Lot 435

A Franklin Mint 1930 Bugatti Royale (In a different box from the description on the label)

Lot 75

Registration No: BJA 325KChassis No: 1S51021MOT: July 2022Current ownership since 2015Subject to a gearbox overhaul in 2014Offered with a collection of invoices and old MOT'sConverted from a coupe to a roadster in the early 1990sPLEASE NOTE: The estimate on this lot is now £48,000 to £55,000This desirable manual transmission V12 is understood to have been restored and converted from a coupe in the early 1990s at which time the odometer was reset. Although no invoices are present for the conversion it was clearly carried out to a high standard and the car looks resplendent with its red coachwork, black interior, and chrome wire wheels. Indeed, it has since won numerous prizes including the Bugatti Owner’s Club ‘Scuderia Prize’ and ‘Best in Show’ at a Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Isle Of Man Tour. Whilst in the hands of previous owners it was treated to engine works by Chequered Flag in 2011 and a gearbox overhaul at a cost of £4500 in 2014. Acquired by the vendor in 2015, more recent attention has included the fitment of a new electronic distributor cap and rotor arm in July this year. Offered with a collection of invoices, old MoTs dating back to 1993, original operating manual and sales and service book. ‘BJA325K’ is, in our opinion, sensibly priced when compared to the values of restored original examples with the vendor currently rating the paintwork, bodywork and interior as “Good” with “Very Good” engine plus transmission and is offered with an MOT certificate into July 2022.By 1971, Jaguar's jaw-dropping E-Type had been in production for a decade. Despite continual improvements, new emissions legislation in the all-important American market threatened to strangle the big cat's performance. Jaguar responded by giving its revered sportscar fresh claws in the shape of a 5343cc V12 developed from the stillborn XJ13 Le Mans project car. The new engine was both effortlessly powerful and eerily refined. "The turbine-like smoothness with which the engine provides a sustained shove in the back is almost uncanny, the more so when one accelerates hard in top gear without even a gearchange to interrupt one's headlong dash into the distance" (Autocar 5th July 1973).Footnote: For more information, please contact:James McWilliamjames.mcwilliam@handh.co.uk07943 584760

Original vintage advertising poster for Classic Prescott held on Sunday June 2 Organised by Bugatti Owners Club and sponsored by Mumm Cordon Rouge Champagne, the poster features a car going uphill, with stylised title lettering and text over the image that reads - Speed Hillclimb and Concours d'Elegance. This poster art of Raymond Mays hillclimbing with 'Cordon Rouge' in 1924 is based on a contemporary water-colour by Amherst Villiers, the brilliant engineer who supertuned the Brescia Bugatti for Mays. In the summer of 1924 Raymond Mays was the man to beat in British speed hillclimbs. His Brescia Bugatti was named 'Cordon Rouge' after his favourite champagne. Commemorating Mays' achievements, The House of Seagram, importers of Cordon Rouge champagne, are again sponsoring this Prescott meeting for pre-1960 cars. A special Concours d'Elegance has been organised by the magazine 'Classic Car'. Very good condition, foxing. Country of issue: UK, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 49.5x36, year of printing: 1974.

Lot 332

A lovely example of the feline AC Ace, superbly returned to life by one of the UK's most talented engineers. An original, home market, 1955 Ace finished in the rare factory colour of Pacific Green with a Black leather interior and registered on the 13th April in Surrey as WPL 750The original AC two-litre engine was replaced with the highly desirable Bristol D2 in the early sixtiesPurchased by John Gardiner of Crosthwaite and Gardiner in 1966A full restoration eventually commenced in 2005 resulting in one of the finest mechanically and bodily restored Aces in existenceComplete with a provenance file containing the 'buff' logbook, photos of the restoration, some recent invoices and an MOT valid until June 2022.The AC Ace first appeared at Earls Court in 1953 and epitomised a new era of British post-war sports car production. The owners of AC, Charles and Derek Hurlock, along with AC agent, Ken Rudd, transformed the company's reputation by taking a racing special and putting it into production, with notable stylistic influences from Italian sports cars of the era. The result was a car that delivered both on the road, and particularly on the track thanks to the input of racing chassis designer John Tojeiro. Tojeiro employed the same simple tubular ladder-type chassis with an aluminium body that he had used in his earlier specials, however, the Ace differed by being fitted with all-round independent suspension by transverse springs (the first British sports car to do so), ensuring superb handling with minimal body roll and plenty of feedback. Such was the success of the Ace chassis, it became the foundation for the mighty Shelby Cobras with over three times the power of the original 105bhp, Weller designed, six-cylinder engine. The outdated AC unit eventually made way for the more refined Bristol straight-six, which had evolved from the pre-war BMW 328. The Bristol engine was far more suited to racing, as demonstrated with some success by Cooper, and in its standard form developed 128bhp at 6000rpm. Consequently, it is the Bristol-engined Ace that is most sought after by collectors. The Ace Bristol enjoyed significant competition success being campaigned by enthusiastic club racers, private owners and most famously by the Ken Rudd team at Le Mans in 1957 and 1958. Bristol-engined Aces were run successfully at Le Mans from 1957 to 1962 by various entrants, however, it was on a domestic club level where Ace Bristols earned their reputation as superb racing machines. In total, only 466 Ace Bristols were manufactured and they are justifiably hot property amongst collectors as very few examples become available on the open market. The AC Ace was a truly innovative piece of design and represents the foundation from which the legendary Cobra was developed.John Gardiner, the legendary toolmaker and restoration engineer, joined Dick Crosthwaite in the sixties to form a partnership, Crosthwaite and Gardiner, that was eventually to become established as world-class providers of engineering and manufacturing services to the historic motor racing community. Their reputation has grown with all marques including Bugatti, Maserati and Jaguar and restorations on many of the most famous historic racing cars in the world. It's no surprise then, that with a demanding growing business, John Gardiner took nearly forty years to commence a personal project and embark on the restoration of an AC Ace that he had purchased in 1966. The AC in question was an original, home market, 1955 Ace finished in the rare factory colour of Pacific Green with a Black leather interior and registered on the 13th April in Surrey as WPL 750, a registration number it still retains to this day. The 'buff' log book notes that the original AC two-litre engine was replaced with the highly desirable Bristol D2 in the early sixties, prior to John's purchase. It was not until circa 2005 that John felt he had enough time to devote to the project and he embarked on a full nut and bolt restoration aided by the substantial resources of his company and his own (perfectionist) engineering skills. Those skills and attention to detail are evident in the result and anybody who spends time in the presence of this wonderful motor car will appreciate John's dedication and standards. The result is one of the finest mechanically and bodily restored Aces in existence and it's no surprise that it drives beautifully and is perfectly balanced on the road.Sadly, John passed away not long after the car was finished and it was registered to his wife who now feels that the time is right for someone else to enjoy her late husband's 'pride and joy'.It come complete with a provenance file containing the 'buff' logbook, photos of the restoration at Crosthwaite and Gardiner, some recent invoices and an MOT valid until June 2022.When Carroll Shelby stood on the winners rostrum at Le Mans in 1959 deep in conversation with AC Ace Class Winners Ted Whiteaway and John Turner he obviously had a vision ... as they say - the rest is history. The Ace Bristol is a car that rightfully deserves its place in the history books as 'grandfather' to the legendary AC Cobra, and this lovely classic offers the opportunity to enjoy that history whenever you fancy as well as, perhaps, quietly appreciating the skill and craftsmanship that led Dick Crosthwaite and John Gardiner to contribute to the survival of some of the world's most significant classic cars. Lot 540

A splendid example of the revered sports roadster, with a well documented history and in an enviable condition. Regarded as one of the most sought-after pre-war sports carsA highly thought-of example, it was despatched from the Blackpool factory on the 1st July 1937 and delivered through Henlys of London, to a Mr HeadExported to the US in 1955, it would spend the next 55 years in California in dutiful ownership, most prominently by Elliot A. Weiner, who kept the car for four decades and regularly displayed it at local showsAccompanied by a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, copies of assorted SS100 Registers and the original owner’s instruction bookSeveral display plaques can be seen under the bonnet, as well as a competitor’s plaque from the 1956 Stockton Road RacesThe recipient of some cosmetic restoration in 2013 and a mechanical overhaul in 2019 by UK specialists Davenport CarsFeatured in the SS100 Registry since 1971A splendid example of the revered sports roadster that gave rise to Jaguar Cars, it would be an ideal entrant for the Mille Miglia Retro or similarProfessional images to follow soon.In September 1935 SS launched their most advanced and significant new car, the first to carry the name Jaguar, though then not as the brand but as a model name - the 'SS Jaguar 2½-litre Saloon'. Standard manufactured a new chassis to SS design and a Standard 6-cylinder engine was re-engineered by Harry Weslake to an overhead valve design, which Standard then manufactured specifically for SS.At this time, the company also produced their first true sports car named the 'SS Jaguar 100'. Beautifully styled in the manner of its SS90 predecessor, the newcomer employed a shorter, 102"-wheelbase chassis and a revised version of the 2,663cc Standard six which, equipped with Weslake's overhead-valve cylinder head and breathing through twin SU carburettors, now produced 104bhp.Although a fine touring car, the SS100 was marketed as primarily for competition work. Its first major success came early, if somewhat unexpectedly, when Tommy Wisdom, crewed by his wife, won the arduous International Alpine Trial in 1936, beating Bugatti and bringing the fledgling marque to the attention of the Continental public. This would be the first of many successful rallying forays, including class wins in the RAC events of 1937 and 1938, and the Alpine (outright) again in 1948. Around 198 2½-Litre and 116 of the later 3½-Litre cars had been made by the time SS 100 production was prematurely ended by the outbreak of war.The car presented here is a 1937 SS100 2½-Litre (chassis #18116) despatched from factory on the 1st July 1937 and was delivered via Henlys of London to a Mr Head. Like many SS100s, in 1955 the car was exported from England to the USA by Don Schoenert of North Hollywood and would spend the next 55 years in California. Mr Schoenert later sold the car to Bud R Fisher of Burbank and by the time of the earliest Classic Jaguar Association SS100 register, published in 1971, it was owned by Elliot Weiner of Escondido and described as being in ‘restored condition in white with chrome wheels’.As is the case with so many SS100s, the original engine was replaced at some stage in its life but the one currently fitted is a correct 2½-Litre, SS stamped unit. Whilst in Mr Weiner's hands the car was a regular show contender and in 1981 achieved a 1st place at the San Diego Concours d'Elegance. Several show plaques are displayed under the bonnet along with, rather intriguingly, a competitor's plaque from the Stockton Road Races in 1956.The recipient of some cosmetic restoration in 2013 and a mechanical overhaul in 2019 by UK specialists Davenport Cars, who also utilised their popular 5th gear addition and a new set of Blockley tyres on the car, this highly thought-of example, now set-up by marque experts, is said to drive exceedingly well, with a strong responsive engine breathing through a vocal exhaust!Representing a rare opportunity to acquire a well-documented example of the model, accompanied by a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, copies of assorted SS100 Registers and the original owner’s instruction book, 18116 would make an excellent tour/rally car and is eligible for a wide variety of the most prestigious international historic motorsport events, including the Mille Miglia. The SS100 was one of the fastest and best-handling sports cars of its day, as its competition record pays witness to - the quintessential pre-war sporting Jaguar. 1 of only 198 examples built, this is real opportunity to acquire a very special motorcar.SpecificationMake: SSCModel: JAGUAR 2½-LITRE ROADSTERYear: 1937Chassis Number: 18116Registration Number: TBCClick here for more details and images
