DAVID MACBETH SUTHERLAND R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1883-1974), A COMMON GRAZING - WEST HIGHLANDS, signed oil on board, framed, inscribed verso and with artist's label, 45 x 37cm. Provenance: by descent through the artists family. Footnote: David Macbeth Sutherland (1883–1973) was a distinguished Scottish artist and educator whose works often come up for auction, reflecting his important role in Scottish art history. Born in Wick, Caithness, he studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, where he developed a notable style in landscape painting. His work, known for its atmospheric depictions of the Scottish Highlands, captures the region’s natural beauty with a keen eye for light and weather.Sutherland’s contributions extend beyond his paintings; he was also a significant figure in art education. He served as Head of Gray’s School of Art from 1934 to 1948, where he influenced many future Scottish artists.
