His mother and a number of brothers died of cholera roundabout 1841. Shortly after this he was sent home to England with a younger sister for education. After spending a number of years at Rugby school, he sat and passed the entrance exam at fifteen (1852) to get commissioned a mid-shipman in the Indian navy, returning to England after ten years when the Indian navy was disbanded in 1862. The following ten years were spent with Lloyds Salvage Association which involved reporting on shipwrecks and reorganising the marine department for the Board of Trade. He spent the rest of his career with the BOT until retiring in 1903.
