bevelled cocks en suite, three-quarter stocks and ram's horn butts inlaid with symmetrical silver scrollwork and interlace, all against an engraved ground enriched with dots, the undersides each with three foliate engraved silver panels, the butts each with a silver escutcheon on one side engraved 'Gift W. Earl of Sutherland to Cap.t. Jas. Sutherland 1763', and on the other with the Sutherland crest and motto, an Earl's coronet above, silver button triggers and prickers, the former each engraved with a flower-head (the latter old replacements), lightly engraved slender belt hooks each on an elaborately pierced mount, and original slender steel ramrods each with pierced baluster tip (some wear overall) (2) 20.3 cm. barrelsFootnotes:The Sutherland Fencibles were raised in Scotland from the area of Sutherland and Caithness in 1759 and disbanded in 1799.
