Provenance: the vendor worked on the RMS Queen Mary transatlantic route in the 1960s between Southampton and New York, and when in NYC was a frequent attendee at folk clubs in Greenwich Village. In September 1961 he attended a performance by Bob Dylan at 'Gerdes Folk City', making a recording (see lot 471 here) and taking several photographs. He had the photographs developed the following day and returned the following night, whereupon he asked Dylan to sign them. In 1962 on another visit he asked Dylan to sign a copy of his debut album (this lot). He also obtained handwritten directions/instructions from Dylan (on the back of an original ticket for this performance at 'Gerde's) on how to visit Woody Guthrie, who was in hospital at the time (see lot 470 here), this note featured in the book 'My Name Is New York' (Powerhouse Books, NYC).

Two further photographs depict another of the performing artists on that night's bill. Three of the photographs have been signed and inscribed by Dylan to the verso. One reading "Woody Guthrie in John Birch Out Bob Dylan", one reading "Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues It Really Happened You Know Bob Dylan" and one simply signed with Dylan's name. The photographs are sold here with full copyright and right to reproduce and a letter to that effect will be issued to winning bidder. Later, on another visit in 1962 he asked Dylan to sign a copy of his debut album (see lot 468 here).

The vendor had attended a performance by Dylan and was a regular visitor to the folk clubs in NYC during the early 1960s. During one conversation with Dylan he mentioned that he'd like to visit Woody Guthrie, who was in hospital at that time (Dylan was a frequent visitor) - hence the written instructions on how to reach him. This note is included in the book 'My Name Is New York' about Woody Guthrie's time in NYC. A roll of BASF audio tape (4" spool) containing approx 15 minutes of audio, previously unpublished, of a performance by Bob Dylan at 'Gerde's Folk City' in New York City, September 1961. On the recording which is of very good quality, Dylan is Introduced as "Bob Dylan from New Mexico". It is believed that this tape contains the only known recording of Dylan performing '..T For Texas' unaccompanied.Tracklisting on the tape is as follows: Introduction by compere Brother John Sellers, T for Texas, tuning up with some quiet spoken words by Dylan inc an aside on his voice sounding bad due to a cold "I was up all night reading the New York Times" (this possibly the famous Robert Shelton profile that helped to launch Dylan to stardom, see here), Handsome Molly, more speaking by Dylan, a break in the recording, a rousing version of 'Rising Sun Blues', a break in recording- then from 12 minutes to 15 minutes (end of tape) - recording of 'headliners' the 'Greenbriar Boys'.Provenance: the vendor worked on the RMS Queen Mary transatlantic route in the 1960s between Southampton and New York, and when in NYC was a frequent attendee at folk clubs in Greenwich Village.
