A 19thC silver gilt Pitt Club membership medallion with applied cameo portrait, marked verso for Sir W E Welby, Bart., 4.5cm high, case labelled Green & Ward. NB. The Pitt Club was founded in 1835 by Cambridge University Undergraduates and named in honour of William Pitt the Younger (28 May 1759 - 23 January 1806). Although originally a political club, there was always a social element to the club's gatherings and in latter years the social element overtook the political. Famous members have included Edward VII, George V, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt, David Frost and Eddie Redmayne
A late Victorian mahogany arched top fusee table clock, the Roman numeric and Arabic 17cm dia. chapter ring marked D and J Welby London, with chime/silent and Westminster chime on eight bells, revealing a strike on gong key wind pendulum swung action enclosed by a brass back plate flanked by quarter columns and a pierced blind fretwork, with side carrying handles, the whole surmounted by orbs, on bracket feet, 48cm high.
A late Victorian 18ct gold full hunter pocket watch, inscription to back plate, by Pearce & Sons, (glass missing), initials to reverse and crest to front cover, with inscription 'Presented to C. G. Gillows after a design by A.W.N.Pugin. A Victorian gothic revival oak desk, with nine drawers and chamfered pilasters headed by carved rosettes, the sides with linenfold panels, W. 5ft. D. 2ft 6in. H.2ft 6in.Notes: This robust library-desk, with chamferred pillars and handle-plates, romantically flowered and fretted with symbolis 'English' roses, is designed in the Victorian 'Gothic' fashion adopted in 1844 for the furnishings of Charles Barry's New Palace of Westminster by the architect and antiquary Augustus Welby Northmore ( A.W.N. ) Pugin ( d.1852 )The contracts for the supply of much of the Palace furnishings executed to Pugin's designs were gained by the London firms of Messrs. Holland and Sons and Gillows of Oxford Street; while the Birmingham firm of Messrs. Hardman and Iliffe supplied it's tinned-iron metalwork, which was fitted by the Thames Bank Workshops at Westminster. A Prime Minister's desk of this pattern is illustrated in situ in the early 20th century in P.Atterbury and C.Wainwright, eds.,Pugin: a Gothic Passion, London, 1994, p.233, fig.439.

A large impressive Edwardian silver Monteith, by Daniel & John Welby, London 1905, decorated panels of figures representing the five continents and crest, with pair of lion mask handles and detachable shaped rim, 33cm diameter, 2985g, on large ebonised stand. Condition Report: One dent to side, some surface scratching to inner bowl commensurate with use, hallmarks clear.
ORIGINAL DESIGNS FOR STAINED GLASS WINDOWS Hardman (John & Co., Birmingham and London) Nine pen and ink and watercolour drawings, some dated, the earliest 1919, the latest 1948, most 1920s/30s. Various sizes, tallest sheet 520mm, smallest dimensions 120 x 70mm. Featuring the Holy Family, angels, Biblical scenes, and Saints, including Augustine with Gregory and Ambrose above, set into an arrangement of three rectangular windows (1926). Includes a memorial window for Brownedge church to John Southworth (1592-1654),Catholic priest and martyr, alongside Margaret Ward. Other Saints represented are Dorcas and Alban. One busy single lancet window for Toronto Church (1928) exhibiting a plethora of saints and other figures (each captioned to margin), and is inscribed to base lights: 'In Honoured Memory of Augustus Stephen Vogt, Mus. Doc. Founder of the Mendelssohn Choir of Toronto And Its Conductor From 1894 to 1917… Died 1926'. Another is a design for Mark Cross Convent. Three mounted on brown card stock, the others on stiff cartridge paper, some with the Hardman studio lozenge label and reference numbers to recto or verso. Mss. captions, annotations and corrections to margins of the larger drawings (in one case doodles of some faces). Some marginal soiling and staining, the colour unfaded and enhancing the skilled draughtsmanship. An attractive set of working designs from the celebrated family firm of manufacturers of ecclesiastical furnishings; the founder John Hardman (1811-1867) was most famously associated with the pioneer Gothic architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (9).
