Bob Hammons Watch, Worn During the Battle of Stavelot This is a standard U.S. military watch, with the dial present but the glass missing, as well as the strap. The back is marked with ,Ord Dept USA OC-298169., The watch comes with a set of documents sent by Bob Hammons to historian W.C. Cavanaugh. One of these documents includes a typed and signed affidavit in which Hammons explains that he wore this watch, particularly on December 18, 1944, during the assault by Peiper s troops on the town of Stavelot, where he was with his comrades. As he writes, this watch survived the freezing waters of the Ambleve River, through which they escaped after his section was hit by an 88mm shell, killing four of his comrades. Included are a significant set of correspondence from Anthony Calvanese, COA 825th TD BN US ARMY, to William C. Cavanaugh, detailing his experiences during the Battle of the Bulge, as well as a photo reprint of Doug Neuwman, KIA on December 18, 1944, a reprint of Bob Hammons in Tank Destroyer uniform, a reprint of Hammons standing in front of his armored car at Stavelot, a reprint featuring LR Armstrong, Hammons, and Hauser, and a reprint of Ables, Hammons, and Richardson. In the night of December 17, 1944, soldiers of Kampfgruppe Peiper, 1st Panzer Division ,LSSAH,, halted before the town of Stavelot. On the morning of December 18, they charged down the hill towards the American troops positioned there. This item was given to historian William C. Cavanaugh by the veteran, who was a recognized specialist in the Battle of the Bulge and whose publications are highly regarded in the field. This is an important historical memento, coming directly from the veteran and providing his story, placing the item in the context of the events. It is extremely rare to recover objects that can be directly linked to the events they were part of. The items show some wear and patina. Condition, II+.

A very rare example of the Omega De Ville designed the legendary Andrew Grima. The Crystal is in perfect condition as is the lovely silver dial. ;Both are flawless for a watch approaching 55 years old. ;Andrew Grima was awarded many honours including twelve Diamonds-International Awards. He was the first jeweller to win the Queen's Award for Export in 1966 and is the only jeweller to have won the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design. In 1970, around the same time that he was designing for Omega, he was appointed jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen .Omega commissioned him to create an avant-garde collection with great aesthetics.Andrew was given carte blanche and chose to stick to one principle: he would create the watch around the dial, regardless of its shape. ;Queen Elizabeth II owned an Andrew Grima designed OmegaThis watch is one of a number I purchased from an estate. ;The 1 previous owner lived in Singapore in the 1970's and travelled extensively during which he'd buy watches and put in a safe. ;The watch has a very unusual long rectangular design, in which the cut of the crystal matches the case shape perfectly. The integration of the bracelet is also incredibly well executed, as the case smoothly runs over into the bracelet. ;The strap is made from White Gold (filled) - see photos of hallmark - and sets off the watch brilliantly.

This watch is a museum piece!; It is that rare as most did not survive the new technology within the watch.; So happy to have this in our stock and thrilled to help it find a new home with someone who loves this kind of unique technology.; It's like the De Lorean sports car - miles ahead of its time but did not have commerical success but then became very collectable and rare.In the 1970's Bulova patented the Thermatron as a “thermoelectrically powered wristwatch.” In simple terms, this was Bulova’s attempt to create an alternative to the solar-powered watch that the Japanese Citizen watches were promoting.; They worked on the watch for nearly a decade before launching in 1982.Bulova was trying to miniaturize the established idea of the Seebeck effect, which is the basis for a thermoelectric generator. Basically, if you have a flux (mixture) of hot and cold thermoelectric materials, the temperature gradient can release electricity in a way similar to the photoelectric effect. In principle, thermoelectric generation is a cousin of photoelectric generation which is the basis of light-powered (photovoltaic) watch movements. Thermoelectric motors require a regular and constant difference of temperature between the “hot” and “cold” end. If there are issues with this element of the generator, it will not properly generate electricity. However, it did not work!; Not enough temperature differnece lead to the watch not working and too much meant the batteries coroded the watch from the inside.; Hence not many survived. This watch has been converted to work from a normal watch battery.

HERBERT, HENRY WILLIAM: COMPLETE MANUAL FOR YOUNG SPORTSMEN BY FRANK FORRESTER New York, 1856, with inscription dated 1904, 480 pages, bearing the bookplate for W.S. Curtis (Bill Curtis) (some light staining, wear to cover) The pages detail shooting and fishing in America in the 1840’s and 1850’s, with chapters on the gun, how to choose and use it, the various breeds of dogs, all types of shooting and hunting as well as chapters on sea and river fishing. The author Frank Forrester was the pseudo name for Henry William Herbert who left England at age 24 and sailed to New York City, arriving in the spring of 1831. He was from a prominent, affluent and accomplished English family. His grandfather was an Earl, his father a member of Parliament, later an esteemed clergyman, and a recognized authority in the fields of linguistics, literary composition and botany. In the spring of 1858, at age 51, Frank Forester, who could rightfully be described as the first sporting writer in America, sent a written invitation to his friends to come to his suite at the Stevens House, a fashionable New York City hotel. The invitation asked them to join him for dinner, and then to watch him shoot himself. Only one person showed up for the unusual event. After imbibing much, Forester left the dining table, went into another room, pointed a pistol at his heart, and shot himself. He staggered out, said to his guest “I told you I would do it”.
