R.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Royal Fleet Reserve L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 2nd issue (S.S. 120428 (Ch. B. 18562) G. A. Rutter. Sto. 1 R.F.R.) a few light marks, generally very fine (7) £80-£100 --- George Arthur Rutter, was born on 17 September 1898, at Shepherds Bush, London. He attested for the Manchester Regiment and served in the 2nd/8th and 2nd/5th Battalions during the Great War, before transferring to the Royal Navy as an Acting Stoker First Class, H.M.S. Pembroke II, on 28 April 1919. He subsequently served in H.M.S. Erebus, being confirmed in his rate on 4 October 1920, and then in H.M.S. Titania and H.M.S. Pembroke II. He was discharged on 27 April 1924, time expired, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in June 1936. A note on his Royal Navy service records indicates that he could not count prior military service, due to his conduct being recorded as only inferior to very good. Curiously he also appears on the Royal Navy medal rolls for the British War Medal and Victory Medal, despite having only commenced naval service in April 1919.

1995 Lincoln Town Car Auto LHDMake: Lincoln Model: Town CarYear: 1995Mileage: 0VIN: 1LNLM81W5SY740498Configuration: Left Hand DriveRegistration: M109BNOTransmission: automatic Lincoln's Town Car was a luxury saloon range built from 1981 to 2011 by Ford's prestige US arm, running to three generations over 30 model years. As such, the Town Car served as Ford's flagship model, intended to compete with GM's Cadillacs. This second generation 4.6-litre example was first registered in the USA in 1995, but came to the UK in 2006, being registered here in June of that year. The mileage is recorded as 129,088 by the digital odometer, and the car is MoT'd until October 2022. The V5C records one former registered keeper since the vehicle came to Britain. Included in the paperwork file are the current V5C plus some past ones, along with MoT certifcates from 2006 to, 2017 and 2019 to 2021. There's also a large stack of UK invoices from 2006, showing lots of money spent and care lavished. The most recent bill is for a new battery fitted in June 2021. The only bit of paperwork from the car's life over the other side of the Atlantic is the registration document from Virginia, USA. Also in the folder is an original sales brochure, owner's manual, warranty information booklet and service booklet (albeit unmarked) plus a Chilton (the US arm of Haynes) workshop manual.

Four: Petty Officer Cook H. E. Arnold, Royal Navy, who was serving aboard H.M.S. Broke from August 1916, taking part in the celebrated ‘Swift and Broke’ action of April 1917 1914-15 Star (M.3084, E. H. Arnold. Ck. Mte., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (M.3084 E. H. Arnold. L. Ck. Mte. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 2nd issue, fixed suspension (M.3084 E. H. Arnold. L. Ck. H.M.S. Lucia.) note initials ‘E. H.’ on all medals, mounted for wearing, contact marks, nearly very fine (4) £180-£220 --- Harry Edwin Arnold was born in Portsmouth on 6 July 1891, and enlisted into the Royal Navy as an Officer’s Steward 3rd Class on 28 May 1910, with number L.1914. In the following year he changed his naval trade to that of ‘cook’, engaging for 12 years’ service and being allocated a new number, M.3084. His service record has been amended from ‘Edwin Harry Arnold’ to read ‘Harry Edwin Arnold’ at some point after the issue of his medals. Over the following years he served at Portsmouth naval base and in the battleship Renown. Upon the outbreak of war he was serving in the cruiser Sappho on patrol duties off the Orkney and Shetland Islands. In August 1916 he was drafted into the Blake depot ship of the 11th Destroyer Flotilla, and assigned to the Broke, which had recently completed repairs to severe damage received at the battle of Jutland. On the night of 20 April 1917, six German destroyers left their bases on the Flanders coast and made a raid on Dover. At 0045 the destroyers H.M.S. Swift and Broke, just east of the Goodwins, sighted ships approaching on an opposite course. The Germans opened fire, and scored several hits on Swift. Swift turned to ram but missed, passed through the German line and scored some hits too. She then fired a torpedo which hit G.85. Swift had been sorely hit, had wireless out of action, damage to bridge and 4 ft of water in the stokers mess-deck, 1 crew killed and 4 wounded. She turned to follow the Germans but couldn't keep up, so made her way home. At the start of the fight Broke also opened fire with guns and torpedo, but failed to score. She then rammed G.42 amidships at 27 kts. Locked together, Broke's sailors had to repel German borders in hand to hand fighting while Broke's guns poured fire into G.42 at point blank range. While this battle was going on the last two German torpedo boats in the line sailed past and fired into Broke. Broke managed to break clear of G.42 and started limping eastwards after Swift. Broke had suffered damage to her boiler rooms with steam dropping, half of the bridge was on fire and the decks had been swept by gunfire. As she sailed away both G.85 and G.42 fired on Broke. Broke then turned back and fired on both German destroyers, silencing their guns. The battle ended at 0115. Both German destroyers sank shortly after. At this point Broke's engines stopped and she drifted until taken under tow by H.M.S. Lydiard, who along with H.M.S. Mentor and Lucifer had come out of Dover to help, but arrived too late. In April 1919 Arnold was drafted to the Theseus, depot ship at Batum Georgia, on the eastern shores of the Black Sea. From Batum there was a railway line across the Caucasus to Baku on the Caspian Sea, where a Royal Navy contingent manned a motley collection of requisitioned merchant ships in a confrontation with Bolshevik forces. The log of Theseus for that period records the despatch of men and stores to the Caspian and taking custody of prisoners. Arnold went on to serve in the minesweepers Heliotrope, Tring and Newark, and ashore at Portsmouth and Portland. In January 1925 he joined Lucia, depot ship of the 2nd Submarine Flotilla, attached to the Atlantic Fleet. In August of that year he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal. This was followed by service at Vernon where he was advanced to Petty Officer Cook. Arnold then signed an agreement to serve in New Zealand for three years from 28 August 1928, and was initially assigned to the destroyer Diomede. In November 1928 he went ashore to Philomel at Devonport, Auckland, and in May 1930 he was drafted to the destroyer Dunedin. This ship assisted in the suppression of the Mau rebellion in Samoa, and in February 1931 provided relief to the devastated towns of Napier and Hastings in Hawkes Bay after being struck by an earthquake. He returned to England in 1931, and was drafted to the gunnery training establishment Excellent for the final months of his service, before retiring in May 1932. Arnold was recalled to service in December 1939, and in 1940 was serving in Collingwood, a training establishment for special reservists at Fareham. He was released from service in September 1945, and died in July 1979. Sold with copied record of service and detailed resumé of his career.

1954 Austin-Healey 100 RoadsterRegistration no. Not UK RegisteredChassis no. BN1L/157601Odometer reading: 2,145MOT: Exempt *Triumph TR4 engine and gearbox*An older restoration*Imported into the UK earlier this yearDonald Healey's stylish Austin-Healey 100 caused a sensation when it debuted at the 1952 London Motor Show. Intended as a low-cost high-performance sports car and aimed at the US market, which took almost 100% of production initially, the Austin-Healey 100 sourced its major components from the Austin Atlantic saloon. Low-revving and torquey, the latter's 2,660cc four-cylinder engine produced an unremarkable 90bhp but when installed in the lighter and more streamlined Healey the result was a genuine 100mph-plus car capable of reaching 60mph in under 11 seconds. A three-speed gearbox equipped with overdrive on the top two ratios was an unusual feature of the original BN1, which was superseded by the short-lived, conventional four-speed BN2 for 1956. In 1953 a team of drivers including Donald Healey and George Eyston set a host of international and AMA speed records at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats driving two Healey 100s. Highlights including a maximum speed of 143.626mph and 1,000 kilometres at an average of 127.00mph achieved by the tuned car and 24 hours at an average of 104.3mph set by the AMA-selected 'off-the-showroom-floor' example. A muscular sports car to delight the purist, the 100 was not bettered by its six-cylinder successors in terms of outright performance until the introduction of the Austin-Healey 3000 in 1959. The vendor purchased this Austin-Healey 100 from a friend in the Lebanon. An older restoration, the Healey has at some time been fitted with a 2.1-litre Triumph TR4 engine and gearbox. The car was imported into the UK earlier this year and is running and driving well, how ever the gearbox is noisy.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 62/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The ex-David Shale, Tony Lanfranchi, Arthur Carter1955 Austin-Healey 100S Sports-Racing Two-SeaterRegistration no. EVV 106Chassis no. AHS 3509•One of only four UK-supplied examples•Extensive in-period competition history•Extensively documented from new•Part of the Arthur Carter Collection for 42 years•Present ownership since 2014Footnotes:'The prime motive of all our competition motoring was to generate publicity that would increase sales of the production model, the '100'... We were under pressure from distributors, particularly in America, to build specially prepared cars to meet demands from customers.' – Geoffrey Healey, The Healey Story. Thus was born the fabled 100S, one of the rarest and most highly sought after of all Austin-Healey sports cars. Donald Healey's stylish Austin-Healey 100 had caused a sensation when it debuted at the 1952 London Motor Show. Intended as a low-cost, high-performance, limited production sports car and aimed at the US market, which took almost 100% of production initially, the Austin-Healey 100 sourced its major components from the Austin Atlantic saloon. In fact, the car first appeared at Earls Court badged as a 'Healey Hundred' and was re-badged 'Austin-Healey' while still on its stand after Austin boss Leonard Lord bought the rights to the design. It was just as well that he did, for Healey would take over 3,000 orders during the Show yet his company had never made more than 200 cars in a single year!Lord had been happy to agree to supply Austin Atlantic components as the model had not been selling well in its intended market - the USA - and was scheduled for deletion. Low-revving and torquey, the Atlantic's 2,660cc four-cylinder engine produced an unremarkable 90bhp but when installed in the lighter and more streamlined Healey the result was a genuine 100mph-plus car capable of reaching 60mph in under 11 seconds. The project that would culminate in the 100S model began in 1953 when the factory began preparing the Austin-Healey 100 for competition. Dunlop disc brakes were one of the first important upgrades, followed in 1954 by the adoption of a Weslake-designed, 'single-port', aluminium cylinder head. Instead of the three-speed overdrive gearbox of the standard production model, the 100S was fitted with the new C-series four-speed unit. Healey's body suppliers, Jensen, built the 100S bodies in aluminium, the slightly different frontal treatment with its smaller oval radiator intake having been arrived at during development. There was no weather equipment, merely a low Perspex windscreen, while another of the model's distinctive features was its seats with their vertically slotted backs. A 20-gallon fuel tank filled the boot. Weighing 2,960lb (891kg) and with a claimed 132bhp on tap from its tuned engine, the 100S was good for a top speed of around 130mph (210km/h). When a prototype driven by Lance Macklin and George Huntoon finished an excellent 3rd overall at the Sebring 12-Hour Race in March 1954, it seemed only logical that the competition version should be called the 100S. The new car was premiered at the London Motor Show in October 1954 with deliveries commencing in February '55. Austin-Healey's contemporary advertising made much of the recent successful speed record attempt at Bonneville, Utah where a prototype had run for 24 hours, averaging 132.2mph. Excluding prototypes and 'Special Test Cars' to 100S specification, only 55 production versions were made, all being completed during 1955 and all with right-hand drive, most of which were despatched new to the USA. At most only 38 are believed to survive today.During the 1950s the Austin-Healey 100S was most accessible, most appealing and in many cases the most successful club-racing car available to any aspiring racing driver. This particularly appealing, and highly successful in period, Austin-Healey 100S is a shining example of the type. It has an outstanding record as a club-racing contender over a seven-year period from 1955 to 1962. 'EVV 106' was distinguished almost from new by two distinctive features. Firstly – as required by first owner David Shale – the car was equipped with an Aston Martin gearbox during production. And within days of its delivery to David Shale in February 1955 he had its paintwork changed from the standard Old English White over Lobelia Blue to British Racing Green, a colour that it wears to this day. The car was first UK road registered on 2nd March 1955, and evidence of its early paint change survives in a photograph of the car taken at one of its maiden outings in Mr Shale's hands, at the British Empire Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1955.From 1955 to the present day, 'EVV 106' has had only seven owners: David Shale (1955-57), Mike Kellett (1957-58), the future multiple British club-racing champion Tony Lanfranchi (1958-1960), and the last of its great club-racing owners Derek Buller-Sinfield (1961-62). The retired warhorse was then acquired by Norfolk farmer-cum-noted Austin-Healey collector Arthur Carter, in whose hands it was preserved and maintained for the following 42 years, before being acquired by the immediately preceding owner in 2004. Furthermore, 'EVV 106' is one of only four 100S models originally sold and raced in the UK home market, and has the distinction of being domiciled in the UK since new.David Shale drove the car in its club racing debut outing at Goodwood Motor Circuit on 26th March 1955, finishing 2nd, and on 30th May 1956 took a 3rd place at the short-lived Davidstow aerodrome circuit in Cornwall. After failing to finish in the higher-level British Empire Trophy race meeting in April, he recorded four fine race wins, the first at Aintree and subsequently three at Silverstone. Never averse to compiling many road miles on the way to (and from) club race meetings around the British mainland he also achieved 2nd-place finishes at Brands Hatch in Kent, Mallory Park in Leicestershire, Snetterton in Norfolk and Davidstow. He also added a 3rd place at Brands Hatch and two more at Silverstone to the car's growing list of club race laurels. David Shale finished the season as runner-up in the 1956 Autosport Championship. The car was then acquired by second owner Mike Kellett, in whose hands a 2nd place was achieved at Croft in September 1957 and a 3rd at Marston Moor, followed in 1958 by 2nd and 4th-place results at Full Sutton, the very fast Yorkshire aerodrome circuit. Overall, it was raced at least 18 times in his ownership and remained a competitive contender against newer opposition.Tony Lanfranchi, from Huddersfield, then acquired the car and learned much about his chosen sport in it before going on to become one of the most colourful characters of the British and international motor racing scene. In 'EVV 106' he won the 1959 Catterick hill-climb, and 3rd places in the Burton Sprint and at the Mallory Park circuit. Derek Buller-Sinfield continued the Healey's regular competition career into 1962, at which time it was acquired as one of the foun... For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 164

Three Second World War Diaries belonging to a Royal Air Force casualty, the details of the owner are a little vague giving only name and rank but by cross referencing entries in the diaries with 'Commonwealth War Graves Commission' and marriage records we were able to ascertain that they belonged to Pilot Officer Eric Moore, of 59 Squadron, the diaries cover 14th - 29th January 1940, 5th December -  16th December 1940, and 3rd January - 30th January 1941, there must have been other diaries written by Eric Moore but these three give a fascinating insight into the feelings of an RAF Bomber crew member in the dark days after Dunkirk, the hand written detailed daily entries reveal his fears, hopes and aspirations for the future, obvious dedication to his wife, and reflections on how the war will develop, there are entries on raids on French ports (a long way from the 1000 bomber raids of the later years) detailing the routes out and back, anti aircraft fire and results, not always positive, relief at raids being cancelled, and frustration when, due to weather conditions, they can't make any at all, aircraft accidents, and deaths of friends and colleagues, he details his thoughts and regrets on the prospect of his own death in action, he describes everyday life in between operations, lectures, training, drinks in the mess, some riotous!, he mentions many other air crew by name and his interactions with them, critical of some, periods of leave with Elsie, his wife, visits to the local town, Emsworth, from R.A.F. Thorney Island where he was based, he is clearly very enthusiastic about cars and describes in detail his own experience buying and, unfortunately, repairing his own, the third diary, covering January, is where he is at his most reflective, possibly because the weather is so bad he is able to take part in only one raid,  the reading of the diaries is a poignant experience because 79752 Pilot Officer Eric Moore, Observer, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve was Killed in Action on the 22nd March 1941 with P/O Date (pilot) and Sgt. Watkins (Air Gunner), when his Bleheim IV Bomber aircraft, T2433, squadron code TR-X, was shot down off Katwijk by a Me109 Fighter of JG1 flown by Oberleutnant Paul Stolte, the beginning of each of the three diary's states that it should be given to his wife Elsie, gives the address where his last Will and Testament is held and that 'In it I leave everything that I possess to my wife', photos of Eric Moore can be seen on the number 59 Squadron website which also mentions his relationship with other aircrew which is detailed in the diaries, some entries are detailed below to give an indication of contents. Monday 14th October 1940: '..again detailed for L'Orient this evening, I don't feel half so jittery now when I hear such news, I think we had the worst we're likely to get on our last show..', 17/10/40: raid on Brest, describes take off, flight to target, weather condition, FLAK and bomb run, '..then, after a few seconds I let the two incendiaries off too. Running South over the town I caught a glimpse of the river which I recognised, had Mac turn 180 degrees and picking up a series of long roofs let go my stick of bombs. Beams promptly picked us up and evasive tactics prevented us seeing the results of our bombs..Mac twisted and turned making his manoeuvres more violent..he over shot the angle and and looking through the cabin roof I saw the searchlights pointed up at us, we were upside down!..I shall never understand how we failed to get hit..', 29/10/40: description of new bomb designed to set alight oil which had flowed onto water from tanks burst by Bomber Command, very crude and amateurish, deployed by hand!, 5/12/40 continued description of raid on L'Orient, disagreement with pilot over prospective factory targets, '..Mac replies 'We are sent to bomb L'Orient not a French factory making tits for babies milk bottles' quoth he..', thoughts on being killed in action, on return discovers that the 'Mickey Mouse' was unconnected to the circuit (again) so bombs still on board!, '..attended funeral of Heinman who crashed last Sunday morning..' description of funeral and grief of relatives, description of Dining in night in Officers Mess, 7/12/40: depression at thought of another week of flights, missing Elsie, description of aircraft from 53 Sqn crashing into trees on landing in poor weather, pilot, Weatherby, and Observer killed, 8/12/40: told by Flight Commander Ropy Palmer he is flying with him on raid as he is testing the Observers, Moore concerned he is under specific observation (correct), description of raid on L'Orient, gunner reports guns jammed and belly gun firing only single shots and front gun not working!, requests change of pilot and finds out he had already been complained about hence the 'test' by Palmer who declares his confidence in Moore, promises to see what he can do, 12/12/40: description of raid on Brest, heavy Flak, HMS Queen Elizabeth with destroyer screen leaves Portsmouth, no radio contact only signal lights to avoid discovery by enemy, 16/12/40: photo recce mission with Wing Commander to German aerodrome on Guernsey, spot two Dornier 18 Flying boats and a convoy of 5 ships, 4/1/41: '..a day full of tension and excitement..', description of scene at Thorney Island as Blenheims from 53 & 59 Squadrons are detailed to bomb a Hipper Class cruiser  (actually the Hipper herself) in a raid on Brest, Moore not detailed as on standby but describes excitement, apprehension, and in some, depression, at having to attack in daylight, describes damage to one of returned aircraft '..completely riddled yet none of the crew touched!..', 5/4/41: description of aircraft from 'A' and 'B' Flights 59 Sqn sent on another daylight raid on Brest, as given by colleagues, 10/12/40: description of loss of aircraft and crew when their TR91 radio packed up and they couldn't receive bearings to get back from a raid, believed to have crashed into Atlantic, '..another crew joined the limbo of those whose bones strew the floor of the sea bottom around these shores..', 16/1/41: 24 hrs leave with Elsie, '..hopes for our Junior were unfounded this time..have decided to wait until May before trying again. By that time the invasion attempt should be made &, I hope, frustrated. In effect, the war should be well on the way to victory for us by mid summer..', 17/1/41: description of attack on a German convoy by 6 aircraft of 59 Sqn, McCurdy's aircraft hit by a shell, '..he was damned lucky to get away with it..', 19/1/41: fed up with continuous grounding due to wet weather, criticism of some for 'wrong spirit', 21/1/40: walks into Emsworth and discovers church down side road, goes in and sits alone, very reflective, very sombre

Lot 37

Registration No: DLW 654Chassis No: B191HMMOT: ExemptSupplied new to Miss Durand of London and more recently part of a large, private collection for three decadesThe subject of a chassis-up, bare metal, photographically documented restoration during the early 1990sStructurally very sound, cosmetically imperfect and in need of further mechanical recommissioning (c.£7,700 spent in 2019-20)Originally ordered by Jack Barclay Ltd of Mayfair for stock, chassis B191HM was supplied new to Miss Durand of Kensington & Chelsea. The work of esteemed firm Vanden Plas, its decidedly elegant, Pillarless Sports Saloon coachwork (body number 3503) cost some £395 alone. Intended for ‘town work and touring’, the Bentley was specified with a sunroof, Philco car radio, slightly angled gear and handbrake levers and louvres that extended from the bonnet into the scuttle. Miss Durand’s custodianship was comparatively fleeting but Jack Barclay Ltd certainly developed an affinity for the car re-selling it in 1938 and 1947 (copies of the showroom blurb on each occasion remain on file). Having bought ‘DLW 654’ when it was twenty months old, Ernest Thornton-Smith Esq. of Queen Anne’s Gate, SW1 (and later Soho Square) covered a substantial mileage during his nine-year tenure increasing the odometer reading from 15,000 to over 100,000 miles. Such extensive usage during World War Two whilst petrol was heavily rationed suggests that Mr Thornton-Smith either played an important role during the conflict or lent his car to the armed forces. Interestingly, he was a master of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners as well as a renowned antique dealer and interior designer (the Thornton-Smith Co operated on both sides of the Atlantic).Fitted with an exchange cylinder block in 1939, the Bentley had also been repainted from Steel Dust Metallic to Black (perhaps due to wartime duties?) by the time that J.B. Upton Esq of Rolston Hall, Yorkshire acquired it from Jack Barclay Ltd eight years later. Off the road for sometime (or possibly abroad), chassis B191HM was re-registered with the DVLA during 1979. Treated to a photographically documented, bare metal, chassis-up restoration in the early 1990s at a reputed cost of £60,000 by then owner Derek Saunders Esq of Blunham, the Pillarless Sports Saloon subsequently spent twenty-three years as part of a private collection. Stored indoors but with a haphazard cover for most of that time, its Garnet paintwork has suffered accordingly. Two accompanying MOT certificates dating back to the mid-1990s suggest that ‘DLW 654’ may have covered less than 1,000 miles since its restoration. Little used for decades, the car was treated to some £7,700 worth of recommissioning in 2019-2020 by Trevor Farrington of Knutsford which comprised: freeing up the braking system, refurbishing the ignition system and fitting a new battery, rejuvenating the fuel system including cleaning/sealing the tank and fitting a new fuel pump, replacing a broken valve spring and resetting all tappets, cleaning and machine polishing the bodywork and chrome-work, and greasing and checking the underside. The Bentley runs and drives with the engine reportedly showing good compression and the cylinder head appearing sound. However, the straight-six is not as smooth or quiet as it should be and would thus benefit from further attention. The front brakes are currently disconnected due to the brake shafts being seized. On the plus side, the wooden body frame seems particularly sound with the doors all opening and closing easily (a notorious weak point on Pillarless cars) and the interior trim remains highly presentable. A very worthwhile project which would doubtless still cut a dash in Mayfair traffic, this desirable Vanden-Plas bodied Derby Bentley is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, RREC copy chassis records, restoration photos and sundry other paperwork.Footnote: For more information, please contact:Damian Jonesdamian.jones@handh.co.uk07855 493737

1972 Jaguar E-Type SIII 5.3 V12 Manual CoupeMake: JaguarModel: E-Type Year: 1972Mileage: 0VIN: UD1S74017BWConfiguration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: JSL722L Transmission: manual Like so many Jaguar E-types, this V12 coupe headed over the Atlantic after it was built in 1972, to be sold as a new car in the United States. And, again like so many British sports cars, it eventually returned back to the UK, coming back to these shores in April 1996. One of the previous owners records in the paperwork that 'by that time, it was right-hand drive, manual, and finished in British Racing Green with Magnolia interior', having started life as a silver automatic with black interior. However, the date of the change to RHD and manual gearbox can't be confirmed from the paperwork. In 1998, it was stripped down and bodily restored, along with an engine rebuild, at which point the speedometer was zeroed. By its MoT of September 2001, it was recorded as having covered just 137 miles. In the paperwork file is the V5 and copies of previous V5s, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate - showing the car began life as a silver Series III automatic with black interior - and bills from the late 1990s onwards. These show the fitment of polyurethane front bushing during 2006, and another complete engine rebuild with new parts plus gearbox work in 2008 at a cost of close to £10,000 (at 6110 miles). There are also assorted pictures and MoTs dating back to 2001, along with sundry paperwork and a spare set of keys. Most useful to any new owner is a printed email from a previous owner detailing all the work done on the Jaguar from 1996 through to 2015, when the recorded mileage was 9940. The odometer currently reads 13,058. The E-type is in very good overall condition, with just some minor age-related wear to the cream leather interior, which would presumably have been re-done during the car's US days. Lot 230

A Great War D.S.M. awarded to Engine Room Artificer J. N. Reed, Royal Naval Reserve, for services aboard the destroyer Moresby when she and her sister ship Michael sank the German submarine U-110 in the North West Approaches on 15 March 1918 Distinguished Service Medal, G.V.R. (EA.1163. J. N. Reed, E.R.A. R.N.R. “Moresby” Atlantic. 15. Mch. 1918) nearly very fine £700-£900 --- D.S.M. London Gazette 14 September 1918: ‘For services in action with enemy submarines.’ James Nesbit Reed was born at Newcastle on Tyne on 18 December 1889. He enrolled in the R.N.R. as an Engine Room Artificer on 31 August 1914, and after service in Woolwich and Druid, was transferred, on 28 April 1916, to the newly built destroyer H.M.S. Moresby in which he was soon engaged at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. At Jutland, Moresby screened the First Battle Cruiser Squadron as one of twelve destroyers operating with the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla and was successful in sinking the German destroyer V. 4 by torpedo. Remaining in Moresby until the conclusion of the war, Reed was present in her on 15 March 1918, at the sinking of U-110, a type 93 U-boat which had among its list of 10 previous victims, the celebrated Q-Ship H.M.S. Penshurst. When found north-west of Malin Head by Moresby and another destroyer H.M.S. Michael, she had just torpedoed and sunk the 10,000 tonne British ocean liner Amazon and was promptly sent to the bottom by depth charges from the British destroyers with the loss of 39 men. All of Amazon’s passengers and 9 surviving crew members from U-110 were rescued by Moresby. Sold with copied service records and other research which confirm entitlement to 1914-15 Star trio and R.N.R. L.S. & G.C., this last awarded on 22 February 1930.
