A tribal cassowary bone lime spatula Papua New Guinea, late 19th century / early 20th century, the top open carved as a stylised parrot head, typical of Abelam and Kwoma region, the outer segment pierced to support an elaborate headdress of platted twine, bordered with nassa shells and topped with a porcelain toothed mohawk, twine and bark cordage collar, 14¼in. (36cm.) long. *Dog teeth were so valuable to natives that during the colonial period, 1884-1914, Germans manufactured and imported glass and porcelain teeth for bartering, which would often get used for tribal ornaments.
A Papua New Guinea human bone dagger Homo sapien femur bone, probably Upper Sepik River, late 19th / early 20th century, the proximal end acting as a hilt, with abstract incised carving on the outer surface below the deeply cut condyles, the outer segments of the joint pierced where tassels or feathers would once have been attached, the polished and rich golden-brown blade adorned with eleven tally strikes, 13in. (33cm.) long. * A man would inherit the femur of his father after the corpse was reduced to a skeleton, or was alternatively taken from the body of a slain enemy, occasionally being carved into a weapon. The physical contact between the wielder`s hand and the dagger`s designs were believed to provide supernatural powers. The daggers were mainly used for finishing off human victims brought down by arrows and spears.
A Chinese boxwood carving of a reclining Buddha probably 19th century, well carved, the smiling Buddha with inset bone eyes and teeth, holding a pearl and a bat in his hands, reclining against a pillow whilst five boy attendants clamber over and tickle him, 7¾in. (19.75cm.) long, 2¾in. (7cm.) high, on a pierced and carved hardwood stand. (2)
