The edition has been limited to 100 copies on Simili Japon paper. 3 [in ink]' (colophon). The Busy Bee, or De Bezige Bij, began life during the Second World War and quickly became a remarkably successful clandestine publishing house, issuing broadsides and helping to raise funds to aid Jewish children to escape from the Nazis. Lot 64

A fine Second War ‘Malta Convoy’ D.S.M. group of six awarded to Stoker Chief Petty Officer C. E. Hughes, Royal Navy, for services when H.M.S. Kingston was hit by a 15-inch shell and later sunk whilst undergoing repairs in Malta Dockyard, Hughes being wounded in the same air raid; he had previously received a mention in despatches having been recommended for the D.S.M. Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (K.58629 E. C. Hughes. Ch. Sto.) impressed naming; 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf, mounted as worn, extremely fine (6) £1,400-£1,800 --- D.S.M. London Gazette 8 September 1942” ‘For gallantry, skill and seamanship in H.M. Ships... Kingston... in a brilliant action against strong enemy forces which were driven off and severely damaged. This action resulted in the safe passage to Malta of an important convoy.’ The recommendation states: ‘For fine leadership, initiative and devotion to duty as senior rating of damage control parties when the ship was hit by a 15” shell. Through his efforts and organising ability a fire which might have proved serious was extinguished before it had a chance to get out of control.’ In his report to the Admiralty Commander Philip Sommerville, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N., records: ‘I have the honour to report my proceedings during and after the action between the convoy escort and enemy surface forces during the passage of convoy MW10 from Alexandria to Malta. A Divisional torpedo attack was launched at an enemy Battleship accompanied by three Cruisers. These forces engaged the Division with main and secondary armaments. At 1846 Kingston was hit by a 15-inch shell which passed through the whaler on the starboard side, through No. 2 Boiler Room intake and the S.R.E. Room, and exploded under the port Oerlikon Platform. Shortly after managing a turn to fire our torpedoes the ship stopped. Before the enemy Battleship passed out of view she was seen to be on fire forward and the explosion of one torpedo was observed. The widespread damage to Kingston was quickly got under control by prompt and resourceful action by all hands. The fire in the S.R.E. Room was extinguished remarkably quickly. Nearly all the Torpedo tubes crew were killed or wounded and on the 4-inch gun deck no one escaped injury. Casualties were also sustained on the Oerlikon and searchlight platforms and at ‘X’ gun. One officer and fourteen ratings were killed and one officer and twenty ratings wounded. By 1905 the Kingston was able to proceed on the starboard engine at 16 knots which later increased to 20 knots. I proceeded independently to Malta. I entered Malta Harbour at 0838 on 23 March.’ Commander Philip Somerville was the son of Vice-Admiral H. C. Somerville and was killed in an air raid on Malta on Saturday 4 April 1942, along with one other officer and ten ratings, Chief Petty Officer Hughes being wounded in the same raid. Lieutenant G. J. Kirkby, D.S.C., later wrote to Hughes from H.M.S. Saunders on 29 October 1942:- ‘Dear Hughes, I was delighted to read your name among those in the recent list of awards for our action in March. Please accept my heartiest congratulations. It is a shame we are not still all happily together to celebrate in the old style in the Wardroom. I could then thank you personally for the splendid work you did on that occasion, and for your continuous hard work and efficiency and unfailing loyalty to all of us throughout all that grand commission. Are you recovered from the injuries you received in April? It nearly broke my heart to lose the Captain and so many friends, and to think of the old ship being so remorsely attacked during that unhappy period. I have been out of Destroyers since that time, but hope to go back very soon. Again let me congratulate you and wish you good luck.’ In his report to the Admiralty Lieutenant J. Cartwright, R.N., in temporary command of Kingston, wrote of her loss on 11 April 1942, when she received another direct hit which broke her back and she sank: ‘I regret to report the loss of H.M.S. Kingston under my command. The ship was dive bombed and sank in No. 4 Dock, being hit on the torpedo tubes by a bomb of heavy calibre. The ship had previously been hit by a bomb on 8 April , which caused extensive damage.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 11 June 1942, for services aboard H.M.S. Kingston (downgraded D.S.M. recommendation). Edward Charles Hughes was born in Hackney, London, on 21 January 1902, and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class at Victory on 24 March 1920. Led Zeppelin/And Others: A souvenir poster for the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert,2007,the limited edition poster for It Is A Great Life, This Life Of Music reunion, headlining Led Zeppelin and featuring Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman and more, edition 1136 of 1200, signed and annotated in white ink Harvey-thank you! Great job, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, framed, accompanied by a certificate, overall 18 3/4in x 26in (47.5cm x 66cm)Footnotes:Provenance:From the private collection of Harvey GoldsmithAhmet Ertegun was the President of Atlantic Records when he had a freak accident at a Rolling Stones concert. He was a huge inspiration to Harvey Goldsmith and he has referred to him as his USA mentor. Knowing the pairs close friendship, Harvey was instructed by Ahmet's widow immediately following the memorial service for him in New York, that he would have loved for Harvey to produce a tribute concert for him in the UK. While at the post memorial lunch at The Tavern On The Green restaurant in Central Park, Harvey started to discuss the idea with his table that included; Eric Clapton, Robbie Robertson, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The concert would stage all the huge UK names signed by Ahmet to Atlantic. Immediately Eric said that he would put Cream back together. At this point Harvey knew that he had a show and that it was going to happen. However the band members of Led Zeppelin, who all attended the service and lunch kept decidedly quiet. They had not performed together since their last tour in 1980, and it did not seem that they planned to do so again. It was in the following weeks that Harvey, knowing how instrumental the band were to Atlantic's success and that they had to be involved, pursued them. After sending a personal letter to each individually, he got the call to meet with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and their managers. He was bowled over when they agreed to play, but with one stipulation; they said they would only perform if they could play a whole concert, not the 30 minute slot the other acts had signed up to. This was too good to be true and was an immediate 'Done' from Harvey. On the day the concert was announced the promotion website attracted 253 million hits, the most amount of hits in any one day, in the world at that time. When the event finally went on sale, an astounding 25 million people attempted to get one of the 16,000 tickets issued. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

WW1 British Empire Medal group of four for William Taylor Motorman, comprising British Empire Medal correctly engraved, 1939/1945 Star, Atlantic Star with clasp for France and Germany and War Medal, with original letter from Central Chancery confirming authenticity of the BEM and naming, folder of original and comprehensive copy paperwork/documentation. William Taylor was an Australian seaman who joined the Merchant Navy in 1939 with Ellerman's Wilson Line of Hull. On the outbreak of war he volunteered for special duties, crewing fast blockade runners to speed through German patrols in the north sea to Sweden. Crewed by Merchant Navy volunteers and an SOE agent as Chief Officer, they carried supplies intended for the Danish resistance to Sweden and brought back vital steel ball bearings, which were in short supply at the time. The fast vessels were stripped of all unnecessary fittings and carried machine guns for defence, as well as German air and naval patrols, they faced German mines laid along their routes. The operations were planned in strict secrecy as the Swedes had to maintain neutrality, but after one earlier operation Hitler was so angry that he threatened the Swedes with invasion. Taylor's records show that he took part in Operations 'Bridford' and 'Moonshine', serving on the Nonsuch, then Hopewell and finally the Gay Corsair, all blockade runners. The Daily Mail 18 July 1944 reported "Hull Men in Fast Ships Smash the German Blockade." His British Empire Medal was Gazetted 17 July 1945: "For gallantry and initiative in hazardous circumstance: William Taylor Motorman."

Original vintage music advertising poster for a concert by Buffalo Springfield at the Avalon Ballroom in 1966. Supporting acts featured The Daily Flash and Congress of Wonders. The event was organised by Family Dog Productions. The Avalon Ballroom was a music venue in the Polk Gulch neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The space operated from 1966 to 1969, at the height of the counterculture movement. Buffalo Springfield was a Canadian-American rock band active from 1966 to 1968 whose most prominent members were Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Richie Furay. The group released three albums and several singles, including "For What It's Worth". The band combined elements of folk and country music with British invasion and psychedelic-rock influences, and, along with the Byrds, were part of the early development of folk-rock. With a name taken from a brand of steamroller, Buffalo Springfield formed in Los Angeles in 1966 with Stills (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Dewey Martin (drums, vocals), Bruce Palmer (electric bass), Furay (guitar, vocals), and Young (guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals). The band signed to Atlantic Records in 1966 and released their debut single "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", which became a hit in Los Angeles. The following January, the group released the protest song "For What It's Worth", for which they are now best known. Their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again, marked their progression to psychedelia and hard rock. After various drug-related arrests and line-up changes, the group broke up in 1968. Stephen Stills went on to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash with David Crosby of the Byrds and Graham Nash of the Hollies. Neil Young launched his solo career and later joined Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969. Furay, along with Jim Messina, went on to form the country-rock band Poco. Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Printed at the Bindweed Press, San Francisco. Excellent condition. Country of issue: USA, designer: Ned Lamont, size (cm): 51x36, year of printing: 1966

For courage, aggressiveness and proficiency in frequent encounters with high performance enemy jet aircraft’ John Roy Hugh Merifield was born in March 1920, and was the son of Captain J. H. Merifield, D.S.O. of 232 Hill Lane, Southampton. Merifield was educated at King Edward VI School, Southampton, and joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1939 having cut short his studies at Oxford University (where he was a member of the Oxford University Air Squadron). He carried out initial training as a Pilot, and was posted to the School of Army Cooperation at Old Sarum in early 1940. Merifield was then posted for operational flying with 540 Squadron as part of the Photo Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) at Leuchars, and went on to complete over 160 sorties in Mosquitos. Merifield carried out reconnaissance missions to Norway, and long-range trips to German and Polish Baltic ports. He became widely regarded as one of the best Photo Reconnaissance pilots of the Second War, and took the first photograph of a V1 rocket on a launch ramp - over the Luftwaffe Test Installation, Peenemunde West, Usedom Island. This was the photograph from which Flight Officer Constance Babington-Smith, a photographic interpreter at the Allied Central Interpretation Unit, R.A.F. Medenham, confirmed the existence of the V1. She later went on to write Photographic Intelligence in World War II, Evidence in Camera, in which she relates the following: ‘It so happened that, while this search was in progress, on the morning of November 28th, 1943, a Mosquito was on its way across the North Sea from Scotland to try for “D.A.” cover of Berlin. It was a time of steady bad weather over central Europe, and a whole series of attempts to photograph Berlin had failed. The pilot was Squadron Leader John Merifield, who since Alistair Taylor went missing was quietly emerging as the steadiest and most talented of the Mosquito pilots at Leuchars. It was Merifield (when war broke out he was a nineteen-year-old undergraduate at Oxford) who in March 1942 had flown the cover of Königsberg - a landmark of great significance: for the first time the whole of northern Germany was within range. Merifield and his navigator, Flying Officer [W. N.] Whalley, approached the Berlin area from the north, but when they reached the city they realised that they would not be able to take any photographs there. The cloud was solid below them. Merifield knew, however, that it was much clearer on the Baltic coast, as they had come in that way. So he turned northwards and set course for the alternative targets that had been picked for him at briefing. There were some shipping targets at Stettin and Swinemünde, a flock of airfields, a suspected radar installation at Zinnowitz on the island of Usedom, and various other odd jobs. One after another Merifield photographed them. After Zinnowitz there was still some film left, and Merifield always made a point of using up every scrap. What targets were left? The airfield at Peenemünde. That would just about do it. Flying westwards, Merifield switched on his cameras as he reached the northern tip of Usedom, and they clicked away as he crossed the airfield. Then home! Three days later, on December 1st, while Kendall was arguing his case at the meeting in London, explaining step b...
