19th century AD and earlier. A mixed group of chop seals comprising: a square face with broad loop to the reverse, quartered face with four characters, paper slip with stamp; a rectangular face with pierced lug handle, three large calligraphic characters; a cube with integral loop to the reverse and cord, quartered face with rectilinear characters; a disc with pierced lug and cord, labrys-shaped face with two characters; a pierced silver dome with cord, paper slip with stamp, old collector's label with handwritten inked 'Early Chinese'. 90 grams total, 11-25mm (1/2 - 1"). Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. [5, No Reserve] Fine condition.
14th century AD. A large floor tile with central rosette in white clay with circular band surrounding; red colour to the background. 415 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Property of a Kent collector; found on the Thames foreshore at Westminster, London, UK, in the 1980s; recorded with the Museum of London. The tiles were made by stamping the design into the wet clay of the tile, infilling it with a contrasting white slip, then covering the whole surface with a clear glaze. Used in various arrangements, these tiles would have made a highly decorative floor surface used only in important buildings. Fine condition.
4th-1st century BC. A terracotta figure of a youthful male standing on a square pedestal, traces of a red strip of pigment and white slip; sun burst hairstyle with traces of red pigment, horned sun disc crown to the head; the right arm hanging by the side of the body, the left holding a cockerel, a cloak covering both shoulders; hollow to the back. 775 grams, 36.5cm (14 1/2"). From a private academic Japanese collection; acquired in the 1970s. Figurines such as these were mass produced in the potteries around the city of Alexandria in Egypt and mostly depict deities. They were produced for use in domestic shrines and represent both Greek and Egyptian gods, or, as in this example, a syncretic mix of two. The features on this example would indicate that it combines aspects of Helios, the sun god, and Harpocrates, the youthful son of Isis and Osiris, who was also a deity with solar connections. Fair condition, repaired.

BOYD, ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE comprising the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, with single clasp 'North Africa 1942-43', Pacific Star, Italy Star, and War Medal 1939-45, unnamed as issued, bar mounted for wearing, with offical medal entitlement slip; together with the accompanying medal ribbon strips. Note (1): 1290787 Sergeant George Patrick Boyd, 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, the son of George and Edith Elizabeth Boyd of Sandwich, Kent, was killed in action on the 15th October 1944, aged 24 years. He is buried with honour at the Hanover War Cemetery. Sgt Boyd, a radio operator on Lancaster ME595, lost his life during a raid on Brunswick. His plane was hit by an anti-aircraft barrage and caught fire, forcing the seven man crew to bale out. Sergeant Boyd, wounded by flak, snagged his parachute as he made his way towards the exit door, causing it to partially unpack. With the plane losing height Sgt Boyd had no time to repack the parachute and, when he jumped to avoid the flames, it failed to deploy correctly and he fell to his death. Note (2): The medals of Sgt Boyd's brother constitute the following lot.

19th century English School, oil painting on canvas, Newfoundland dog rescuing young girl. 67 cm x 93 cm, framed (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This painting is in generally good condition. It has not been relined and does not appear to have had any restoration. The painting is a little dirty and does have some minor paint losses. The main loss is in the top right hand corner next to the gilt slip and the odd scuff and mark to the left hand side of the painting also next to the slip. There is a line across the bottom of the painting beneath the dogs paw in line with the top edge of the rear stretcher. The picture frame is in generally reasonable condition with minor losses to the gilding and rubbing at all corners there are several small pieces of gesso missing particularly down the left hand side of the frame. In our opinion the painting does not require relining or any significant work. The picture is not signed.
* English School (16th century), oil on panel, "Portrait of Sir John Puckering", half length, wearing robes as Keeper of The Great Seal, with armorial to top left. 89 cm x 73 cm, in ebonised frame with gilt slip and title plaque (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We do not know the name of the artist who painted the picture. But as stated the painting is 16th century and therefore we believe that the painting will have been painted at the time when Sir John Puckering was keeper of The Great Seal which I believe he was for four years between 1592-1596. As he died in 1596 it is likely that the painting dates from around this time. The painting has come to us from the Estate of Miss Mary Burkett OBE formerly of Isel Hall, Cocker mouth, Cumbria. The condition of the painting is generally good and it could be hung in its present condition without the need for any remedial work. The painting has had some restoration work which is visible under a UV lamp. The restoration work is not extensive and the main areas that have been restored are as follows:- On the face there is a small dent right at the centre of the right eye. There is also evidence of an old scratch running across the mouth area of the sitter, the indentation is just visible with the naked eye and more visible under the UV light. There are small areas of restoration below the hairline on the forehead these being 3 small patches. Also visible under a UV light is a scratch across the bridge of the nose and various small flecks and poke mark type flecks on the cheeks. There are also small areas that have been touched in all around the edge of the portrait next to the frame. The portrait is on three panels and the joins of each panel are clearly visible. The left hand panel is slightly recessed from the middle panel and there is a clear ridge here. In my opinion the painting could be hung and enjoyed in its present condition without the need for any restoration work, however the frame is a little plain and uninteresting and you may wish to replace this.
