NEWMAN & SINCLAIR; an Auto Kine 35mm cine camera, serial no. 363, fitted with an E Krauss Paris Tessar Zeiss 1:4.5 f-10.5cm lens, serial no. 157943, together with additional Newman & Sinclair 35mm magazine, Newman & Sinclair viewfinder, two leather carrying cases, lens bag and a copy of 'The Picture House - A Photographic Album of North West Film and Cinema'.Provenance: From the collection of Cliff Somers; a cameraman from the North West whose career is summarised in this article, taken from the British Universities Film and Video Council https://bufvc.ac.uk/newsonscreen/search/index.php/person/868The camera was used by Mr Somers across his long tenure as cameraman, one known occasion was for the boxing match between Jackie Brown and Johnny King for the British Bantamweight title, hosted at the Belle Vue in Manchester on the 31st May 1937. In the book 'The Picture House', both Gerald and Cliff Somers are pictured filming the fighters sparring, with Cliff using the same Newman & Sinclair camera for sale in this lot. Another notable highlight of Cliff Somers' career was in 1958, as part of the BBC News crew sent to Coniston Water to film Donald Campbell's fatal attempt to break the world speed record in 'Bluebird', albeit with a different camera.Condition Report: The camera is in good condition, with signs of use commensurate with age. The lens has some fungus present and the cases bear scuffs and scrapes.
