Lhote“.Um 1920.Im cremefarbenem Passepartout, in Montparnasse-Rahmen.Inmitten einer Flusslandschaft, die nach vorn hin von Vegetation in verschiedenen Grüntönen begrenzt wird, sind zwei Schiffe unterschiedlichen Formates zu sehen, deren französische Beflaggung zu einer nationalen Feierlichkeit beitragen mögen. Wie auch die geometrisierte Vegetation im Vordergrund in unterschiedlichen Tönen schimmert und in verschiedenen Richtungen wächst, ist auch das Flussdelta seiner Dichte und seines Nährstoffreichtums gemäß, in verschiedenen Farben dargestellt, die dem Bild ein horizontal gestuftes Gepräge geben, während sich die Dampfwolken des Schaufelraddampfers in den Felsen am Horizont wiederholen.Die dunklen, rechteckigen Silhouetten der Boote scheinen auf Schienen zu gleiten. André Lhote folgt hier den kubistischen Theorien, um sein Bild zu konstruieren. Die pastellfarbene Farbpalette ist Cézanne zu verdanken, dessen glühender Bewunderer Lhote war.André Lhote (1885-1962) war ein französischer Maler und Kunsttheoretiker. Nach einer zehnjährigen Lehre in der Kunsttischlerei Courbaterre, besuchte er die Kurse für dekorative Kunst an der Kunstschule in Bordeaux bis 1904. Danach widmete er sich der Malerei, entdeckte Gauguin (1848-1903) und Cézanne (1839-1906), aber auch die afrikanische Kunst. Nach seiner Ankunft in Paris im Jahr 1907 nahm er am Salon d’Automne teil und veranstaltete 1910 seine erste Ausstellung in der Galerie Eugène Druet. Mit seinem Gemälde „Paysage français“ trat er 1912 der kubistischen Bewegung bei.Er lehnte jedoch die abstrakte Seite der Bewegung ab und blieb den romanischen Fresken und der traditionellen Kunst verbunden. Er versuchte stets, eine Verbindung zur klassischen Malerei zu bewahren. Ab 1918 unterrichtete er Malerei an verschiedenen Akademien, bis er 1925 seine eigene Akademie in Montparnasse gründete, an der viele Maler der Pariser Schule studierten, wie Hans Hartung (1904-1989) oder Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980). Im Jahr 1919 wird er Kunstkritiker in der Nouvelle Revue française. In der Zeit von 1920 bis 1930 war Lhote sehr aktiv und nahm an zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Frankreich und im Ausland teil.Als wichtiger Initiator von Reflexionen über die Entwicklung der Kunst beteiligte er sich an den großen Polemiken der Kunstszene der Zwischenkriegszeit. Er verfasste u.a. die „Traité du paysage“ (1939) und „Traité de la figure“ (1950). Lhote organisierte auch ab 1926 Sommerkurse für seine Schüler in seinem Haus in Mirmande in der Drôme. 1938 kaufte er in Gordes ein Haus, in dem während der Besatzung viele Künstler Zuflucht fanden, darunter auch Marc Chagall (1887-1985). 1958 ist das Jahr der großen Retrospektive seines Werks im Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, gefolgt von einer zweijährigen retrospektiven Ausstellung in der Juster Gallery in New York. Jhs., dessen Anfänge im Fauvismus lagen und der später zu einer unverwechselbar lyrisch-modernen Ausdrucksform fand. C. besuchte in St. Petersburg private Malschulen, nachdem seine Aufnahme an der Akademie gescheitert war. Mit Hilfe eines Stipendiums konnte er 1910 nach Paris übersiedeln, wo er bald Anschluss an die avantgardistische Kunstszene fand und an den maßgeblichen Ausstellungen teilnehmen konnte. Während eines Russlandbesuchs brach der erste Weltkrieg aus und verhindete C.s Rückreise nach Paris. Er konnte sich als Kulturfunktionär der Revolution nicht gegen Malewitsch durchsetzen und kehrte nach Station in Berlin nach Frankreich zurück. Die Judenverfolgung zwang ihn 1941-48 ins New Yorker Exil, wo er mit einer Retrospektive im MoMA gewürdigt wurde. Zurück in Frankreich stellte er in vielen bedeutenden europäischen Museen sowie auf der Documenta aus und erhielt wichtige öffentliche Aufträge. Pencil signed and dated along the lower right; numbered 103/150 along the lower left.Lot Essay:Born in Hanoi in 1908 to a well-to-do family, Vu Cao Dam displayed an early interest in the arts. His father, a well-educated Catholic, brought him up in a home surrounded by traditional Chinese calligraphy and a wide range of cultural influences. In 1926, he began his formal artistic education at the painter Victor Tardieu’s École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. Tardieu and his instructors taught academic European painting to his students as well as decoration, architecture, anatomy, and sculpture. It was at sculpture that young Vu Cao Dam most excelled, and he joined the newly minted sculpture program at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he created several bronze busts that won him early acclaim.In 1931, following his graduation from the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, Vu Cao Dam received a scholarship to continue his art education in Paris. He began his Parisian studies at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. During his first year there, Vu Cao Dam received the prestigious honor of an invitation to display his works in the Exposition Coloniale Internationale. He then continued his studies at the École du Louvre, where he was able to view the works of the great European academic masters he had been trained to emulate. However, he was most compelled by more recent works of the impressionists and post-impressionists, as well as great sculptors such as Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti.Vu Cao Dam’s career took off following the completion of his education. He and fellow Vietnamese expatriate Le Pho, a dear friend with whom he had studied in Hanoi, found success and popularity on the Paris art scene. Vu Cao Dam began sculpting what would become his most famous subject matter: elegant Vietnamese ladies. He continued to paint as well as sculpting, often painting on silk, a form of painting taught at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine. He also began to put down personal roots in France, marrying and having two children.When World War II broke out, Paris became a dangerous place to live and work; Vu Cao Dam sent his family to the countryside to escape the Nazi-occupied city. However, he stayed in Paris, frantically creating art out of any material available under strict rationing, and bicycling the 100-km distance to see his family whenever he could. During this time, he executed several of what are now seen as his finest works out of terracotta, demonstrating his resourcefulness and commitment to his art.In 1949, plagued by ill health, Vu Cao Dam moved to the south of France with his family, to a villa named Les Heures Claires. The bright, airy atmosphere of southern France had a large impact on his painting, as did the work of his new neighbor, Marc Chagall. His works take on a sunny, pastel air at this point. Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, Vu Cao Dam gained international success, exhibiting throughout France, particularly in Nice, as well as in Sweden, Belgium, and the UK. In the early 1960s, Vu Cao Dam signed an exclusive contract with Wally Findlay Galleries in the United States. This brought his work notoriety in the United States, and there are many fine examples of his work in the United States that originate from this partnership. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opera.Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern Europe and Jewish folk culture. Framed; height: 57 1/4 in x width: 45 in.Condition: The artwork is in good condition overall. There are no rips, major creases, or restorations. No issues when inspected under UV light. The artwork is hinged along the upper edge in three spots (corners and center). It is floated in the frame. The sheet is very lightly toned and there is a very slight undulation to the sheet. There is an approx. 7 inch long crease along the lower right margin. Several handling marks throughout the margins. Some wear to the deckled edge; possibly original to the artistic process. The work is titled with pencil along the lower margin of the verso. There is some light wear to the mat. Some light wear to the frame; framed under glass.

The present work has a highly complex composition, reflecting the power and noise of the crowded village scene. Heavily influenced by Hungarian folklore, Kádár became a distinctive voice in Modernist art, exhibiting at the celebrated Der Strum Gallery in Berlin in the 1920s, alongside Oscar Kokoschka, Paul Klee and fellow Jewish artist Marc Chagall. He would also be included as part of a pioneering show at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, in 1928, selected by Man Ray and Duchamp.
