Le véritable succès arrive en juin 1948, lorsqu'il remporte le Prix de la critique ex-æquo avec Bernard Lorjou, de vingt ans son aîné.Jeune homme au col roulé est emblématique de l'oeuvre de Bernard Buffet, notamment par ses traits noirs et saillants qui sculptent le sujet. Ce dernier est vêtu d'un col roulé beige et d'une veste noire, arborant un nez allongé et complexe, ainsi qu'un regard hagard trahissant une âme meurtrie. Cette vision austère, caractéristique de Buffet, se retrouve inlassablement dans l'ensemble de son oeuvre picturale. Les toiles de cette première période, comme celle que nous proposons à la vente, figurent parmi les symboles les plus marquants de l'expressionnisme misérabiliste, témoignant de l'inquiétude de l'homme au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.Collection M. & Mme SLAVICLes hôtels particuliers de l'Avenue Beau-Séjour (N°10 à 18) à Champel ont été construits en 1911 par l'architecte Etienne Chiocca en prolongement et dans le même esprit des constructions de David Moriaud pour Champel-les-Bains. Construits à l'abri d'un muret rustique, de grilles et de haies, ils bénéficient, à l'arrière, d'agréables jardins et d'une vue dégagée.Les terrains de l'Avenue de Beau-Séjour faisaient vraisemblablement partie de l'ancien domaine de Beau-Séjour où s'élevait la belle maison XVIIIe (à côté de l'hôpital et dominant l'Arve) construite vers 1780 par Jean-Henri Meuron pour la famille Pictet. La maison fut achetée en 1831 par Henri Venel pour y installer un pensionnat de jeunes gens. Celui-ci accueillit quelques pensionnaires de haut rang, comme en 1835 un certain Napoléon de Montfort, second fils de Jérôme Bonaparte. La maison fut rachetée en 1874 par David Moriaud, promoteur des bains thérapeutiques de l'Arve dont l'activité cessa après la Première Guerre mondiale.L'hôtel particulier Beau-Séjour n°10 est propriété de Monsieur Jean-Pierre Slavic depuis plus de 35 ans.

A 20thC American oak extending dining table, the rectangular top with a rounded edge, raised on twin pedestals on shaped feet, 76cm high, the top 132cm x 102cm, with two extension leaves, each measuring 30cm, together with eight dining chairs, each with a caned back and floral and leaf carved shaped top, and a 20thC American style hardwood display cabinet/ buffet hatch, the top with two glazed doors flanked by two further glazed panels and glazed sides, the base with an arrangement of cabinets, on plinth, 190cm high, 141cm wide, 41cm deep (AF). (10)NOTE: The upholstery in this lot does not comply with the 1988 (Fire & Fire Furnishing) Regulations, unless sold to a known exporter or upholsterer it will be cut from the frame before leaving the premises.
