Studied at Manchester College of Art and Design and London, most notably with Iain Macnab at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Much influenced by Marc Chagall and Christopher Wood. Appeared in group exhibitions put on by Lucy Wetheim and exhibited with the Manchester Group. The circus and the landscape were leading features of her pictures. Lived latterly in Vaud, Switzerland.

Oblong folio, 30 lithographic plates including two title pages, limited to 250 copies, small neat inscription on first page, original purple felt binding with screen printed lion motif and Hebrew lettering to upper cover, covers and spine a little faded and rubbed, hinges slightly weakNote: Issachar Ryback depicts scenes from the lives of the Jewish community in his shtetl, or small town, in Ukraine, before it was destroyed by the pogroms which followed the end of the First World War. Ryback is often compared with Chagall, and illustrates many of the same subjects that Chagall studied in his early years. A copy of the book is described in an Israel Museum exhibition catalogue, Tradition and Revolution: The Jewish Renaissance in Russian Avant-Garde Art, 1912-1928, edited by Ruth Apter-Gabriel.

Il était merveilleusement tenté par cette possibilité offerte à son œuvre d’être la synthèse des formes d’art qu’il préfère : poésie, musique, peinture. Chagall possède avec la musique une longue familiarité : il peint généralement avec son accompagnement. »Le plafond de l’opéra de Paris par Marc Chagall, Jacques Lassaigne, éditions André SauretLe plafond de l’Opéra Garnier est en effet le chef d’œuvre d’une vie, la consécration que chaque artiste rêverait d’obtenir… Il ne pouvait y avoir d’œuvre plus symbolique à réaliser pour Marc Chagall.En parallèle à la musique, l’un des thèmes de prédilection de Chagall est évidemment l’amour, et son incarnation : le couple.Aussi, si l’artiste était encore en vie et qu’il était possible de lui demander un dessin, c’est évidemment un dessin de l’amour de sa vie, sur fond d’Opéra qui serait le plus beau et le plus sincère des cadeaux… C’est ce à quoi Monsieur Jacques Moatti a visiblement eu droit. En effet, on peut tout à fait imaginer en regardant le dessin qui est ici présenté, dédicacé sur une page du fameux livre cité plus haut, que Chagall a voulu lui donner la plus belle représentation de son amour.Mais puisque nous n’avons pas la chance d’être le destinataire de cette dédicace, nous pouvons nous demander : qui donc est Monsieur Moatti ?Jacques Moatti a tout simplement photographié pendant plus de vingt ans les danseurs de l’Opéra de Paris. Sa carrière est intimement liée avec le monde de la Danse et de l’Opéra. Il est d’ailleurs auteur ou co-auteur de nombreux livres de référence (tel que : « L’Opéra de Charles Garnier. Architectures et décor intérieur, Éditions du patrimoine, Paris, 2004, 192 »)Dans le dessin ici présenté, dédicacé à Monsieur et Madame, les amoureux ressemblent, dans leur position et tenues, aux « Mariés de la tour Eiffel » qui se trouve au musée national d`Art moderne, Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris. C’est pourquoi, à moins d’être aussi proche de l’artiste qu’a pu l’être le renommé photographe, il eut été peu probable d’obtenir un aussi beau dessin, sur un support aussi symbolique !
