Australia -- Medical journey -- Edinburgh University -- Sir John Fraser A journey round the world . 3 thick volumes, 4to, typescript journal of a tour round the world [the greater part dealing with Australia], January-April 1935, 206 pp. text, illustrated with 645 personal photographs, average size 9 by 13cm., original buckram bindings Note: A fascinating illustrated world tour by a distinguished Edinburgh physician. Sir John Fraser was born in Tain in 1885, went to Edinburgh University and succeeded Sir Harold Stiles as the Regius Professor of Clinical surgery in 1927. He was made K.C.V.O. in 1937, appointed surgeon to His Majesty the King in Scotland in 1935, was created a Baronet in 1943 and served briefly as Principal of the University of Edinburgh before his untimely death in 1947. In 1935 he departed London on board the Aquitania for New York, travelled overland to Los Angeles & crossed the Pacific to Honolulu, the Samoas, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. He visited numerous medical facilities and hospitals and records conversations with doctors and surgeons. In Australia he visited the new medical school of Sydney University, lunched with the Vice Chancellor, inspected the University, gave the Clubbe Lecture, visited the new Sydney Bridge & the Children`s Hospital. He visited Coff`s Harbour, and then Brisbane where he stayed with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Robertson, & gave a lecture on Appendicitis in children. At Melbourne he was received by the Melbourne Branch of the Australasian College of Surgeons, visited the Children`s Hospital, attended lectures, was entertained at Government House, visited St. Vincent`s Hospital to see Devie do a gastrecomy, visited Frankstone Hospital, visited Melbourne Hospital to watch Dr Newton operate on a case of goitre, attended medical lectures & discussions, gave a lecture on Cleft Palate &c. He also visited the races & botanical gardens, before proceeding to Adelaide, again visiting medical facilities and vineyards, Freemantle and Perth.
J.W. Benson A gentleman`s 9ct gold keyless lever half-hunter pocket watch, the signed circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial in a plain gold case, the dust cover numbered 489353, inscribed ` To dad from Maurice July 5th 1931 with attached curb-link watch chain and George V sovereign dated 1913, solder mounted as a pendant, contained in a fitted case stamped `J.W.Benson` together with original warranty dated 3 = 7 = 31.
Waltham, a 14ct gold open-faced keyless pocket watch, the white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, 24 hour `up and down` work and blued spade hands, the movement having a lever escapement with a split bimetallic balance and an overcoil hairspring, the backplate having engine-turned decoration and signed `Crescent St, Waltham, Mass. 20130781`, the case stamped on the inside `Keystone, 14K, .585 Fine, Guaranteed`, diameter: 48mm. * Aaron Dennison (1812-1895) originally set up the American Watch Company in circa 1854, being the predecessor of the Waltham Watch Company although watches continued to be signed by both concerns along with other companies under the firm`s umbrella. Dennison moved to Birmingham, England where he set up the well-known Dennison case making concern.
Thomas Russell & Son, Liverpool, an 18ct gold open-faced keyless split-chronograph pocket watch, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, inner minute dial and outer chronograph seconds dial with two hands operated from the case side, blued steel spade hands and signed `Thos Russell & Son, Liverpool`, the Swiss made movement having a lever escapement with a split bimetallic balance and overcoil hairspring, the backplate signed `Thos Russell & Son, Liverpool, 202018`, the case hallmarked for 18ct gold, Chester 1913, diameter: 52mm. * Thomas Russell, born 1797, died 1832, was a well-known chronometer maker who founded his clockmaking firm in the early Victorian period being maker`s to both the Queen and prince Albert.From 1862 until 1875, by which time the firm was known as Thos Russell & Son, they were working at 30-32 Slater Street, Liverpool before moving to 18, Church Street. They were both maker`s and retailers.

R.A as a memento of his journey with Dr. Livingstone`s remains from Unyanyembe Central Africa to Zanzibar. 1873-1874.`Together with a 9ct gold curb-link watch chain with attached United States of America one dollar dated 1852 and a gilt metal watch key.
