Bob Dylan: `New York Slate`, pastel and ink on board, circa 1968. Albert Grossman and members of the group The Band asked Bob Dylan to design the cover for their first album `Music From The Big Pink`, named after the house they rented in Woodstock. This piece of artwork was Dylan~s first submission. He later produced an acrylic painting that was brighter and more abstract, as The Band disliked his original submission; replacing the Owl with an Elephant, that later version was set to become the cover for the album. Levon Helm retained the ownership of this ~New York Slate~ work and, after surviving a house fire in the early 1990s, he sold it to the present owner. The artwork has very faded inscriptions by Helm to the reverse, with faint notations to Grossman, and Dylan~s signature with a circular design, twin arrows and dated ~68~, also signed in black ink by Joseph Forno Jr, road manager. With later signatures from Levon Helms 98 and Rick Danko in silver pen; accompanied by a three page manuscript provenance from the vendor.
