ROBOT JOX (1989) - Alexander's (Paul Koslo) Hero Mechanical Robot Puppet - Alexander's (Paul Koslo) hero mechanical robot puppet from Stuart Gordon's Robot Jox. Confederation champion Alexander piloted his giant robot to fight against Market robot jox Achilles (Gary Graham) and Athena (Anne-Marie Johnson) after killing nine of his previous opponents that he had a distinct advantage over thanks to a Confederation spy in the Market. The film's colossal mechs, designed by conceptual designers Ron Cobb and Steve Burg in coordination with Gordon, were brought to life through a combination of stop-motion animation used for the wider shots and rod-and-cable puppets used for close-up shots of the robots in action. This hero robot is of the latter type. This puppet is constructed from resin-coated fiberglass with a metal armature interior and mechanical metal cables for operating the puppet extending out its back. It is painted black with yellow stripes and chrome-color details on its body to appear metallic. Following production, this puppet underwent sympathetic restoration to secure various loose components and remount its legs. Nonetheless, some detail pieces remain missing, the fiberglass exhibits cracked spots, and no replica components have been added. Its vibrant paintwork is all original to the production. Dimensions: 32" x 20" x 55" (81.5 cm x 51 cm x 139.75 cm)Contains electronic and mechanical components; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: $10,000 - 20,000Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday, August 15th. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Pair of Hand-Drawn Ralph McQuarrie C-3PO Leg and Torso Concept Sketches - Two C-3PO leg and torso concept sketches hand-drawn by production illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Loyal protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) accompanied Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on his quest to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the clutches of the Empire. McQuarrie, who is credited alongside Lucas for the origins of Threepio, originally based the look of the droid on the robot Maria from Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis, although the character ultimately seen on screen was both more masculine and less human-looking in the style of Gort from Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still. These early sketches, one depicting C-3PO's jointed legs in slight profile and one depicting his torso and bottom from the left side, were rendered in graphite on paper circa mid-1975. The profile sketch also appears on page 27 of the Abrams publication Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie, while the torso sketch appears on page 82. Both appear to have been torn from a larger sheet of paper and exhibit crinkling. Dimensions: (largest) 6" x 17" (15.25 cm x 43.25 cm)Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000Bidding for this lot will end on Sunday, August 18th. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Linen-Backed Full-Scale Starboard Elevation "Robot R2" Production Blueprint - A linen-backed, full-scale starboard elevation "Robot R2" blueprint from George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. This blueprint of loyal droid R2-D2 was originally drawn by draftsman Peter Childs, then printed and distributed on "The Star Wars"-branded drafting paper two months prior to filming.Originating from a 1976-era Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) crew member and labeled "Starboard Elevation Robot 'R2,'" this linen-backed blueprint identifies several components of R2's design, including the horseshoe modification and a five-inch-wide step. The DRG number is noted as "67." It is designated as the fourth of four sheets reissued by the production on January 23, 1976 to accommodate a design modification to the droid's legs. This blueprint underwent professional paper restoration to address water damage, making the stains less visible but muting down some of the original blue coloring in the process. The print has been linen-backed for stability and exhibits minor stains and wear along its edges from use. Dimensions: 33" x 51.75" (84 cm x 131.5 cm)Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday, August 15th. The auction will begin at 9:30AM PDT and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace.
