Aviation interest - a large and interesting archive of material relating to the former Royal Air Force, and later BOAC pilot, Captain John Llewelyn Mapletoft Davys (1908-1968). Captain Davys was born in Hampshire, and originally enlisted with the Royal Air Force in September 1929, after having previously served as a marine wireless operator aboard SS David Lloyd George. Davys served as a pilot for a period of 5 years with the RAF, before transferring to the reserve in 1934. In 1931, Davys was involved in a mid air collision during formation flying practice, where he collided with Flight Sergeant Albert Stanley Blake, who was piloting a Siskin from No.1 Fighter Squadron. Both pilots had to bail out by parachute, with both craft being badly damaged. The accident resulted in F/O Davys being placed in ‘open arrest’, being charged under section 30A of the Air Force Act. The letter requesting Davys’ arrest, and his typed charge sheet is included in the lot, and makes interesting reading (the damaged caused was quoted as being £3727 at the time, which is the equivalent of anything from £270,000 up to £2,341,000.00 in todays money). By 1935 he was flying with Imperial Airways, and later B.O.A.C where he piloted Flying Boats. During WW2, he played a large part in the air evacuation of Crete, and was mentioned in the 1944 Honours, when he was commended for valuable services in the air. Captain Davys is probably best known for his feats in the post war era, when in 1949 he landed his 35 ton BOAC Short Solent Flying Boat on the River Thames, near Tower Bridge, gaining him worldwide publicity at the time (Pathe newsreel can be seen on YouTube). The flying boat remained moored there for a while, awaiting its official christening by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir George Aylwen. The archive included flying log books, charting his career as a pilot, with one leather bound log charting his flying career from 1929 through to 1944. The log book notes his rank as ‘Squadron Leader’ for January 1944, but we’ve not been able to confirm this rank. Other commercial flight logs are included, plus photograph albums, his leather flying hat (named to JLM Davys), WW2 and later newspapers, and a small 1949 dated bronze plaque commemorating the christening of the Solent Flying Boat that he’d land on the River Thames, plus a gilt brass small telescope. The archive is certainly worthy of further research, and only a small selection of the ephemera in the lot is shown in the images. Condition: some normal age and service wear to the paper ephemera, but nothing to its detriment.
