"We are getting a new C.O., it is 'Bruin' Purvis. He is the best pilot in the R.A.F."* The scarce experimental flying Distinguished Flying Cross, and Double Air Force Cross to Group Captain Harry Alexander Purvis R.A.F.: D.F.C., for mine destruction, reverse dated 1940, cased (LG: 20/02/1940); A.F.C., reverse dated 1940, cased (LG: 11/07/1940); Bar to A.F.C., on separate piece of ribbon (LG: 02/06/1943); Coronation Medal 1953, boxed; mounted miniature group comprising: D.F.C.. A.F.C. and Bar, 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star with Air Crew Europe Bar, Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal with oak leaf, Coronation Medal 1953; Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators Award of Merit, award for 1960-61, reverse inscribed (H.A. PURVIS/ UPPER FREEMAN), cased; the recipient's flying logbooks (10) from 23rd September 1924 to 14th April 1965; his commission a uniform tunic, ribbon bar, RAF wings and ID tags; and a good quantity of associated biographical material, lists of aircraft, photographs including studies of various aircraft types. Offered with copy research. All medals extremely fine. The vital and sometimes overlooked contribution of test pilots to the 1939-45 war effort is well illustrated by the superb combination of a Distinguished Flying Cross with an Air Force Cross and Bar awarded to Squadron Leader (later Group Captain) Harry Alexander Purvis R.A.F. Accompanied by the recipient's flying log books and his dress miniature medals, they represent part of the career of an extraordinarily courageous and skilful aviator. The A.F.C. was, of course, the natural reward for those fearless individuals who risked injury and death in the effort to develop vital aerial weaponry, in an era when the boundaries of aviation technology were being advanced with hazardous rapidity. Purvis was at the forefront of this work, and became one of only 26 men** in this period to be awarded the A.F.C. not once, but twice, as denoted by the bar. It is further testament to the breadth of his wartime service that he was also awarded the D.F.C. - the reward for bravery whilst flying on active operations against the enemy. In late 1939 the RAF developed an aerial countermeasure to Nazi Germany's magnetic influence sea mines, which posed a grave risk to our vital sea lanes. A Vickers Wellington (P2518) was fitted with a huge balsa wood hoop that housed a powerful electromagnetic coil. The intention was to fly low over the sea, so that the downward pointing magnetic field would detonate the mines lurking beneath the waves. 'Bruin' Purvis, having tested the functional capabilities of this unconventional aircraft, then took the further - and extremely hazardous - step of trialling its mine destroying ability in January 1940. The Operations Record Book for No.1 G.R. Unit, R.A.F. Manston, records that a mine was successfully destroyed on the 8th or 9th of that month and notes that 'Aircraft's Height was 25-30 feet'. Neither the possibility that the huge upsurge of water resulting from the explosion might bring the aircraft down, nor the interference of the enemy in later trials, were any deterrent to this steely nerved man. His remarkable story also includes the testing of prototype Spitfires, and in May 1942 he was posted to the Aeroplane and Aeronautical Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) at Boscombe down in Wiltshire. We are reminded of the dangerous nature of his work by the fact that his predecessor had been killed in a crash, and that "there had been so many fatal accidents…. that there was a need for a great personality to revive the general spirits of the comparatively inexperienced survivors."*** Bruin Purvis, described at the time by Lieutenant Commander Denis Campbell F.A.A. (himself an operational and test pilot of great stature) as 'the best pilot in the R.A.F.', was just such a personality. Whilst testing the new Lancaster Mk VI in 1944, he suffered an engine fault that forced him to crash land. With consummate skill he avoided the destruction of life and property in the land below him, and preserved the lives of his crew, before strolling to his home (coincidentally nearby) and announcing to his wife "I was in Amesbury so I thought I would pop in for a cup of tea." **** * Lieutenant Commander Denis Cambell quoted in 'Men with Wings' by Wing Commander H.P. 'Sandy' Powell A.F.C., A.F.R.Ae.S. ** Abbott & Tamplin, 'British Gallantry Awards' *** Wing Commander H.P. 'Sandy' Powell, 'Men With Wings' **** Derek Collier Webb, 'Bruin Purvis, Test Pilot Extraordinary'

Of Presidential Interest (at that time Grover Cleveland was President): A late 19th century American silver presentation vase. The base incuse stamped "Moore & Leding, Designers & Makers, Washington DC" above "Sterling Silver 925-1000 fine", c1895. Baluster form with slender neck, the lower section finely chased with a scene depicting a ship in distress with a rescue ship in the background, within a surround of scrolls, cast handles formed as the American Eagle atop the shield on the Great Seal of the United States. Rim of vase applied with 13 star motifs and engraved with the following inscription: "From The President of the United States to Captain Amos Hawkett of The British Steamship, Queensmore, in recognition of his humane services in effecting the rescue of the crews of the American schooners, ALMA CUMMINGS and MARION F SPRAGUE, February 12th and 13th, 1895"; together with a newspaper article recording the gallant efforts of Captain Amos Hawkett's attempt in rescuing the crews of The Alma Cummings and The Queensmore. For his bravery, Hawkett was given a vase, a watch and a banquet at Gordon's on Gay Street (possibly Gordon's Wine Bar, London?). Also in the article, the journalist records the watch as "a singularly handsome piece of jewelery (sic) and it bears an inscription on its case denoting the reason for the presentation. It cost over $200." It is interesting to note that this particular watch appeared in auction, Cape Town, in 2013. Footnote: 1. Manufactures:- Moore & Leding are better known for their production and sales of American souvenir spoons. Given this, it is possible that they bought this vase from one of the leading New York silversmithing companies, probably Tiffany or Gorham. 2. The Steamship Company:- This was the second steamship to be named The Queensmore, (the first caught fire on her maiden voyage in 1889 and was put into Dunmanus Bay, Ireland and abandoned). The second, the one mentioned in this rescue, was sold in 1896 to the Elder Dempster Line by the Johnston Line. The latter company was formed prior to 1872 by William and Edmund Johnston. Their first steamer was purchased in 1872 and traded with countries in the Black Sea, as well as Greece and Turkey. The Johnston brothers formed and amalgamated with a number of other shipping companies, notably the St Andrews Steam Shipping Company, in 1876, and the Atlantic Services in 1880. This was in conjunction with The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, who specialised in the transport in live cattle. From this collaboration, it resulted in a direct shipping trade route between Boston and London. 3. The President of the United States in 1896:- Stephen Grover Cleveland was born on 18th March 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey and died in 1908 at the age of 71. Cleveland was a heavyweight in politics, as well as body mass. He was a heavy 250 pounds and known as 'Big Steve'. It was perhaps because of this he dropped his first name and adopted Grover Cleveland as his preferred name. Cleveland's early career was as a teacher at the New York Institute for The Blind before embarking on a career in Law. During his political career, his first position was Sheriff of Erie County. This was for two years from 1871-1873. Between 1873 and 1881 he returned to his practice yet after some persuasion he ran for Mayor of Buffalo. His main cause for this return was the internal corruption of the City Government and, through his campaigning, he won. Although some of the battles he fought in the political arena, whilst Mayor, were for cost cuttings, he was popular with the voters, and was acknowledged by his fellow assemblymen, Theodore Roosevelt in particular noticed Cleveland's abilities. Cleveland was a member of the Democratic Party, and is the only President to date to serve two non-consecutive terms of office, the 22nd and 24th President. The campaign before his first term (1884-1888) saw a number of scandals: on Cleveland's side a paternity suit and on his rival's side several financial scandals! The second term (1892-1896) was more quiet and restrained. However, during his tenure viz financial crisis, railroad bankruptcy and issues concerning his opposition of discrimination against Chinese immigrants in the West and, on the other hand, he did not support equality for African Americans nor voting rights for women. CONDITION REPORT: The colour is flat ,this is due to the fact that the silver has been cleaned with liquid silver dip. It has now left the vase flat in colour and patchy. Solar Transcripts', a presentation volume of 'Talbotypes' by George Wilson Bridges to Admiral Sir William Parker 'Malta 9th May 1851', the volume cover and one of the loose photographs bearing Bridges boar crest over B, each of the presented photographs inscribed in ink by Bridges who describes himself in the presentation as 'A Decayed Traveller', page 19 showing Admiral Parker aboard Hibernia and the British Fleet arriving at the Porta Reale, Palermo on 16th February 1848, three loose photographs inscribed 'Aboard Hibernia', number 40 from the album missing but accompanied by fifteen loose photographs by Bridges, three priced verso at 3/6 in ink and thus dating to about 1852, another three by Calvert Richard Jones of Malta dated 1846 at the beginning of Bridges time photgraphing in the Mediterranean (57) Other Notes: George Wilson Bridges (1788-1863) The present album of calotypes, or Talbotypes, owes itself to succession of chance occasions which befell George Wilson Bridges. In 1834, when he was Rector of the Parish of St Ann's in Jamaica, his wife left him for England taking with her a son called Henry, and to join a daughter already living there. Later that year he crossed the Atlantic to find his estranged wife and recover his daughter. He then returned to his parish with that daughter, becoming a single parent looking after four daughters and a son, William. Tragically on New Year's Day 1837, he witnessed the four daughters drown in a boating accident. He retreated to the edge of Rice Lake, Peterborough, Upper Canada, where he built Wolf Tower as a home for William and himself. From 1842, William became a lynch pin in the story, as an illness lead his father to take him to England. William subsequently went to school at Maisemore, near Gloucester where his father had become Rector. William made friends with another William attending the school who was the son of Lord Valletort, third Earl of Mount Edgcombe and his wife Caroline Augusta (nee Feilding). Lady Caroline was half sister to William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) and through that connection Bridges became intrigued by the nascent art of photography. In 1846, William joined the Royal Navy. He was to become Captain William Wilson Somerset Bridges RN (1831-1889), but as a 15 year old joined the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, the 'Hibernia', stationed off Lisbon. The father followed the son to the Mediterranean via Paris. While in Paris he acquired a camera from Charles Chevalier (1804-59). De Montford and Glasgow universities hold some twenty three letters written by Bridges to WHFT between his leaving Portsmouth on HMS Superb in 1846 and his return from the Mediterranean to Cheltenham in 1852. Most record his struggles to master Talbot's calotype process introduced to the public in 1841. Bridges was to take some 1700 photographs during this period. On arrival in Malta at some time between February and the end of March 1846, he met up with the Reverend Calvert Richard Jones who was to teach him the rudiments of photography as pioneered by William Henry Fox Talbot. Jones had officiated at the wedding of Fox Talbot's wealthy cousin, Christopher (Kit) Rice Mansel Talbot, to Lady Charlotte Butler. Bridges' first letter from Malta to Fox Talbot records the death of Lady Charlotte, passing sympathy to the family over her loss. Subsequent letters record his difficulties of transferring the calotype negatives successfully and clearly as images onto paper prior to fixing them. In April of 1846, Christopher Talbot returned to his home at Margam Castle in Wales via the toe of Italy. He played a major role in the development of ironworks, the cause of the railways to arrive in south Wales and the diversion of the river Afan to the east of Aberavon, which created a new port where transport and industry met. This port was named Port Talbot after him. Calvert Jones travelled with Talbot on his journey through Italy but left memoranda on Talbotype photography for Bridges to work from. 1846 was also quite a year for Admiral Sir William Parker Bt (1781-1866) whose flagship, Hibernia, William Bridges had joined. Sir William was briefly first Naval Lord during this year but retired, due to ill health, to his command of the Mediterranean Fleet in July of 1846. Also in 1846, he was given command of the Channel Fleet because of his knowledge of Portuguese affairs, hence Hibernia being stationed off Lisbon when both Williams joined her. William Bridges served on both Hibernia and a surveying ship called Volage during the three years after joining up in 1846. His father's watchful eye followed his peregrinations. Photographs were taken on board the Hibernia, as well as points in the Mediterranean where it and the Volage docked. The circumstances which led to the inscribed presentation volume of forty calotypes to Sir William Parker in 1851 can only be guessed at, but must relate to William Bridges' service with him. One wonders whether George Bridges gave similarly bound 'Solar Transcript's' bearing his crested B cypher but signed from a 'Decayed Traveller' to other dignitaries as well when he came across them during this period of travelling the Mediterranean. It is known that he presented photographs to King Otto of Greece and King Ferdinand II of The Two Sicilies, but were they bound and inscribed thus?
