Lot 175

Coldplay: the original concept artwork by Coldplay and Pilar Zeta for the band's 2015 album A Head Full Of Dreams,Parlophone/Atlantic Records, the original collage conceived and created specifically as cover art for the hugely successful album; the creation of the collage was a collaboration by the artist Pilar Zeta and Coldplay resulting in a large mixed media montage which combines childhood photographs of each band member, their children's artwork, printed card, metallic paper, acrylic paint, gold leaf, coloured pencil on paper, cut out text, all applied to a large canvas; themes include - the universe, space travel, youth, nature and community, all surrounding a kaleidoscope of colour at the centre of the design, framed and glazed, and accompanied by a copy of the album on vinyl, a signed presentation card and a letter of provenance from the band, 137in x 70in (350cm x 180cm)Footnotes:Provenance:Generously donated by Coldplay to Oxfam for this sale. All funds raised from the purchase of this item will be used to support Oxfam's response to the coronavirus pandemic worldwide.A Head Full Of Dreams is the seventh studio album by Coldplay. It has sold over 7 million copies worldwide and was nominated for 'British Album of the Year' at the 2016 Brit Awards. This large collage was a joint collaboration between the artist Pilar Zeta and Coldplay. It was conceived and created during album recording sessions in the band's London studio. The collage was used for the album's cover art and accompanying booklet. It also featured as cover art for all of the album's singles and as screen visuals throughout the record-breaking 'A Head Full Of Dreams' tour. Pilar Zeta (B.1986) is an Argentinean art director, known of her surrealist ideology and experience working with music labels to create bespoke artworks. She has worked with Island Records, Big Beat Records, Ultramajic, Get Physical, Visionquest, and Fool's Gold Records. During her collaboration with Coldplay she instructed the band to include their own childhood photographs, original artwork and their children's drawings into the artwork to see what they could create. In an interview on the Coldplay's official website she discusses the project, ...Guy had this huge box with really awesome old photos that he was cutting out. And Chris would come and he would do a painting and then we'd try to include it in the collage, or he would come and paint a bit of the collage. So it was like a mix of things. And then all of a sudden, a week later we have this huge collage done...I didn't do a mock-up of how the collage would look. It was just organic. When asked who else worked on the piece she elaborates...the band's kids came and they did all these beautiful paintings, so I wanted to include those too. So if you see the mountains of the collage at the top, the layers, it's pieces of their kids paintings that I scanned in. So it's like a mix of everything. And at the end it looked really good....The collage was not intended to be on the album cover, however on seeing the finished piece Coldplay wanted it to be incorporated in some way. By mirroring areas of the design and adding a bright multi-coloured Flower Of Life symbol at the centre, Chris was surprised at the dramatic visual and powerful meaning behind it and the band agreed it would be the cover for their up and coming album. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. CARTER (SUSANNAH)The Frugal Housewife, or Complete Woman Cook. Wherein the Art of Dressing all Sorts of Viands with Cleanliness, Decency and Elegance, is Explained in Five Hundred Approved Receipts... And Making of English Wines... With Various Bills of Fare, one engraved plate (of 2?), 12 woodcut illustrations of bills of fare, some mainly light browning and soiling, corners of title slightly chipped, paper flaw to I1 with loss of blank margin, contemporary sheep, rebacked with red morocco spine label, rubbed, corners restored [cf. Bitting pp.78-79; Maclean pp.23-24; Oxford p.122-123, all describing other editions], 12mo, F. Newbery, [c.1775-1780]Footnotes:UNRECORDED EARLY EDITION OF THIS POPULAR AND INFLUENTIAL COOKBOOK, THE AUTHOR'S ONLY PUBLICATION. Little is known of Susannah Carter, other than the fact that she hailed from Clerkenwell as mentioned on the title-page. The work was first published in 1765 by Francis Newbery in London, and some two or three years later by James Hoey in Dublin (Maclean located 3 copies of the 1765 edition in America, but none are now listed on ESTC or in auction records). In 1772 the book was reprinted in London and Boston, the American edition being only the second cookbook printed in America, following Eliza Smith's Compleat Housewife (Williamsburg, 1742). Carter went on to become extremely well-known across the Atlantic as subsequent editions were expanded and adapted to include American recipes. The date of the present copy is uncertain. The fact that the imprint is that of 'F. Newbery' indicates that it was printed before Francis Newbery's death in 1780, whereupon his widow Elizabeth carried on the business under the imprint 'E. Newbery'. However, the editions prior to and including a Dublin edition of around 1775 comprise 168 or 180 pages, whereas ours, and later editions, were expanded to 192 pages. All of this would tend to suggest that our copy is dated between 1775 and 1780. As no collation has been found, it is not clear if there should be only one plate in this copy but other editions generally have two.Provenance: 'Catherine Jones, her book 1785', inscription on front paste-down; manuscript recipes in a nineteenth century hand below inscription and on rear free endpaper; Cardiff Public Libraries, old ink stamps on paste-downs and on verso of title (with shelf number in ink). This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The health and safety of both our customers and team remains the utmost priority, we are therefore operating to strict COVID-19 guidelines and full instructions will be given when making your appointment. This gorgeous convertible has clearly been well restored at some point UK, right-hand drive, manual column change, 29,965 miles indicated Finished in Seafoam Green with US-influenced styling cues including five chrome strips running down the bonnet, a built-in centre spot lamp, a "Flying A" mascot on each front wing and rear-wheel spats Nicely refurbished tan interior and green carpets. All very attractive Tidy engine bay. Has obviously been well-cared for although currently a non-runner Potentially an excellent show car. No history file or paperwork NB. On offer from a private collection, this vehicle has not been used for some time. It is a non-runner and is strictly sold as seen. Launched in 1949, the wonderful A90 Atlantic was by far the most flamboyant model in the otherwise staid Austin range. Looking like no car before or since, it ultimately proved a brave gamble that did not pay off. The retro-futuristic styling (art deco with a rocket age twist) was penned by Ricardo 'Dick' Burzi, Austin's chief stylist who had been poached from Lancia after being forced to flee Italy when he insulted Mussolini (not a good idea in the 1930s!). A riot of chrome, curves and quirkiness, the Atlantic was aimed squarely at the American market and was instantly identifiable by its Cyclops-style third headlamp. Available as a Sports Coupe or a Convertible, it featured almost unheard of luxuries such as powered windows and, in convertible form, a hydraulically operated hood. A range of innovative 'Jewelescent' metallic colours was also offered in shades such as 'Seafoam Green' and 'Desert Gold'. Powered by the same torquey 2.6-litre four-cylinder engine that later found fame in the Austin-Healey 100/4, it had a four-speed column-change gearbox and could cruise all day at 80mph with another 12mph on tap when needed. To prove its sporting credentials, a convertible A90 broke 63 'stock car' records at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in April 1949, pounding round the track non-stop for seven days and averaging over 70mph including halts for fuel. Sadly for the A90 though, its launch was totally overshadowed by the even more sensational Jaguar XK120 and fast though it was, its Steady-Freddy four-cylinder engine did not have the appeal of a US V8 or the Jaguar 6-cylinder. Despite Austin's best marketing efforts, only 350 were sold in America and just 7,981 were made in total before production ground to a halt in 1952. With only a handful still surviving, these glamorous machines rarely come to market and are increasingly sought after today. Finished in Seafoam Green, his gorgeous convertible has clearly been well restored at some point. It displays all the US-influenced styling cues including five chrome strips running down the bonnet, a built-in centre spot lamp, a "Flying A" mascot on each front wing and rear-wheel spats and has a nicely refurbished Tan interior and green carpets.
