Augustus Northmore Welby Pugin (1812-52) ‘St Albans’ pencil on tinted paper with scratching out, signed, inscribed and dated, Aug 13th 1838, circular, 18.5cm diameter. Pugin was almost single handedly responsible for the major style of the 19th century, the Neo-Gothic. During the period between 1835 and his untimely death in 1852 Pugin wrote eight books, designed one hundred buildings including the new Houses of Parliament in conjunction with Charles Barry as well as producing interior fittings, metal work, furniture and stained glass. This drawing of the market place at St. Albans clearly shows Pugin’s mastery of draughtsmanship. It bears close comparison to Charles Marshall’s drawing of the same subject from William Edward Trotters ‘Selected Illustrated Topography of thirty miles around London’, 1839.
