Lot 600

Attest Marchand, signiert A. Diena und G. Bolaffi. SBK 1W = CHF 220.000. Provenienz: Mirabaud, Ferrari und Burrus. "Zürich 4", background of horizontal lines, types I & II, an extraordinary pair featuring original, slightly cracked, gum, of remarkable freshness enabling its background to be quite clearly exhibited, showing good to predominantly large margins. A faint vertical crease between adhesives, and consequently not affecting the designs, is of no significance for this, one of the finest of only six unused pairs known, this being undoubtedly one of the finest and possessing the added significance of still preserving its original gum (an outstanding feature for this stamp); two of the six pairs known exhibit types I & II. (Sold for CHF 70'000 in 1964, Burrus auction held by Robson Lowe and Urs Peter Kaufmann in Basel, illustrated in one of the few colour plates dedicated to the most significant items of the collection; offered for the last time at public auction on that occasion). A great rarity of Swiss philately, and certainly a key item in the highly advanced collection. Cert. Marchand, signed A. Diena and G. Bolaffi. SBK 1W = CHF 220'000. Provenance: Mirabaud, Ferrari und Burrus.

Lot 626

Attest Marchand, signiert A. Diena und G. Bolaffi. SBK 16/II. Provenienz: Hind und Burrus. Rayon II without framed cross, the exceptional block of twelve, unused with original gum, types 13-14-15-16 / 21-22-23-24 / 29-31-31-32, B1 stone, of delightful freshness with very large margins on all four sides, mostly displaying the frame lines between neighbouring adhesives. The great desirability of this item is further enhanced by the absence of imperfections (a tiny tear in margin of type 15 is of no importance), this being a most remarkable feature for this large multiple. The largest multiple recorded of the rare B1 stone of this extensively used stamp. (Sold for CHF 52'000 and presented as one of the most celebrated items of the Burrus collection in 1964; few years later this item was offered in an auction in London and now, circa 35 years later, this sale offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire this gem). A great gem of Swiss philately, representing a quintessential combination of beauty and rarity. Cert. Marchand, signed A. Diena and G. Bolaffi. SBK 16/II. Provenance: Hind und Burrus.

Lot 644

Attest Marchand, signiert G. und A. Bolaffi. SBK 35 (CHF 5.000 einzeln postfrisch). De Raay, Leon The History of the Postage Stamps of the Orange Free State and Orange River Colony. Part I (edition of 100 copies; 1907) 190 x 135 From the library of the late Andre Bezuidenhout, a leading collector and authority of the philately and postal history of the Anglo-Boer War and the Orange Free State. One of his philatelic coups was tracking down the whereabouts of the complete 17-volume stamp collection of Leon de Raay (author of this title and the title in Lot 308), purchasing it and bringing it from the Netherlands to South Africa. This title was described by A E Geldhof in his 1938 work as one of the two outstanding books without reference to which his own monograph could not have been written. All the printed works of De Raay (sometimes Raaij), the leading authority of the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century on the stamps of South Africa, are collectors` items. Published 106 years ago, this is an outstandingly well-preserved copy. The mushroom cloth-boards, gilt to the spine, are lighly bumped at the corners and spine. The binding has been strengthened and new plain endpapers inserted. Some of the 388 pp of illustrated text, photographs, maps and plates are foxed. There are no owner signatures and the copy is unmarked except for `34` in pen (the number of this copy from the edition of 100 copies).
