Papua. 1938 Declaration of British Possession stamp-sized reproductions of unadopted designs for the 3d, the third being quite close to the issued design. On glossy paper, marked J1-3 in ink on the front, with sellotape strips on the reverse and dated 10/12/38. This is three months after the issue date for the stamps, suggesting the possibility that these were "used in the developmental stages for the 1939 Airs." (Prestige Philately October 2012 sale). Ex E.C. Harris archive (see London Philatelist article by Gary Watson, Dec. 2014)

1859, Feb. 10. Entire letter from Chañarcillo to Pabellón, bearing "Estancos" 10c. covering the single rate with diagonal half as 5c. with complete to very large margins, tied by bold strike of the mute square cancel featuring vertical and horizontal crossed lines. The origin of this grid postmark is unknown, which is absolutely exceptional as the only mute cancel recorded, originating from a Chilean locality and not exhibiting the concentric rings, used on the imperforate classic issues. It can not be confirmed with full confidence that it originated from Chañarcillo, since it might be also applied on arrival at Pabellón (the two covers known with this postmark, both sent in February 1859, are addressed to this locality and come from Chañarcillo). One of the two items known exhibiting this grid cancel. One of the most fascinating and rarest usages of Chilean classic philately. Ex Menéndez.
1920, July 20. Cover, opened for diplay, from Cartagena to Barranquilla, franked on reverse with 10c. green tied by "CCNA/Cartagena" oval handstamp, paying the national postage with 3c. tied by "Correo Aéreo./Cartagena-Colombia." c.d.s., and "Recibo" large c.d.s. of Barraqnuilla on arrival. Some creases or wrinkles not detracting. The 20 July 1920 flight was to be completed by the Captain Fratoni from Cartagena to Barranquilla. Nevertheless, the plane crashed at Boca Grande near Cartagena, killing the pilot and the passenger Arturo Gerlein, and seriously injuring Alfredo Araujo. The mail recovered from this crash was sent by ordinary mail to destination. The importance of this item goes far beyond its rarity for exhibiting this exceedingly scarce vignette on cover, as this is one of only two covers which have survived from this plane crash, both being the only representation of crash mail in the early airmail issues of Colombian philately. Of great desirability and historic importance. Scott C11. Ex Jack C. Boonshaft.
