Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - SS Rajputana - a unique collection of items collected by one Doris Starmer-Smith relating to Ghandi's trip aboard SS Rajputana whilst travelling from Bombay to the second Round Table Conference in London in August of 1931. The collection comprising: 1) a unique and never-before-seen photograph of Gandhi and his travelling party taken by Starmer-Smith showing Gandhi aboard the ship, beneath a funnel, appearing to be posing for photographs. The photograph has been mounted to piece a P&OSN Co 'SS Rajputana' stationery and is autographed by Gandhi along with fifteen others from his party and the Indian delegation. Other autographs include: Devdas Gandhi (Gandhi's son), Prabhashankar Pattani (prime minister or Diwan of Bhavnagar State in Gujarat, India), Ghanshyam Das Birla (founding president of Harijan Sevak Sangh), Madeline Slade (signed as Meera Behn - one of Gandhi's most faithful followers), Madan Mohan Malaviya (president of the Indian National Congress), Kavalam Madhava Panikkar (Diplomat & Statesman), Sarojini Naidu (political activist and poet) and others unidentified. 23cm x 18cm Notable for being a left-handed autograph - Gandhi wrote with his left hand for a brief period in 1931 due to pain in his right thumb.  2) Four undocumented photographs taken by Starmer-Smith of Gandhi aboard SS Rajputana, comprising: a photograph of Gandhi speaking with one of his party on deck (12cm x 7cm), a photograph of Gandhi leaning against a guard rail (8cm x 6cm), a photograph showing Gandhi and his party - a variation of the larger photograph noted above (7cm x 9cm), and a photograph of Gandhi coming aboard - his face partially obscured by a railing (9cm x 7cm). All supplied with their original period negatives and are sold with full copyright (buyer to arrange paperwork) 3) two pages of handwritten account by Doris Starmer-Smith recounting her being onboard with Gandhi and his party. Written on P&OSN Co headed stationery. Extracts include; 'Mahatma Gandhi crossed the barrier to the second saloon passenger's deck, and the crowd there surged thick and strong. Boat stewards made a protective wall around him with outstretched arms and everybody was laughing joyously,' 'Mahatma Gandhi stood by the boat rail, quietly contemplating the crowds below. His body, thin but wiry, was naked except for a rough white loin cloth and a strip of the same homespun cloth over his shoulders. His head was closely shaven except for one small tuft of long, straggling grey hair. His nose, ears and chin, all protruding markedly, his toothless upper jaw and gapped lower teeth, his old steel rimmed spectacles cutting into his flesh behind the ears... combined to give him a most unprepossessing appearance, yet there was a quiet dignity about him - a serenity which could not be quantified'  4) a collection of other items related to Starmer-Smith and the journey on the SS Rajputana - two SS Rajputana luggage tags named to Starmer-Smith, a newspaper cutting dated February 13th 1948 with published extracts of Starmer-Smith's letter which were submitted after Gandhi's assassination just two weeks prior, the front page of the Evening Despatch newspaper with headline 'Gandhi Shot Dead' - retained by Starmer-Smith at the time, seven photographs taken on board SS Rajputana (not containing Gandhi), a ship's menu dated September 9th 1931 signed to the rear likely by fellow passengers, and sundry other ephemera from the trip.  A unique and historically important collection. Gandhi's trip aboard SS Rajputana was well documented in the press at the time, but this unique collection gives a glimpse into the events from a different perspective.  Doris Starmer-Smith was a missionary on her way back to England from a four year teaching trip in Hong Kong. She was the Great Aunt of the vendor, and the collection was inherited by descent.

[Chippendale, Thomas] Letter sent on behalf of Chippendale, Haig & Co to Sir Rowland Winn 2 Grey Fryars [sic], Newgate Street, London, 23rd December 1772, single bifolium, written on one side only (with address on verso of conjugate blank), reading 'Sir, Another bill given by you to Thomas Chippendale for £200 being in my hands I take the liberty of acquainting you that it falls due on the 4th January next, in order that you may give timely directions for its being paid on the day it becomes due, you will be kind enough to acquaint me whether I shall apply for payment for this as I did for the other bill at your bankers in Pall Mall. I have the honour to be, Sir, your most humble serv[an]t, for H. J. Fergusson [sic], Jno Fergusson'Note: Note: Henry Ferguson, executor of Chippendale's first partner James Rannie (d.1766), entered into partnership with Chippendale in 1771 in a deal in which he and bookkeeper David Haig each acquired a third share in the troubled firm, thereafter known as Chippendale, Haig & Co. Sir Rowland Winn, of Nostell Priory, near Pontefract, Yorkshire, was one of Chippendale's most important patrons: 'The furniture made for Nostell Priory and for Sir Rowland Winn's London house is impressively documented by letters, bills, estimates, memoranda, receipts, and drawings which serve to illustrate how the firm programmed a major commission. Whether there was a special connection between Chippendale and his client on account of their being fellow Yorkshiremen is not proven. The tenor of their correspondence is, on the one hand, that of an impatient and frustrated client, railing against Chippendale's dilatoriness, often threatening to withdraw his custom with dire consequences to his reputation. Chippendale, on the other hand, seemed almost permanently desperate for payment and yet always remained obsequious' (ODNB).

Artes suntuarias del siglo XVIII del Museo de Historia" (The Exquisite. Sumptuary Arts of the 18th Century in the Museum of History): "In 1778, Antonio Martínez created a Silverware School-Workshop in Madrid, with models and machinery purchased in Paris and London during his study trip which was funded by royal patronage. After working from several locations, he finally settled on the neoclassical building on Paseo del Prado, opposite the Botanical Garden, and abandoned hand-crafted production for industrial production, which would allow them to lower the prices of their products, and therefore make them more affordable to the new bourgeoisie. The School acquired the title of Royal Factory and Fernando VII maintained activity there after the death of Martínez in 1798. The Factory stopped producing in 1869 and the building was demolished in 1920."

Lot 79

ÉTIENNE MOREAU-NELATON , PARIS, 1859 - PARIS, 1927 L'Omnibus Oil on canvas 62.9 x 80 cm From the top of her promontory, this elegant woman facing us adopts a perfectly symmetrical pose, with her outstretched arms resting on her horizontally placed umbrella. Seated on the bench of the upper platform of an omnibus 'à l'impériale', she occupies, static, the centre of the canvas. She is surrounded by two men, seated on the other side of the bench, offering the light touch of her jacket between their two black clothes. These gentlemen turn to converse with the lady. Relegated to the left, two other men, one in a light jacket, the other in a dark suit, also occupy the same bench. These silhouettes, with their various hats, stand out against the rosy glow of the sky in the background. The alternating shades of their clothes blend into the urban landscape, at the level of the houses on either side of the composition that form the two sides of the street. The tight framing of the scene, which reveals the influence of photography, gives a certain intimacy to this conversation, whose location on the upper platform of a bus is understood thanks to a few clues. The clear pattern of the guardrail bends to the right, suggesting the bus's staircase; a sign mentions 'Ternes', revealing its destination, while underneath, the inscriptions 'St Honoré - 33' inform us of the line it takes. However, the point of view chosen by the painter places us at the same height as the characters, as if we were on the platform of another omnibus. This painting, through its framing, photographic, its palette, restricted, and its subject, contemporary, is imbued with the avant-garde pictorial research carried out by the painters Degas or Manet, whom Moreau-Nélaton also collects.Etienne Moreau-Nélaton (1859-1927) was a French artist - painter, engraver and ceramist - but also an art historian and, finally, an immense art collector who bequeathed some one hundred paintings to the Louvre; he is thus one of the largest private donors to the French state. In the course of three donations, forty paintings by Corot were acquired by the Louvre, as well as many avant-garde works such as Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Edouard Manet and Les Coquelicots by Claude Monet, now in the Musée d'Orsay. Finally, he was the author of the most important monographs of his time, devoted to Delacroix, Corot, Manet and Millet. Son of the painter and ceramist Camille Moreau-Nélaton, Etienne owes his vocation as an artist to her. He began by training with the landscape artist Henri Harpignies and then with the painter and decorator Albert Maignan. This Omnibus is one of the rare works that have come down to us and offers an enlightening testimony to Moreau-Nélaton's passion for this realist painting that he loved so much that he bequeathed it to the Louvre Museum. One thinks of Manet's Balcony, where the figures stand behind the openwork railing of a balcony, or the urban subjects of Degas or Caillebotte, whose elaborate angles of view seek to capture the modernity of his time. Provenance: Sotheby's sale, New York, 24 May 1995, lot 00256. Signatur: Signed lower left

Lot 16

PAUL CÉZANNE , AIX-EN-PROVENCE, 1839 - AIX-EN-PROVENCE, 1906The Two ChildrenOil on canvas 55 x 45 cmTwo children seated outside a house are petting a rabbit. The second one, huddled next to them, seems to be waiting for his turn. The scene takes place at the foot of the stoop of a house, in a shady courtyard where there is a barrel and probably the hutch, behind the children. The children, a brother and sister with similar features, belong to a wealthy family, judging by their attire. The perceptible details of the architecture behind them suggest a middle-class house with a wrought-iron railing and an arbour supporting a Virginia creeper. A patch of blue sky in the upper right reveals a sunny day bringing light into the courtyard. While the brown palette suggests half-light, the children, with their bright, clear colours, are lit from the front, in contradiction with the light source behind them. The painter's intention here is not so much to respect the rules of a realistic representation as to draw us portraits of two children, probably from his family, fixed in a moment of intimacy. Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a major painter of the 19th century, whose controversial work was a turning point in the history of Western painting. Initially destined for a career in law, he decided at the age of 23 to become a painter and moved from Aix-en-Provence to Paris, where he was rejected by the Ecole des Beaux-arts. He frequented the artists Pissarro, Renoir and Monet, with whom he inaugurated the first Impressionist exhibition in 1872, presenting three paintings that were poorly received by the public. Admired by his peers, but maligned by the critics, Cézanne, disappointed, broke away from the Impressionist group to return to his native Provence and continue his formal research in a style that would remain his own. Working on 'the motif', he was interested in the geometry of volumes and the colour relationships in his still lifes and landscapes. His series of views of Mont Sainte-Victoire remains his most famous work. These Two Children date from Cézanne's very first steps in painting, when he was taking his first courses at the Aix-en-Provence School of Drawing. Although the style is still naïve, one can already sense a keen sense of observation. His attempt at chiaroscuro betrays an admiration for the Caravaggio style of religious painting in the churches of his native town. Throughout his life, Cézanne, the self-taught artist, would draw his painting from observation of the great masters, in particular by assiduously frequenting the Louvre, 'this book in which we learn to read'.Work reproduced in the Catalogue raisonné of the painting of Paul Cézanne, John Rewald, 1996, published by Harry N. Abrams and the Wildenstein Committee.Certificate: René Millet Expert appraisal

F. W. Prentice. R.E.); British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. F. W. Prentice.) nearly extremely fine (4) £8,000-£10,000 --- M.C. London Gazette 15 October 1918: ‘For great initiative and gallantry during an attack. After the infantry were established on the final objective he patrolled his tank in front, destroying hostile machine-gun groups, smashing one gun and capturing another. He then directed his tank through the protective barrage to subdue guns on the far side. On one occasion he got out of his tank, followed by a gunner, and captured several of the enemy, pulling one out of a trench by his gas mask.’ The original Recommendation, for an Immediate Award, adds further details: ‘On July 4, 1918, during the attack on Hamel and Vaire Wood, near Corbie, this officer showed the very greatest initiative and gallantry. After seeing the infantry established on the final objective, he patrolled up and down in his tank in front of them, destroying hostile machine-gun groups: smashing one gun and capturing another which had been firing at our infantry. As hostile machine-guns were still firing from beyond our artillery protective barrage, this officer directed his tank through our barrage in order to subdue the machine-guns which were harassing our infantry. On one occasion Second Lieutenant Prentice got out of his tank, followed by a gunner, and captured several enemy out of a trench, pulling one out by his gas mask. During the action this officer showed a total disregard of personal safety. He only withdrew from the battle on account of mechanical trouble caused by a bullet from an anti-tank rifle. By his fine personal example he gave his crew the utmost confidence throughout the action.’ Frank Winnold Prentice was born at Downham Market, Norfolk, on 17 February 1889 and prior to the Great War was employed as a Storekeeper by the White Star Line. He joined the crew of the Titanic in April 1912, having previously served in the Celtic, for the monthly wage of £3 15s, and served in her on her maiden voyage from Southampton. On the night of 14-15 April 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank with the loss of over 1,500 souls. Prentice was amongst the survivors - in his own account of the disaster he recalls how he and fellow storekeepers Michael Kieran and Cyril Ricks jumped from the stern in the final moments of the sinking, jumping off well over 100 feet above the water almost over the warning notice ‘Warning: This vessel is triple screwed, keep clear of the blades’ board which was mounted on the poop deck railing. Ricks broke his leg during their abandonment of the ship, but Prentice found him in the water and stayed with him until he died. Finding some wreckage to cling to, he eventually managed to swim to Lifeboat 4, and was pulled aboard. Before abandoning the ship, Prentice recalls that he took a bottle of brandy with him; still clinging to it as he was picked up by a lifeboat the bottle caught the eye of the officer in charge of the lifeboat, who promptly took it from him (before Prentice had drunk any of it) and threw it overboard. Eventually picked up by the Carpathia, Prentice disembarked at New York City on 18 April 1912. (The recipient’s own account, as told in the documentary Titanic: A Question of Murder, refers). Prentice returned to England and signed on to the Oceanic on 10 July 1912. He later recalled that he was on board when one of Titanic's lifeboats was found drifting in mid-Atlantic with four dead aboard. Following the outbreak of the Great War the Oceanic was converted into an armoured cruised and sailed from Southampton on 25 August 1914. Her naval service was to last just two weeks, for on the morning of 8 September 1914 she ran aground on the notorious Shaalds of Foula reef off Shetland. Once again Prentice had to jump into the water and again he was picked up by a lifeboat. Deciding that he had more than pushed his luck with ships and the sea, he decided at that point to join the Army. Prentice attested for the Royal Engineers, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 January 1915. He was commissioned temporary Second Lieutenant in the Tank Corps on 28 August 1917, and was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry during the attack on Hamel and Vaire Wood on 4 July 1918. Advanced Major, in later life Prentice reflected, ‘I’ve had a lot of experiences during my life Two World Wars. Badly shattered right arm. Another wound in the leg. And all anyone wants to know about is the Titanic. (Ghosts of the Titanic, by Charles Pellegrino refers). He died in Bournemouth, Dorset, on 30 May 1982. Sold with copied research, including two VHS video cassettes containing the recipient’s recollections; a copy of Ghosts of the Titanic, by Charles Pellegrino, in which the recipient is mentioned and quoted; and a Royal Life Saving Society Swimming Proficiency Medal, bronze, the reverse named ‘A. P. Prentice, July 1938.’
