CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-French Artist. L.S., Marc Chagall, in Yiddish, to the verso of a colour postcard featuring an image of Chagall's work La vie, St. Paul, 22nd July 1967, to Henri Adam, in French. The text is in the hand of Chagall's wife, Vava, and thanks Adam for some press cuttings which he had been kind enough to send, further remarking 'I am very aware of your desire to honour my great age,, but what counts above all is the kindness and I believe in yours'. Chagall concludes by adding that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet his correspondent, which would be a great pleasure. Chagall has also dated the letter in his hand, in Yiddish, alongside his signature. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Vava Chagall. Chagall', also on behalf of her husband) in black ink to the inside, with several additional words and the date, 1969, in her hand in French, beneath a printed New Year greeting, also in French. Signed ('V. Chagall') in blue ink to the inside, with several additional words and the date, 1970, in her hand in French, beneath a printed New Year greeting, also in French. On a card bearing his printed home address “Les Collines” at Vence, to the upper right, Chagall thanks his correspondent for his letter and whishes him a prompt recovering. Accompanied by the original personal stationery envelope. VG £150-200

The letter is in the hand of Chagall´s second wife Vava. Chagall responds to his correspondent, stating `I have just received your congratulations which have deeply touched me.´, further sending his regards and thanks to him. Chagall thanks his correspondent for his sympathy and for `..your fair article published in the magazine “Jewish Culture”..´ and states `I appreciate your interests, and how much you heed on art. I see with pleasure that “Art culture” enables the artist to bring out his inner feelings.´ Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed by Chagall, signed to the verso (`Chagall´) in his hand.
