Lot 54

- Reputedly factory upgraded with B36 specification bodywork in 1976 - Campaigned on both sides of the Atlantic in 1600cc and 2000cc guises - Most recently prepared by Racing Fabrications and 'on the button' - Outright winner of the Martini class at the 2013 Oulton Park Gold Cup - Last raced at Hockenheim during 2014 Further Info: David Gordon's book 'Chevron, The Derek Bennett Story', lists chassis B23-73-25 as being the penultimate of 23 Chevron B23 frames constructed in 1973, and originally intended for use in the FIA Championship of Makes and South Africa's popular Springbok series; although there are no known records of it actually appearing in either. According to information supplied to the vendor by its previous keeper, this Chevron returned to the marque's Bolton factory in 1976 where it was enhanced with a roll cage and B36 specification bodywork. The B23 employed a tubular chassis frame, whereas the B36 utilised a monocoque structure. As such the upgrade would have been aerodynamic rather than structural. Nevertheless, we are informed that (a) the changes were sufficient for a second identity to be issued - M36-76-05 (the 'M' perhaps standing for 'Modified') - and (b) both relevant chassis plates accompany the car. We also understand that there is another B23 numbered as B23-73-25 extant in the USA and a B36 numbered as B36-76-05 (and underpinned by a monocoque chassis) resident in the same country. Following its modifications the re-bodied B23/M36 is believed to have been actively raced in Europe, including rounds at Mugello and Vallelunga. Between 1981 and 1988 it was campaigned with a 1600cc rather than 2000cc Ford unit driving through the current FG400 Hewland transaxle; though the lighter FG200 option would have sufficed. It was then apparently campaigned in Italian hillclimb events before being extensively restored by a noted Italian race shop - this work included the fitment of new floors, Lockheed braking system, starter motor, small capacity (hillclimb-sized) fuel cell, plumbing and paintwork. In 1999 title was assumed by a Mr Tom Black of Portland, Oregon, who imported the Chevron to the USA. He evidently contested one race at the Portland International Raceway that year, as well as replacing all the previous bodywork with new lighter components and supplanting the 1600cc engine with a 2000cc 12-bolt crank Cosworth BDP unit. During the ensuing year the Chevron changed hands once more and, despite the extensive work recently carried out in Italy, the new keeper set about a no-expense-spared restoration via West Coast expert Neil Porter. Safety, competitiveness and reliability were his watch words, and he had the entire suspension renewed or overhauled and the Hewland transmission fully renovated by Taylor Racing. The halfshafts were also attended to. However, the major change concerned the replacement of the existing Cosworth engine with a state-of-the-art Geoff Richardson example, purchased on the owner's behalf by Arnie Loyning at a cost reputedly exceeding $50,000 - this unit is understood to have produced 294bhp @ 9,000rpm. It was in this guise that the car was offered for sale by well-known Californian car specialist Fantasy Junction. At this stage the Chevron was acquired by the current keeper, who repatriated it in 2010 and obtained its MSA Historic Technical Passport the following year. The most recent bout of preparation has fallen to Ian Jones of Racing Fabrications and the Chevron is these days powered by a Craig Beck-prepared Cosworth BDG unit. After successful outings at Dijon and the Oulton Park Gold Cup in 2013 where it won outright in the Martini class, the sports racer's most recent race was at Hockenheim last year. Nevertheless, this splendidly-presented Chevron is reportedly 'on the button' and ready to propel a new keeper to success on the circuits. Finished in a striking Blue and Yellow livery, chassis B23-73-25/M36-76-05 comes complete with all relevant paperwork. The story of Chevron Cars Ltd is one of success and tragedy. It was founded in 1965 by Derek Bennett, an intuitive but largely self-taught engineer and talented amateur racing driver. Lancashire born and bred, he graduated from an interest in stock cars to building an 1172cc Ford-powered special and then a successful Clubmans car; the demand for replicas of which kick-started his career as a constructor. The marque's heyday was from the late 1960s and the birth of the immortal B8 to the Bennett's untimely death in a hang gliding accident in 1978. Its greatest successes came in the 2-litre sports racing category, and Chevrons won their class at Le Mans no less than three times - 1974 (B23); 1979 and 1980 (B36); ie with exactly the models embodied by chassis B23-73-25/M36-76-05.

A 1:64 SCALE BUILDER’S MODEL FOR THE FAMED ‘NORTH ATLANTIC GREYHOUND’ MAURETANIA, BUILT FOR CUNARD BY SWAN HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON, TYNE AND WEAR, 1906, carved from laminated wood, replete with gilt and painted fittings and superstructure and finished in Cunard service livery, mounted on seven turned balustrade supports on later display base within modern two-part case supported on three ebonised plinths. Model measurements -- 42 x 153½ x 17in. (106.5 x 390 x 43cm.); Cased measurements overall -- 79 x 173½ x 24in. (200.5 x 440 x 61cm.), Provenance: Loaned by Swan Hunter to the Science Museum, London 1938-2015, Ref No. 1938-507. This model is available for viewing from mid-March, 2015 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Chelsea, Imperial Road, Imperial Wharf, SW6 2GA - please see map inside back cover. Charles Miller Ltd is grateful for their kind assistance. It is thought that this model probably appeared in a pre-War exhibition about the famed ‘Blue Riband’ but was then dismantled for the duration of hostilities. After the War, the ageing 1864 museum buildings were largely rebuilt and the fine collection of both ship and engineering models it had inherited from the old South Kensington Museum (which in turn had inherited them from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects) returned in the 1963 installation of the Shipping Gallery. It seems likely that it was at this time that the models were removed from their original cases and placed on uniform plinths within more standard exhibition cases. The Shipping Gallery was closed in 2012, having lasted fully forty-nine years, and the models removed to various storage facilities in London and Wiltshire. The precise fate of the original ship model cases, bases and plates appears not to have been recorded and, sadly, the one which had housed this particular model has still not been located and must therefore be presumed destroyed. A companion model to this lot, which retains its original carved mahogany case, display base and builder’s plates, can be seen in the Discovery Museum, Newcastle to where it was likewise loaned by Swan Hunter in 1938. Of all the great liners that plied the North Atlantic, the first-named Mauretania was perhaps the most famous. Conceived with her sister Lusitania, the two ships were built as a British response to the increasing threat to Cunard’s domination of the transatlantic passenger trade posed by the White Star Line which, in 1901, had passed into American ownership. Mauretania, at 31,938 tons, was launched on 20th September 1906, and was ready for trials exactly a year later. Her builders, Swan Hunter, handed her over to Cunard on 7th November 1907, and she sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 16 November. On the return passage, she established a new record for the eastward crossing with an average speed of 23.69 knots, amply justifying the faith that had been placed in her giant turbine engines. In May 1908 she broke the record for the westbound crossing, only losing it to her sister a few months later. In September 1909 her average speed on the westward passage reached 26.06 knots and this new record was to stand for twenty years until broken by the German liner Bremen. Both Lusitania and Mauretania were financed with Government loans and, when completed, Cunard received an annual subsidy for them in return for the promise to make the ships available to the Government in the event of a national emergency. When the Great War broke out, however, the authorities perceived at once that the two liners were far too large to be fitted-out as cruisers. At first Mauretania was laid up and then served as both a troop transport and a hospital ship. Lusitania continued the New York passenger service but fell victim to the German submarine U20, which torpedoed and sank her, with a huge loss of life, on 7 May 1915. After the Armistice in 1918, Mauretania was initially kept busy repatriating American troops until the following May, but on 27 June 1919, she cleared Southampton for New York and resumed the scheduled service with her new consort Aquitania. In July, 1921, Mauretania was severely damaged by fire in Southampton Docks and, during the subsequent repairs, her accommodation was remodelled and her coal furnaces were converted to oil. Returning to service in March, 1922, she once again justified the capital spent on her conversion by setting new speed records and regularly averaging 25.5 knots. Despite her advancing age, she was becoming an institution among the travelling public and became almost a living legend as the 1920s drew to a close. When she lost the ‘Blue Riband’ to the Bremen in July 1929, she took up the challenge to recover it immediately with her fastest-ever crossings over the measured distance. Her average speed on the homeward run of 27.2 knots just failed to catch the Bremen’s 27.9 but it was an astonishing achievement for the twenty-two year old veteran against the brand new German contender. The international economic climate sent her cruising to warmer waters after 1930, although she still did the occasional transatlantic crossing. She left New York for the last time on 26 September 1934, ironically the very same day that the Queen Mary was launched on Clydeside; Mauretania’s reign was drawing to an end. In April 1935 she was sold for scrapping and, following the auction of her interior fittings, she sailed for Rosyth and the breaker’s yard. The public mourned her as affectionately as they had honoured her in her prime. She had won for herself a place in maritime history such as no other steamship had ever done and it was not in the least surprising that even long after she had been broken up, she was still always known as ‘The Grand Old Lady of the Atlantic’.

WW2 Fleet Air Arm “Skua” Gunner’s 1940 Distinguished Service Medal Group of Six Medals. A rare group awarded to later Lieutenant Commander Frederick James Leonard De Frias DSM, who was awarded to the DSM for the destruction of an Italian Savoia 79 bomber during July 1940. Comprising: Distinguished Service Medal, “F.X. 80801 F.J.L. De Frias N Air. 1 F.A.A.”, 1939/45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. GC ... The medal group is accompanied by a small archive of original ephemera including his operational log book. The announcement of the award of the DSM appeared in the London Gazette on the 19th September 19140 “For courage and skill during an attack by Italian bombers. Frederick James Leonard De Frias a pre war RN ratings volunteered for aircrew training at the outbreak of the war and took his first flight on the 11th December 1939. After training, it was this aircraft type he found himself flying when posted to 803 Squadron operating from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. He soon found himself flying during the disastrous Norway campaign, participating in a number of dive bombing attacks and on the 9th June found himself engaging three Heinkel bombers. The following month the Ark Royal was deployed to the Mediterranean and saw the destruction of the French Fleet at Oran, De Frias flying over the fleet. On the 9th July De Frias was part of a three aircraft patrol when they came across a formation of 11 Italian Savoia 79 bombers. The Skua engaged and the Italian put up a stiff resistance. De Frias Skua made a diving attack and then pulled up under one of the Italian flights and engaged to the left flank aircraft with forward guns, before De Frias opened up with his rear gun, firing 200 rounds and a distance of 50 yards. The Savoia went into a steep dive and crashed, one crew member escaping by parachute. On the 1st August the squadron was engaged in the Western Mediterranean as part of “Force H” and on this day the log book records an aircraft being shot down. 803 Squadron was posted home and here re-equiped with the Fairy Fulmer and then deployed on the new aircraft carrier HMS Formidable. Returning to the Mediterranean he saw action throughout 1941, escort and support for the Malta convoys, bombardment of Tripoli, evacuation of forces from the Island of Crete. An interesting log book entry can be found on the 12th June 1941 “Engaged JU 88 after leader landed. Ship hit by bombs after we landed.” After this the squadron was deployed to Egypt and operated over the Western Desert. At the end of 1941 De Frias was posted back to the UK serving with 776 Squadron and then underwent Observer training and was later commissioned. His last logbook entry is for the 29th October 1942. Surviving the war he remained in the service and retired in 1958 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
