Very fine condition.UK art market, acquired prior to 2000.The Mahabodhi Temple complex in Bodhgaya is one of the holiest sites related to the life of the Buddha as it is the place where he attained enlightenment. The present temple dates from the 7th Century AD with later additions, and was built on the site of a previous temple erected by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. The temple consists of a central sanctuary with a tall pyramidal tower and houses a large gilded image of the Buddha. The temple is built in front of the Bodhi Tree, the tree under which the Buddha obtained enlightenment, which is surrounded by a quadrangular stone railing that dates to the 2nd century BC. The railing was extended in later periods and the posts are either made of sandstone or coarse granite and are decorated with carved medallions with naturalistic and mythical animals, lotus designs and scenes from the life of Buddha. This enclosed area marked the sacred space for pilgrims to undertake circumambulation of the tree.

Arte Islamica. A large papier mache lacquer board depicting a royal gathering in the Safavid style Iran, 19th century. Big painting depicting a court celebration, characterized by the Shah in the top right, framed by a building depicted in multiple perspective, and surrounded by attendants bearing food, and figures feasting in the lower level. In the background is an idyllic landscape, separated from the scene mentioned above by a red railing, which, together with the characteristics of the figure and the taj (headwear with central stick), identifies the painting as belonging to the Safavid tradition. Some of the faces were erased, many stereotyped and some resemble proper portraits. Illuminated with interwoven palmettes and half-palmettes on the margins. Paintings similar to this were sold by Christie’s in 2012 (sale 6853, lot 41). . Cm 48,80 x 72,00 x 0,90.
Arte Indiana. Portrait of Jahangir Southern India, Southern Sultanate, possibly Bijaipur, 17th century Natural pigment and gold on paper. Fine portrait of imperial style, ascribable to the tradition of the Southern sultanates, depicting the emperor Jahangir sitting on the throne in conversation with two nobles. At his back is an attendant with a fly-whisk. The bright sky characterizes most of the background, with the exception of two green trees behind a white railing separating nature from the rich architecture, depicted as is often the case with the use of multiple perspective. The richness of the miniature is suggested by the abundance of details, by the excellent making and the copiousness of gold. The painting was attributed to the southern sultanates also in consideration of the fact that the facial features of the emperor differ slightly from the one typical of the courts of Agra and Delhi. A writing in Persian at the base of the throne identifies him as Jahangir. Beautiful illumination with swirling golden arabesques on a blue background on the margins. For reference, a similar item is the album page sold by Christie’s in October 2015 (sale 10386 lot 164). . Cm 15,00 x 23,00.
